can someone recommend an ultra basic MS-Paint type program for Linux? I tried Pinta and it was awful but using imageresize.org to crop pictures is horrifically inefficient

Didnt get a response last thread, trying here.

I am trying to create a RAID with 4x 8TB drives, but even though each has been formatted to 7.27TB, the RAID controller only sees each drive as 1.2TB
Before this had 3x 2TB in RAID, and the HDs showed up correctly as 1.8TB each.

Now a second issue: doesn't mater what RAID I create it wont show up in Windows. It still sees each individual drive unallocated. I can format each one, and use it individually, even though they show up as being part of an array inside the RAID config.

If I plug the old HDs back into the system, it detects the old RAID, and works fine.

Even if I try each individual drive by itself after doing a fresh format, it still sees it as 1.2TB

I made no other BIOS changes, and looked everything over.

BIOS is on the latest update, nothing new out.

What do? I already spend like 2 hours replugging drives, trying idividual ports.
Picked up a used RAID card my friend had, LSI Megaraid 9040-4i
Will try this in tomorrow.
Mobo is a Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R

I need a new U.S based VPN that isn't a major provider so I can still use certain websites and services that block major VPN providers.
What do?

You know how when you delete a file and it is still 'there' on the disk, right? Does the same thing happen for an SSD?

so I need a super cheap computer with linux to learn programming in college. Can't take my desktop with me.
I have an old 720p vga monitor. If I buy an orange pi zero, can I use amazon.in/Magideal-Female-HD15-Pin-Component-Adapter/dp/B01IM4J4YS?tag=googinhydr18418-21
to connect the pi to the monitor?
And the orange pi zero only has one usb port. How do I connect a keyboard and mouse at the same time?

Buy a Thinkpad T400 for $70-80.

is there much difference between an intel and amd processor with the same number of cores running at the same frequency, and the same cache and stuff?

I can't, i ended up using gimp, which is more complicated than i would like, but that was all i could find

Why can't Unix-based OS run .exe files? Can ann Unix OS just be programmed to run .exe? Are they really locked to the Micro$oft environment?

yes.

Try searching for US servers on softether vpn
krita?

Yes, huge.

Intel whips the floor with AMD when it comes to Singlecore performance which is important for pretty much everything thanks to the lack of optimization of programs.
AMD selling point is the more core/thread for cheaper tactic, even its weaker, if a program uses all cores and threads it will be more efficient than a powerful CPU with a few cores.

krita is not ultra basic but you'll love it
make sure you have wine installed. now double click the .exe and if nothing's wrong it would work.
about ".exe" files, they are compiled for windows. if they are cross platform program, you can compile a binary for the os your are on

TLDR: Intel is better but more expensive.

So, if an .exe file doesn't have cross-system support, does that mean that it cannot be ran natively, without WINE?

so a single intel core running at the same frequency as a single amd core will be faster? is there a way to measure or figure out how much faster?

>thanks to the lack of optimization of programs
its not as simple as that, some programs are really hard to program in a scalable manner.

Pretty much.
This is why game emulation sucks with AMD.
How faster? depends on both CPU generation and features.
I said the lack of it, not that it was easy to program.

nope.
and vice versa, a program compiled for linux can't run on windows.

How does something like this work?

If I have 4 usb sticks plugged in could I transfer to all of them at once? If I had a xbox controller in one and a usb stick in another could I use my controller while reading from the USB?

Yup, google "IPC (instructions per cycle).

Yes, it could affect latency of the controller tho.

used t400 costs ~$160 here :/

yes to both questions
they'll be considered as separate ports for all in tents and porpoises

Where are you from?

sri lanka.

I was visiting Times.com reading an article and I had to crash the browser and then read it as fast as I could, because the "requests" kept piling up reaching over 100K.

How can one avoid that?

I remember doing something with xbindkeys long ago.
whenever I press ctrl f it open up a white terminal. and when I say "killall xbindkeys;exit" and press ctrl f, the white terminal no longer comes up (till I reboot) and ctrl f opens up the search box, as it should be. How do I stop xbindkeys from starting up on every boot?

