Sup Forumstards will tell you Libre is better.

It's not.

Yes

To be honest, new versions of Office have become shit and some people do like Libre for this

Latex, but don't know where to start.

Wordperfect 11

vim and latex

Don't suggest LaTeX as a word processor, suggest LyX and let OP use an easy interface

i'd be glad if it just stopped crashing. seriously i souldnt be able to reproduce the same crash with data loss by pressing a button combination. not on a expensive top shelf product like this.

Yes. Anything

No, Libre is a meme.
Office is one of the reason I still use Windows on my main PC, no one can't beat it.

>latex
>word processor

lol

this guide pretty good for install lukesmith.xyz/latex

notepad++

Is Abiword any good?

Thanks user, how much does it take to do the usual stuff you'd do with Word without checking cheatsheets?

currently working on my own text editor.
You bet your ass it will be better

Yes, I use it when I absolutely must deal with word documents.

No.

The best is separation of content from styling using LaTeX, Markdown, ReStructuredText, or Asciidoc, and a plaintext editor. The most valuable parts of Office are actually Visio, Excel, and Access because they help normies do baby programming.

I dunno started not long ago myself. Anything particular you have in mind when you say usual stuff?

I prefer libreoffice personally. After office 2003 it really went downhill.

Excell is still great though

i am as open source commie as they come but MS word is indisputably better than any open source alternative. i use libreoffice at home but at school when i load of MS word i instantly remember and appreciate that smooth, intuitive interface.

MS office is one of the only things windows still does well. as they should. if you're going to pay for your software, it should be the best fucking product out there. there's no excuse to charge for something that is "just as good" as open source

LaTeX

>i am as open source commie
cuck detected

Paging a document with footer & page number, header, titles, inserting some images, the usual text formatting, tables, lists, create an index...

Libre Office is much better. Proprietary software is for corporate drones like you.

if you spend time on it everyday I would say 1-2 weeks would surely get you going good. If you are kinda just doing stuff once in a while like me it could easily take longer then that though. It's easy to find a lot of documentation online though, and if you got the full package as in the tutorial I showed you enabling most of the things should be as simple as putting a \usepackage{whatever} on top your document and following some simple instructions on how to use it. No idea about the page stuff but it took me a minute to find this fx essex.ac.uk/linguistics/external/clmt/latex4ling/General/headers/

LaTeX and Vim feels so right.

libre is worse, but its also botnet free

>Cancer
>Aids
>Being stabbed to death after forceful anal rape
Quite a few things actually...

I wrote this guide for a some ele students
I find kile to be a much better alternative to lyx

From someone who actually uses all of the features of word every day - there is nothing that compares. It's intuitive, fast, and it's miles ahead of the competition.

>Libreoffice - too slow, too difficult to move objects freely on the page
>Any browser-based alternative - not enough features, no columns
>Abiword - doesn't format text neatly, heading/subheading features don't work properly, no zoom shortcuts
>openoffice - hideous defaults for everything, no shape drawings
>WPS office writer - not bad, infested with ads and other "features"
>SoftMaker FreeOffice - not enough features.

Please, freeguys, free me from 30 years of microsoft bondage.

Page number is made automatically, headers and footers can be globally set at the start of a project. Titles are one simple command. Contents/indices are automatically created and just need to be included with one command and section numbering is automatically sorted out by the compositor

Libre is free, and more than gets the job done.

Microsoft word is a fucking paid botnet joke that constantly wants a subscription.

That document is so cancerous.
Never use Comic Sans ffs!

It's actually aimed at small children. Font size 14, comic sans is industry standard.

here's your (You)

libre office, end of the fucking question.
only an actual office drone that cannot differentatiate between a monitor and a computer would say otherwise.

When you ask them why it usually boils down to "look on my computer this button is here, while on this program it's not here".
But what to expect from a monkey that depends on office software really.

A&E dept I work at switched to libreoffice long time ago and literally noone ever complained about it. It does what its supposed to do. On top of that - it costs nothing

Adobe Photoshop

Office 2007 and maybe 2011 are the best editions. Everything after is botnet always connected garbage.

Can't you pirate MS Office?

nano

Give WPS Office a go, I've been using it for the past 2 months, it has a lot of the features that are available in Word. It can save as a word document and it can open word documents.

wps.com/

Yes, but I dream of being a freetard. This is the only thing that keeps me here in windows hell.

>Ads
>Phone home
>another integrated cloud service

No thanks.

Alternatives?

>if my software iznt free then dey iz taken muh freedumz

You really fell for the meme

i use libreoffice at home but MS office at work and i find that MS office just feels smoother. libreoffice definitely gets the job done and i would never personally pay for it but it definitely has that "open source unpolished" feel about it

>eating shit is great as long as it comes from an aryan bum

It's not a meme. Closed source software is trash for anyone who enjoys using computers as a hobby.

