If you would like to try out GNU/Linux you can do one of the following: 0) Install a GNU/Linux distribution of your choice in a Virtual Machine. 1) Use a live image and to boot directly into the GNU/Linux distribution without installing anything. 2) Dual boot the GNU/Linux distribution of your choice along with Windows or macOS. 3) Go balls deep and replace everything with GNU/Linux.

Also what's this "archive mount" thingy in linux mint that can mount isos, mdfs and shit? (package name plz)
Eli Moore
Just installed Linux for the first time and I have some questions. Why the mouse speed is so high and it feels weird sometimes. How do I increase the scroll speed in firefox.
Jayden Barnes
Dont use mint,simple solution
Cooper Lee
>why are all these personal preference settings, set at things im uncomfortable at using Go in and change them. >how archwiki
that's not linux though? it's xorg settings isn't it? mount -o loop thing.iso /mnt/mountpoint
Jack Green
because AUR is open to users, not only to official archlinux maintainers. I have myself added my own software to AUR. Really cool. ubuntu ppa are also cool.

>be windows user >try to install manjaro >fails to install twice and just wont boot on other occasions >try to install antergos >boot into DE >windows won't scale, don't have any text >try to install sabayon >live disk just freezes nice os guys
still that the firefox dev team decided to no more maintain the alsa backend. i have instantly left firefox when i heard this. in chromium, you can import everything from firefox (even the browsing history) with only 2 mouse clicks (bookmarks->import bookmarks and settings). fuck firefox, fuck mozilla. their browser has been garbage and technology obsolete since a few years now. i should have left when they fired Brendan eich for though crime. Mozilla deserves to die on both a technology point and on an ideology point. please, don't use firefox nor any mozilla products anymore.

How is that relevant?

Beause I just checked my Ubuntu VM and it comes preinstalled (didn't check Debian). >locate popularity-contest
Owen Butler
How any of this fucking relevant? It's not a botnet. Learn the definition of a botnet.
>(didn't check Debian). It's opt-in during the installation of debian, so even if you click "next" like a sperg you end up without it.
Parker Thompson
how that is radical?
Jeremiah Lewis

So I chose Ubuntu as babbys first Linux to dualboot with Windows 10 on my HP craptop. The thing is I have to walk the BIOS to the right EFI every time i wanna boot Ubuntu. I would like to run grubx64.efi by default. The BIOS offers a customized boot path option which I have set to highest priority, that should work, right? Now what path do I actually type in? Or how do I find the correct path in the first place?
Nathaniel Scott
>So I chose Ubuntu with Windows 10 welcome to the botnet
Alexander Moore
>How any of this fucking relevant? I dont know user, maybe some people don't want to let the whole world know what programs they run and how often.
Brayden Clark
It could materialize, come to your home and fuck your mother on the kitchen floor and it still wouldn't be a botnet, learn what a botnet is.
How stable is Unity on Arch? and is Arch by default only going to download stable updates or do you have to set this up? Also, let's say someone develops a program that uses dependencies from the AUR, if one dependency is compromised isn't the program that uses it compromised as well? wouldn't it be better to just use something like Ubuntu or Fedora where default repos are controlled by the developers?
Carson Phillips
hasn't unity been dropped?
Jeremiah Williams
Arch itself is stable like a girl on period.

Possibly the best interview with Stallman I've seen
Probably going to get insulted for this, but does desktop GNU/Linux have any audio enhancement software? When I am using Windows I tend to use this Dolby thing that makes dialogue crisper and normalizes volume, and on Android I use Viper for similar purposes. Watching videos/listening to music on GNU/Linux has seemed lackluster in comparison.
Jason Rodriguez
ree don't touch audio audio engineers work hard to make things sound the best on default settings you are not supposed to change them with equalizers and stuff
Evan Stewart
I'm really tired of Windows, I've using linux on my workstation(laptop) since about a year but now want to change my desktop to linux too. My only concern is the drivers for my RX 470 and i7 7700. I don't play video games too much but I'll probably install Portal 2 and Payday 2 via Steam and want to have a decent 1080p60 perform.
So is there proper drivers for my GPU/CPU on linux(any distro)?
Julian Kelly
Whew, now I understand why these terms of use and privacy policy documents are always so long. >over 16000 characters for an informal personal file server I want to share with family members and friends
Hunter Lopez
Just install a distro on a flash drive and run it from there, if you use something like Ubuntu there will be a program that automatically fetches proprietary drivers and you will see which driver is available.
Brandon Robinson
Yeah, I know it's heresy, but I like the way it sounds better for whatever reason. Turning on a flat EQ and a little bit of whatever the hell "dialogue enhancer" is, as well as the normalizer really makes a difference when trying to hear quiet parts of shows like Elementary over the sound of my AC unit blasting in a shoebox apartment. Using speakers, obviously.
For Viper I like to use it's binaural audio thing because it really does help my Ety-MK5s not be as bothersome.
Zachary Ramirez
steamos has dropped amd official drivers in favor of the open source mesa drivers.