Well you live in the middle of nowhere next to india so its kind to be expected, they are only cheap in America and UK.

Look for other cheap laptops.
X220, T420, X200, T61, etc.

oh thanks, that's wicked.

second question, is there going to be any problems if i mount a waterblock upside down

is your browser uptodate? tried disabling addons? tried copy pasting the url to archive.is and reading it there?

>tried copy pasting the url to archive.is and reading it there?
That works, thanks.

nope

Ah, i see. Thank you for your time and clarify.

have a nice evening, keep yourself cool/warn whenever you are

Hey Sup Forumsods

For whatever reason Chrome just won't open on my laptop anymore. I've uninstalled it and reinstalled it several times, I used the Chrome cleanup tool, I've scanned with Maleware Bytes and Windows Defender, neither of which found anything so I don't think it's any form of virus keeping it from opening.

Is there anything else my computer might be doing that stops it from opening?

Run Adwcleaner.
Cant you even see it in the task manager?

warn me about what

what do you know that I don't

windows?
open taskmanager, what does it say about the chrome process?

Are certs more important than a degree?

Thinking of creating a RAID array, since I'm on a relatively tight budget with concerns to harddisks is there any reason as to why I should use RAID 1 over RAID 5 or 6, or is there something even better/cost effective when it comes to data redundancy?
Cloud storage is kind of out of the question since upload speeds of ~50kb/s

youre welcome

if its ubuntu i think it was the latest update, fucked my shit up too

raid one creates 2 identical drives if something happens, and it fails. i doubt raid 5 or 6 would do the same

archive.is can also be good for getting access to articles that are behind a pay wall.

where do you live to get 50kb/s?

Chrome shows up absolutely nowhere in the Task Manager as far as I can tell

Doesn't RAID 5 allow one drive to fail and RAID 6 2 drives since it has parity checks?
Australia

yeah, but then you have to rebuild the array. you also have to rebuild a raid 1 array, but i think it's simpler. also if you're on a tight budget, you can do raid 1 with less drives.

Try running a portable version and see what happens

running AdwCleaner right now and it appears to be finding a few different things so hopefully it fixes it

Run adwcleaner.

Then boot into safe mode and run it.

I have never legitimately solved one of pic related.

I realized they would make the perfect encryption engine, like an enigma machine on steroids.

I programmed a virtual rubix cube that encrypts data files

each spot on this virtual rubix cube instead of being color coded holds a single byte of the soon-to-be encrypted file. The cube will scale in size to be suitable loading the entire plaintext file into. During the read/write process it performs logical shifts on the bytes.

The encryption engine can make any transformation a rubix cube can (the normal twists along x y and z axis) as well as a few transformations I came up with to give it some more entropy on the output.

is this what they call autism?

upload that code under the gpl and link dat shit brother

Unless uptime is a critical concern, find another solution than raid. It only protects you from drive failure, which is one of many risks you face. In other words, raid is the worst form of 'backup' for most situations. Try setting up another storage solution somewhere else on your own network if internet bandwidth is a concern.

post below said it perfectly
zfs has automatic snapshotting and raidz or zmirror'd zpools

theres automatic per bit checksumming too with data dedup or opposite (multiple copies of a specific file spread out)

will do.

Im about 80% done right now. Its actually been quite fun applying all of the number theory I've been learning to something practical

2TB+ drives were first supported on 60 series motherboards for intel RAID, won't work on your board.

Assuming you mean megaraid 9240-4i, >2TB arrays should work, but won't be bootable.

thats creative as fuck man!
im pretty impressed honestly.

imagine having a peripheral device that anybody can do a phsyical hand gesture to use as a encrypted authentification!

muscle memory passwords!

if only 3d printers where cheaper for prototyping

pretty much a rubiks cube using multiple stepper motors as the connecting axel

Are there any hardware solutions (like a NAS) that use ZFS?
I'm fine if there isn't but it would be much easier on my end since I don't usually use linux and wouldn't be able to monitor it very well

what are some Sup Forums related rss feeds i could subscribe to?

