So my family's shitbox has just died and there are about 25~ years of family pictures, videos, files that needs to be recovered for them.
The HDD is a 500gb Seagate Barracuda 7200.11. It starts up like it should but neither of my PC's (nor the BIOS) will recognize it.
I've done some research and looks like it needs a firmware update, but I have no idea how it's done or if it's really gonna fix it. I was thinking to replace the PCB from Ebay, but would it fix my problem?

head over to /sqt/ buddy

It's fucked. Never trust seagate.

Inb4 use your backups

You could usefully try brushing out the contacts on that bad boy, you could also try sealing it in a plastic bag then freezing for 30mins. If still no you can try leaving board side up in the sun another 30 assuming CA or AZ levels of heat.

I personally wouldn't try swapping boards unless you are already experienced with that as they are VERY fussy. Rather, spend the money sending it off to a professional shop who can do it much more carefully.

Remember that much of that shit is also available through fb, through ad cards from cameras, through email attachments they've sent just waiting for the magic password

And remember to use their backups too

The answer is always to restore from backups.

Thanks user! I'll look into that and I'll make them backing up their shit from now on

Just pay for restoring some company

They'll never do it. You'll never do it too. Kill yourself.

Try booting a Linux live USB and accessing it from that first if you haven't already.

Is it actually dead? If not do what user above me said and boot into Linux and move the files onto another drive.

If it's the HDD that's dead your only option is to pay out the ass to a specialized company.

Tell the truth - it's your porn collection

Shit advice, don't do this

If it's making weird noises the head might be stuck. You can take it apart and try to free it if that's the case. Try multiple SATA ports. It could have been hit by magnetism, in which case it's royally fucked.

Thanks anons! I'll check it out

Send it to a specialised data recovery firm. The chance of success is poor and they will charge an obscene amount of money either way. There is no other chance to recover the data. Be aware that home "remedies" like putting it in the fucking freezer are likely to do nothing but damage it further.

You should have backups.
If you don't, send it to a restoration team.
Fixing HDDs isn't for amateurs.

Use photorec dude
Thank me later

>putting in the freezer
people really do this? normies are retards

>seagate

enjoy your paperweight

>seagate
you said the magic word OP. Enjoy your recovery failure.

Nice meme, fag. My server is loaded with used seagates in a raid 0. Been perfectly fine for years.

>would it fix my problem?
Does the drive spin at all? You should be able to hear\feel the platters spin when you try and tilt it as its on. If not, replacing the PCB won't help. You would need to transplant the platters into a drive with a working motor.

gotta use DBAN to wipe the Hard drives Cache.
If the computer just dies you can freeze up the NAND thats used for cache and you have to 0 it out before its usable
