Hello Sup Forums. So I'm thinking about moving to Windows 10 from GNU/Linux. What are the caveats?
I know about mandatory update issues and telemetry, but my main concern is security. Is Windows security really that weak that it needs a Windows Defender? I never needed any GNU/Linux defenders and never though about viruses and cryptolockers as long as I'm not running anything with root rights.
Am I safe if I receive updates right away (like I have choice, have I?) and don't run any suspicious software with escalated through UAC rights?
How bad is Linux Subsystem for Windows?
Anything else I should be worried about? I'd like to read stories of your experience moving to Windows.
Jason Thomas
Bump.
Logan Davis
Don't download shit for shaddy websites, block scripts for unknown / non trusted sites and you'll be fine, no need for any anti virus botnets.
If you do torrent games and stuff, just install malware bytes
Jaxson Morris
Why are you switching to windows though? You could you just run it in a VM.
Julian Rivera
>I'm thinking about moving to Windows 10 from GNU/Linux.
Being this retarded though.
Eli Collins
Download a bunch of distros that look good and try them in a live USB. No need to wipe out your hard drive.
Noob friendly distros: All of the official ubuntu forks ElementaryOS Solus OS
Zachary Perry
>I have the reading comprehension of a 3yr old.
RIP.
Isaiah Cooper
>Is Windows security really that weak that it needs a Windows Defender? Yes, and after wannacry it won't be enough (unless you use Common Sense 2017) >How bad is Linux Subsystem for Windows? Broken as fuck
Gabriel Smith
i see no reason to do this other than for video games. if you're not playing windows-exclusive games, you should be running a linux distro. end of story.
Lucas Williams
>I'm not actually a linux user.
Parker Murphy
>caveats Questionable resource utilization is the primary one. In some ways it's "intelligent" about the programs you run most often, but in general it's a hog.
>Is Windows security really that weak Well yes, but in ways that Windows Defender doesn't really address anyway. I think Defender's only real value is in the firewall/network protection functions. The antivirus is a wash. The whole device health aspect is actually a major annoyance and does nothing but force certain settings on you through nagging.
>Am I safe Somewhat.
>How bad is Linux Subsystem Fairly bad. You're fine if you want to run some simple scripts or terminal-based packages though.
>Anything else You're going to notice your system running horribly slowly for the first ~30 minutes after your initial boot into Windows. Don't be alarmed. The best thing you can do is simply sit back and watch TV or something. It's perfectly normal and will pass. It only happens on the very first boot.
You should also worry about the Start menu. It's a mess no matter how much you try to clean it up. Classic Shell is a godsend.
Easton Harris
Where can I find a copy of windows 10?
Adrian Watson
Are you a babby? Windows is necessary for viable CAD and video production software.
Zachary Baker
Microsoft provides both the installer (free download) and licenses online.
Liam Price
this
nobody whose used a *nix system for more than a week would SWITCH to a windows system; it's an asinine thing to do regardless given the variety of other options available
Alexander Butler
It's complicated. Generally I found myself spending too much time maintaining the system instead of actually being productive.
Like right now I have cracklings through pulseaudio equalizer after Debian upgrade. I need an equalizer and it seems like it is not maintained anymore. Right now it annoys me the most and rather spending hours hoping it has a fix I think I might spend this time moving to WIndows.
GPU acceleration in Chrome doesn't work for some websites.
Real mess with mime types and default applications. Debian has BROWSER variable in bash profile, update-alternatives, couple of places for mimeapps.list.
Similar shit with appearance. There is no single place to put my theme/font/hinting configuration. There are different places for qt4, qt5, gtk2 and gtk3 configurations.
DE would somewhat solve some of those problems, but I don't use a DE. I was really happy with my xmonad setup (best window management I've had so far), but integrating xmonad with a DE has some caveats depending on a DE. gnome-settings-daemon doesn't work at all, mate-settings-daemon messes with DPI i've set through nvidia config (using high-dpi display). Sometimes I use a second monitor and I can't set the different DPI for each of them.
I'm pretty sure all of the problems mentioned have a solution, but I'm just tired and I don't want to mess with it. I just want things to work. I want to share my Downloads directory with another computer without complicated samba setup - last time I used it there were problems with sharing arbitrary user directory regarding ownership. I want to click and run Lightworks instead of searching forums for the libraries I need to download and put somewhere. I want to configure my trackball buttons with a nice GUI instead of blindly messing with xorg.
I'm just tired and I want to do stuff instead of messing with the system.
Leo Flores
Cons: Botnet Pros: Everything else
Carter Morris
>Using Debian
There is your problem.
James Smith
>windows 10 >google chrome Enjoy your botnets faggot.
Leo Hill
Implying any other distro doesn't have exact same problems.
Luke Turner
Using another distro, not having those problems.
Lucas Flores
>I'm just tired and I want to do stuff instead of messing with the system. Congrats on finally growing up. Using a computer to play pretend hackers is embarrassing and a waste. Just try to forget you were ever like that. You're doing better than at least half the board now.