Is the difference between 1493 and 1708 significant enough to warrant a difference of $50?

So adwcleaner found and fixed a lot of stuff but upon rebooting, Chrome still just doesn't even begin to cooperate

Download Microsoft Autorun, open it as administrator and post logon tab.

Again, try running chrome portable and see what happens.

That seems have worked out fine actually

Well, you could just roll with that then, although I don't think updates are automatic. It does suggest that something is fucked up in your registry or the program files. You could try running revo uninstaller then reinstalling to a new location.

I'm getting too tired to mess with this anymore, downloading that seemed to have fixed my Chrome situation to a decent degree so it should be fine for now. It still had all my tabs from like a month ago when Chrome just died out of the blue too, not sure if that means anything and if I just did something dumb or what.

Thanks for all your help and suggestions everyone!

user could you post your logon/startup list before you go?
There could be something stopping it from running when you start windows.

I have windows and arch dual booted

What should I NOT run in wine and instead run in windows?

>PS CS6
>Scrivener
>Steam
>Substance Painter
>Ableton Live 9
>Max ^
>Matlab

This what you mean?

the rest

>Microsoft windows base...
You have malware, and im not talking about windows.

Task manager startup list is not the same than the one shown in Autorun, download it and check it.

Please don't be real. I'm trying not to kill myself today.

Sorry, I'm in this thread for a reason guys

Well for starters, you don't need all the anti virus - all that stuff will get in the way of permissions and fuck everything up

Here is mine as example.

So is Microsoft Windows Base not supposed to be there then? Is that bullshit? I wouldn't know

Any recommendations for what I should be getting rid of?

If you see that, or Powershell, or cmd in the startup list its always bad news.

What do you recommend I do then?

Just download Microsoft Autorun, and uncheck it, it will stop it from starting.
You can manually delete it if you want too.
technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963902.aspx

Malwarebytes and Adwcleaner wont detect it because its mostly a script that runs when windows starts instead malware.

uses mdadm/zfs/btrfs software raid

nuke installation and start fresh

If you look into your detail lists you might see it running with a random filename too but its not always the case.

You installed a chronium adware installer or ran a infected USB recently.

Also dont touch anything outside the logon tab.

UNINSTALL LIST
>Facebook installer (I don't use fb so you may need it for something, messenger?)
>McAfee
>Bing service
>OneDrive (if you don't use it)
>Norton (just backup to an external hard drive or USB)

DISABLE LIST
>Adobe reader
>Java update scheduler
>Skype

For antivirus just install malwarebytes (ignore the pro version thing) and install the uBlock origin addon when your browser works

or do this

Jesus, I feel like that might be my only option at this point.

Not exactly sure what any of these means, but it does not look good. This is embarrassing honestly.

Let's hear it boys, I have thick skin

...

It's A LOT of autorun my friend

And etc.

Did you run it as admin?
If not, File>Run as administrator

Post scheduled tasks tab.

you're on a laptop, right?
a lot of it is bloatware nonsense that comes preinstalled that will still be there if you reinstall through the stock partition

easiest way to get a clean install is to probably do your own fresh installation rather than figuring out what is normal and what is bloatware junk

I got this thing like 7 years ago and I've obviously been taking fuckall care of it

I just didn't know it ran this deep

Most of that comes preinstalled with the laptop, its normal.
Also the malware that stops you from running chrome is quite normal, is annoying.

Usually its done to stop you from running chrome and use whatever browser hijack was installed, either a modified dev version of chrome or firefox.

10/10, start again.

pastebin.com/smjvLZN4

>chrome
Chronium*

>
cygwin is what you should be using in the first place

why?

Could you post the scheduled tasks tab?
Also run it as admin?

The startup lists wont be complete unless you do it.

It's dead Jim