Hello there! You seem to have used the term "open source". The term "open source" was created by a group of people that did not want to be associated with the free software movement. When I say "free" software (which is one of the alternatives preferable to "open source"). It's not about price; in that case I would say "gratis", or "free as in free beer". It's about "freedom"! This is what the free software movement is fighting for. So what is "free" software? Free software is any software that guarantees the user the four essential software freedoms: > 0. Run the program as you wish. > 1. Study the source code and change it so it does what you wish. > 2. Redistribute exact copies of the program. > 3. Distribute your modified version of the program. Some people decided that they wanted to restrict the user; but being able to study and modify the "open source" code is not enough! This is directly hurting the cause of the free software movement because it takes away the sociological "freedom" aspect of free software and turns it into a technological one. So for those reasons I ask that in the future you use the terms "free", "free/libre" or, if necessary "FLOSS" (short for "free/libre and open source"), though the latter should still be avoided.

I'm trying to use awk in a bash script, but the location of what I'm getting with awk changes in different OSs.
I put a variable so the user changes from there, but I have no idea how to pass that to awk correctly.
So far I have something like this:
location='8' ... | awl '{print $7}' | ... I want to replace that $7 with the variable, how do I do that?
Jayden Thompson
Wew I didn't check what I wrote, that's awk not awl.
Cooper Roberts
Use double quotes " instead of single quotes.
Jason Nelson
Oh so doing something like this worked, thanks.
location=8 ... | awk "{print $$location} | ...
Austin Myers
godamn forgot the " at the end lmao.

Matthew Morris
alsaequal GNU/Linux >steamos who cares >but the location of what I'm getting with awk changes in different OSs. what exactly are trying to retrieve? you can pass a env variable to awk via -v: awk -v var=foo

hey boys n Sup Forumsirls,
so ive been switching to mint and i installed wireshark but can seem to have access to scanner on my ports because of privileges(im the only user), ive tried to run it as root(wont work), says i got to change the privilege. any idea on how to do that shit
Isaiah Mitchell
>mint user >cant use basic program features >cant permissions kek
Joshua Barnes
You shouldn't run wireshark as root anyway. Create a group for wireshark with cucked privileges. Check the archwiki.

thanks i did it myself,
i used :
sudo dpkg-reconfigure wireshark-commun
and told it to let non-root user to capture packets :)

I dont know, you have provided zero details for us to attempt to help you with.
There are system wide equalizer that you can set to emphasize the mids. I didn't even know system wide volume normalizing was a thing, what does it do? Like if you are playing music and a sound notification goes off does it make it the same volume as the tunes so you can't hear it? What if there is a quiet but in a movie, does it make it louder?
Grayson Wood
Look at your logs. First would be dmesg while plugging the in, see is they are recognized as input devices. Second look at X logs to see if they are auto detected.
I'ill answer myself because could be useful for someone. It's possible, at least in Ubuntu/Debian, to get mesa 17.1 working on kernel 4.9.
Jonathan Evans
>What if there is a quiet but in a movie, does it make it louder? Yeah, it seems to do this on Windows and Android.

Trying to install a linux distro as a dual boot with windows, Tried installing Manjaro but there were issues with my GTX 970 GPU. Any other distros I should give a shot? ( Can't install arch cause im a retard and I'm most likely going to run into the same problems as Manjaro ) I was most likely going to give Linux Mint KDE A shot.

I'm trying to catch the command I actually run in bash. I found that $BASH_COMMAND will print the current command, but when I run an alias, $BASH_COMMAND contains the *real* command, not the alias. How to catch the alias?