Noah Murphy
i FUCKING LOVE WINDOWS 10 , fuck linux Id rather not care about my OS and just be productive. The NSA/CIA can spy on you through any OS.
Parker Brooks
Chrome is for dummys, use opera
Carson Walker
Sup Forums is 18+ buddy. Come back in 6 years. Or don't you'll probably end up happier.
Jace James
I hope one day modern medicine will be able to cure you of this utter retardation.
John James
ThisFor the most part you should be good with the usual common sense. There is some aspects of spyware that Microsoft has in windows 10 in there settings and some more hidden bullshit in the registry so i'd look up the fix on that if you're concerned on that end. But then again windows in general isn't the best place for privacy linux always has been. But as original op said as long as its just simple stuff even torrenting. You should be solid. And if you're a gamer you should be better with more updates, and games that are compatible on windows so there's that. So happy trails friend :)
Carter Sanders
It's okay, man. You don't have to be ashamed anymore. You've stopped using your computer as little more than a roleplaying prop to play pretend hackers with, and that's a good thing. You can stop feeling concerned with how the other "hackers" are going to see you, and worry about just using your computer.
Nathaniel Parker
everything on windows is cancer
the sooner you understand that the better
even normies hate it, im not sure the reason smartphones are popular these days and desktops are down isn't just due to windows sucking
windows is about running software that only runs on windows. that is all that is good about windows. the rest of your experience is simply trying to live with the cancer
>changing basic settings etc a complete nightmare, despite linux being the supposedly less friendly ui >muddled update system, no version number >updates will stall shutdown and/or constantly annoy you >system folders aren't well separated from user folders, all of the file explorer is a big clusterfuck >making your way around it is a nightmare, you must use the search because you'd never find anything otherwise >botnet >bloatware, random shit you don't remember installing >ads on the start menu >not even ms knows what the ui is supposed to look like
Elijah Long
Are you one of the fags always searching for a faster safer way to browse Sup Forums and DL game of thrones? Also opera is good AF.
Lucas Phillips
>being this salty that your abortion of an OS will never gain any real server marketshare.
If you can't figure out how to use a real OS there is always one like the pic for little babies like you.
Asher Myers
>maybe if i make it look like i was trolling before, no one will notice how badly that user's comments got to me Hey, it might work.
Julian Harris
You replied to the wrong person you fucking spastic.
Chase Cox
So Fucking asshurt that you have reply to my post made for the op :/
David Long
Not even trolling. If you fucking windows retards can't work out how to use an actual Operating System you cunts may as well stop using a computer altogether.
Sebastian Rodriguez
>post made for OP >was a reply to a post by me >Be me >not OP
Please don't breed.
Adrian Rivera
The caveats are that it actually fucking works.
Wyatt Gonzalez
...
Anthony Bennett
>everyone who realizes that i'm just a know-nothing kiddo using gnu/linux to live out juvenile "hackerman" fantasies is a windows retard I thought you GNUcucks were supposed to have a firm grasp on logic?
Leo Sanders
>GNUcucks
mfw I'm not running GNU software.
Austin Peterson
Wow go back 5th grade. If i ever have to see that type of grammar again i'm going to hurl.
Brody Reed
mfw you try to pretend you're not a mactoddler
Parker Sanchez
>Bitching about bad grammar while using bad grammar.
Wew lad.
Nicholas Howard
Not sure if trolling or just retarded.
Elijah Wright
Look how broken down you've become. This is why G is fucking joke; literal hacker wannabes that act all tough behind a screen and insult people that come here for help. Just stfu you larping 10 year old.
Levi Robinson
You seem mad that Linux lost another user, why is it so personal to you? Do you have sand in your vagina, do you need a wet nappy?
Levi Wright
Please stop giving Linux users a bad name.
Austin Perry
That's one less person for him to "hack the planet" with on IRC.
Hunter Ramirez
ITT: Shills justifying paying hundreds of dollars to be spied on.
Stop the planet, I want off.
Joseph Long
Unrelated, but I was wanting to setup a xen garden for a windows 7 machine that can run inside of a linux distro Which distro is best for what I am describing if I have full VM passthrough?
Levi Hernandez
Fedora.
Angel Brown
No, it's "hack the planet" you fucking hapless technoweenie. You can't play pretend hackers with us until you've seen the movie at least once, and have Linux installed.
Christian Carter
Fuck off you Linux freaks. Windows fucking works so why would anyone want to install an OS made by basement dwellers?
Jason Campbell
If you don't mind me asking Is this a real answer or sarcasm?
Xavier Adams
Holy shit just shut the fuck up.
Anthony Rodriguez
>gotta use gadzooks/lunatix to look like a special snowflake hackermanz, but i can't live without muh gaymes
Christian Phillips
sarcasm
Oliver Carter
It was a serious answer. While I don't actually have experience with what you're doing I have researched it a good bit as I was planning something similar. It seems that most people suggested Fedora because it's up to date and their virtualisation support is tops.
Andrew Phillips
Then get it right, you n00b.
lol "stop" the planet How can you fk it up that bad?
Jaxon Gray
Did your mother drop you on your head when you were little?