GNU Emacs

I want to create a simple database in windows. I have to spend 109 dollars for access in addition to already paying for office 2016 or 365. Yah fuck that. I made it in Libre Office Base. Updates are free, the next version is free, and it takes SQL commands. Is Ms Office so much better that its worth paying for a botnet? Paying for a botnet, I'll use Libre Office on principal alone.

LibreOffice Writer
There is nothing in MSWORD 2016 that I would use that isn't already in LOWORD.

>buh buh buh docx
Docx is supported and it is Microsoft's fault that there are any compatibility issues. If you have to use docx, use the open strict version.

>using a shitty open source version of already shitty microsoft SQL
>not just downloading pgadmin III and making it in postgreSQL

DB-lets, when will they learn

LibreOffice Writer is def in the "good enough" category for me. I've done some complex stuff in it and it was all pretty easy after a quick search.
MS Office actually became worse with 2013 or 2016. It now takes longer to start, for example, and has some integrated cloud shit that can't be removed.

I'm sure Word is better in some ways, but it's not enough for me to install that borderline malware on my main OS. I just keep it in a VM for emergencies.

Google Docs

>mfw people have actually decided to bypass the step where the botnet has to scan your harddrive to upload it to the server and upload it voluntarily

we are doomed

Something isn't a meme just because you claim so. Claiming something is trash doesn't make it so.
You truly are one brainwashed motherfucker huh.

>mfw not everyone believes the same thing I do

Cry about it more.

>Google Docs
>let Google scan all your documents for keywords so they can have a disturbingly accurate profile of your interests for advertising and so the NSA can keep you on record
No thanks.

>lalalala it's not true lalala

Poo in the loo pajeet

>Latex, but don't know where to start.

Get proTeXt.

tug.org/protext/
texstudio.sourceforge.net/

The download is huge (2.5 GB) but worth it. It comes with TeXstudio. It's awesome and much better than the other editors I've tried. Just turn off the retarded word repetition warning and you are golden.

These guys get it.

If you want document preparation on free software or are doing STEM documents that would look like complete shit with Word Processing, then using LaTeX and friends.
If you need to collaborating with people and are unconcerned about da botnet, use Google Docs.
Otherwise, use MS Office.

Find any errors in this logic.

>Is Abiword any good?

I think it could find a niche as lightweight text editor in between text editors and a full Office suite product, like a less retarded WordPad.

Too bad it's dead.

Markdown

>SQL Server
>Shitty
Microsoft hate is often well placed, but come on now.

Last I checked, Access doesn't even have reasonable syntax for a count distinct. Fuck Access, piece of shit. I don't understand why anybody would ever use it.

Thanks anons!

FocusWriter

This is the correct answer. In any case, use Word or latex if you want something that just werks(tm). LibreOffice still has a lot of catchup to do.

libreoffice works fine for me 2bh

im not missing anything

They've become better, actually

>he doesn't use GSuite and expects a free lunch
kek

org-mode for GNU emacs

Office is fucking genious on phones and tablets and also free

Christians 1
Atheists 0

I disagree. Every time I get near Office I puke a little.

A physical notebook and a pack of colored pencils is better. Micropenis Office is for cucks.

I'd love to see your resume

Even though I disagree 100%, this was hilarious. Thank you.

Textmaker (from Freeoffice) is compatible w/DOCX shit format, is freeware and use low system resources

I'm currently using Libre, but I kinda hate it.

So... let's say I fall for this office meme. The last decent-looking professional plus office was 2010 ($25)... 2013 ($30) looks awful, and 2016 ($45) looks borderline decent. Should I buy them, and update and embrace the bot? or ignore all updates? ignore specified updates? Or should I just download a full cracked version and forget about updates?

>monday morning
>M$ shill threads pop up
>like niggers
>when someone drops a penny
fucking disgusting

TOo lazy to learn latex. Is there a vi keybinding plugin for word? Really tired of the alt "shortcuts"

Not denying that product shills do seem to come here... but that doesn't mean it's an invalid topic.

> Or should I just download a full cracked version and forget about updates?
There are no crack for the last retail edition, as far as I know. There are KMS activators, though. Updates can be downloaded as usual.

I have no clue how kmspico worked / works. I had it with MS Office 2010 before I switched to Libre, but I never installed an update. How does this activator allow updates? Is it safe?

Answering myself, I searched and now I get how it works... nevertheless, are there any drawbacks to KMS activators -besides- being "illegal"?

>Libreoffice - too slow, too difficult to move objects freely on the page
I'll agree with your other points but Office is notorious for being difficult when moving stuff around.
The default wrapping mode for images in old version didn't even let you freely move them on the page.
When I started using LibreOffice the main thing I noticed that was better than word was that moving stuff about was a lot easier.

Wordstar!

BDSM is not for everyone.

Pages are legit better than word.
Troff and latex are pretty good too.

Libreoffice would be better if microsoft properly opened their formats. They designed .docx and others to only work with office and they didn't properly release it like they were supposed to.
