I'm beginning to lose control of my data

I'm beginning to lose control of my data.

Help me, Sup Forums. How do I organize 15 years worth of recursively dumping everything on the root drive to "spring cleaning" until the drive becomes full and starting fresh on a new drive?

delete things you haven't touched in forever, not that hard
and no you won't need it in the future or else you would have touched it by now

Just make a list of important things and where they are, backup and organize them
Delete the rest or leave it disorganized if you can afford it

hoard all of your data but organize it
get some big drives and start organizing it by category, date, whatever you want

I would recommend getting internal hard drives and setting up a nas using raid or lvm or zfs so you can have a big remote storage pool, then you can use those USB drives as backup drives and keep then shelved when not in use.

First of all, locate your oldest drive and post your most ancient memes here.

Build a FreeNAS box or some other ZFS appliance.

If you havent looked at it in 15 years, delete it.
My dad insists on backing his shit up like that and every fucking time he never even loads the drive again.

Not OP but what do I need for a budget NAS?

this please

Bump for memes

An old computer with 1-3 gigs of ram and perferrably a 2 core processor and a direct line to your router/switch. Oh and a alot of drives.

Thats why I invested in a NAS. If you were wise you would take a weekend and build one and organize your data for the sake of it and the future.

What if the number of sata ports is low?

Like 2 or 4?

Yeah
I guess using externals with usb 1 is ok for NAS?

*usb 2.0

I would still fill the SATA ports before investing in a root hub for usb2.0 as it is quite slow.

This

It's easy, format them. Nothing is worth keeping for years. Delete, start new, and continue on.

fucking same issue op

you have to set aside a weekend to sort it out

ive forced myself to have multiple sub categories with sub categories

this requires obsessive sorting which im not accustomed to and its literally OCD but it helps with directory load time I/O and interacting with files

even my download folder now has categories for work/hobby/xxx/info/ect

a example for info would be diagrams/schematics/infographs/static_sites/manuals

then inside manuals would be pdf/html/plain and inside html is radios/computers/phones/routers/embedded/engines

and within those brands and specific models

its almost never ending once you get started.
i also feel like it works a part of my brain that ive never used before because im not OCD and generally messy with my tools and parts

The quality of posts is extremely important to this community. Use proper puntualization, capitalization, and don't begin every sentence with a new line. Apply yourself.

When you find out let me know. I did the exact same thing for the same amount of time.

My current solution is to but EVERYTHING into a folder called "old" and pretend nothing happened.

Not him but I actually have hoards of 2008 Sup Forums saved somewhere.
I also have several gigabyes of ripped threads (all posts, thumbnails, and original image files, + extra bullshit files) from the last 8 years.
Its like a time vault, although most of it is porn and wallpapers.
alot of the older stuff is missing though because I started feeling like shit for hoarding it all and wasting space and deleted stuff blindly.

You can get a 4 port usb 3.0 card for $20 or cheaper all day long.

>2008
>ancient

Fuck off newfag.

Did he ever get down from those speakers?

I started archiving in 2008.
you are literally cancer, lrn2read.

>newfags still get butthurt about being called newfags all these years later.

2008 isnt ancient. Deal with it sweetie. Xx

You're like they guy that cant accept that 90s cars are now "classics" and can get classic/antique plates in (at least some) states.

it's only 10tb of data.

you need a box.

yeah OP, if you cram it all together in one pool it will be easier to organize instead of multiple separate drives

purge everything except valuable family media and documents
sell all drives, get something nice instead

This is a real hoarding problem.
When your possessions become a burden, it is time to let go.

This is my next project OP. Going to get 2 8TB drives (one for the shit, and a backup) and start dumping my 60 - 500gb drives and attempting some kind of structure.

I know I can kill the movie folders because nothing is rare and they are like x480 resolution, can probably kill the edonkey and lime wire folders too but I kinda like files named "milf has sex with young man sexy sex xxx adult porn sex fucking amateur cunt pokemon 1 (1) (1).jpeg"

What the fuck are you on about newfag?

Somebody has to save the 3DO's from Gamestops retro game initiative.

uderrated post

buy a sata controller

I've done this, but with 3x5TB 2,5" Seagates.

2x5TB for my important data + backup

1x5TB for non-important data (movies, tv, steam, games), no backup

I store a list of the content on the latter drive on the first two in case it dies, so I can redownload it if needed.