Camden Morales
I'm not the one who can't even quote a movie right, n00bl0rd.
Jace Jones
>trolling this badly
School over for the day m8?
Colton James
Pls keep talking cause you're giving me more entertainment than you really should. But please by all means continue to make yourself look like an even bigger retard than i thought you to originally be. But good job you managed to completely fuck up the thread thank you so much :/
Dylan Walker
>LibreCAD >Cinerella
Lincoln Miller
>completely fuck up the thread thank you so much :/ Yeah, that was the idea. If I let a thread like this go on for very long at all then it devolves into a 300+ post shitfest of anime desktops and hacker roleplaying.
Justin Parker
Pls keep talking tell me more; tell me how it makes you feel that you've completely fucked up my thread, derailed it off course from its original purpose. Luckily i did get what i wanted from it before you showed up and utterly destroyed it. But PLS TELL ME WHAT YOU GOT FROM FUCKING IT ALL UP!!!!????
Carter Brooks
Am I supposed to stop posting now because you're pretending to be some falseflagging wojak poster? Yeah, that's not gonna work. I'm going to be here all day making sure this thread stays derailed.
Ayden Cook
Wow you people are aids.
Kevin Bennett
Pls by all means now that you've scared off all the sane people how do you entail to keep derailing its literally just you and me. And you're my entertainment for the night so keep going dumbass.
Christopher Williams
This is the Sup Forums you wanted. I'm just giving it to you.
Hudson Lee
One more question for you guys: how is safe to steal software from trackers? Like thepiratebay, kickass and rutracker. Do they often put cryptolockers and such stuff into keygens and installators?
Leo Taylor
>maybe if i make it seem like he's doing what i want he'll go away
lol naw
Sebastian Martinez
Fuck you dude.
Aaron Jackson
Well i want you here dude until the end. It's like a sick co op parasite system we both need each other so pls stay.
Jaxson Clark
If you can't outhack Russian ransomware you don't belong on this board, newfag. Leave.
Jeremiah Morales
You're cute, but isn't it bedtime already for kids?
Gavin Evans
Yeah, I wasn't going anywhere. All pathetic attempts at reverse psychology notwithstanding. You're not the only retard I have on hook in this thread anyway. It'd be a waste to leave.
Colton Anderson
I fucking ask a simple question and get told to fuck off. Ok thanks.
Ethan Morris
You're not fucking off nearly fast enough, kiddo.
Benjamin Gray
Seriously dude fuck you! You derail my thread for no fucking reason. Then all you have are these 5 year old insults this is why Sup Forums is a fucking joke.
Christopher Martin
How many more people are you going to pretend to be in this thread? That post timer is really fucking you up right now.
Oliver Clark
>outhack Russian ransomware How is that?
Nathan Wilson
Wow assumptions up the ass.
Parker Lewis
you dont have to steal shit, win10 has tons of freeware
Jaxson Robinson
Shut the fuck up Wasting this shit on a stupid slide thread sage this shit.
Bentley Green
no
Ethan Campbell
Am I late for the Razor & Blade Show? Or is the roleplaying over now? ;_;
Zachary Adams
No this dumbasswon't stfu
Cooper Campbell
That's not an answer to my question.
Noah Hernandez
But you are that dumbass. Seems like there's a simple solution to your problem.
Julian Rogers
Then go fuck yourself. Were not here to hold your hand either your a hacker or your not.
Angel Scott
>Not using BRAVE browser C U C K U C K
Jason White
Holy shit wtf is wrong with you autist?
Zachary Foster
He doesn't know :/
Luke Collins
Fucking baited :)
Samuel Hernandez
>What are the caveats? Less control over your system, botnet >I know about mandatory update issues and telemetry, but my main concern is security. Loonix fags will tell you what a mess it is, and it can be, but since implementing UAC a literal decade ago the problems have been curtailed dramatically. Usual advice about separate user and admin accounts still stands even though most software under admin will only elevate with a prompt. >Is Windows security really that weak that it needs a Windows Defender? It's built-in antimalware and nothing more. Don't misunderstand. >Am I safe if I receive updates right away (like I have choice, have I?) and don't run any suspicious software with escalated through UAC rights? Yes. That's common sense. >How bad is Linux Subsystem for Windows? Don't know, tech press seems to like it though. >Anything else I should be worried about? Perhaps if you've formatted any drives with something other than FAT/ExFAT/NTFS. Drivers are available, can't attest to their quarity.
Josiah Barnes
>updates will stall shutdown why is that a con?
David Harris
Licenses are not free, however. If you Google a bit, it's not difficult.
Eli Powell
>Windows 10 is no longer supported in this PC ... I didn't thought that was possible, like, at all.
>Is Windows security really that weak that it needs a Windows Defender? Common_sense_2017.exe works just fine too, so not really.
>Am I safe if I receive updates right away (like I have choice, have I?) and don't run any suspicious software with escalated through UAC rights? You can always use LTSB and block the updates right after the OS' running.
Elijah Robinson
>Everything else It's a buggy shitshow. The shutdown (hibernation) is worse than on my linux rig.
