bit of a toss-up between 95-00 and 01-06 for me

2004 was peak internet. It went to shit in 2007.

2001-2006 was the internet at its best. I still believed in its possibilities back then.

Everything after 2015 is cancer.

You are correct

There are good things in this era too.
Forums were shit back then, the powertripping and autistic mods were too much.
Not to mention the birth of pop ups and ad malware.
there are good things now you just have to search them

The internet died when Google+ was born

Vapor wave is unoriginal, it's just rehashed 80/90s/early 2000s stuff with a specific name

up until early youtube and Sup Forums, I guess 2001-2010

then it went downhill FAST

The amount of stuff you could view for free without copyright bullshit before 2006 was pretty cool.
Still i was only a wee lad at the the time so I didn't explore much. It has gotten much worse since 2012 for sure. The amount of ads is deafening.

>early youtube and Sup Forums
>2010

>Vapor wave is unoriginal
That is exactly the point, only creation now no limits.

1980-1991.
Best discussions
Text only/vast majority of the times
No normies/plebians.
Early www was pretty neat too. Nowadays its ok, better than it was in 00s.

yeah I gave it some slack, it was alright back then

i mean that wasn't early for either of them

>usenet autism
lmao dude

The Internet did not begin until January 1, 1983. You saying it began in 1980 is factually wrong

>7 years between 2003 and 2010
>7 years between 2010 and 2017
user is referring to the first half of 4chans lifespan as "early Sup Forums"
checks out

For me I mostly associate the 80s with fidonet and bbses

let's say it was the time when the first generation of users were still very active and involved, and iphone-normies were the minority

Just like Runescape

hmm, i suppose that's fair enough
while there isn't really a hard definition for what is "early" and "late", i wouldn't personally just split it in half like that, as it leaves no middle, and it also means that 2010 borders both early and late

poll could be renamed to how old are you

SAGE!

But Runescape peaked in 2007 and started going downhill around 2009.

LOL. Just noticed the OP copy pasted it from r9k but changed 89 to 83.

Before AOL was the most interesting times for sure. Bah, none of the 25 year olds here would know that though...

2001-2006: Classic Era is my favorite
When I'm surfing back in those days I could actually feel as if I'm getting deeper and "absorbed" into a massive nested labyrinth of undiscovered gems. You could actually feel that there are millions of websites. Each website has a unique experience. These days they arr rook same

These days its like there are only 5 websites? Sup Forums, google, youtube, facebook, reddit?

Much of the reason is because people are too lazy to make their own(hand-code geocities-style) websites. They just put it on their social media accounts. Social media destroyed the internet. Imo people could still make unique websites while using modern tech instead of similar-looking wordpress themed bullshit

Also pornsites! 2001 - 2009 the TGP era!
Where have all the TGP's gone? All TGPs have outdated content now. Wtf?

2005 to 2010 was a great time for internet, the memes were spicy and esoteric. now the memes are lame and bland, commercialized even.

but i'll admit, it's a great ass time for porn and it's only getting better with HDVR4K

not everyone is american, either

2001-2006 for me. Honestly 2007-2013 wasn't too bad, despite the cancer and web 2.0 creep.

I've been on computers since I sat on my grandpappy's lap (now a dead lap ;_;) playing with his calculator on windows 95.

I think there's a way to bring back that nostalgic feeling the old internet had, that mystifying amazingness and endless possibility.

Honestly, it'll take a decentralized layer over the internet, some new/better programming languages, and I suppose, those who want to come. The internet was so good back then after all because interesting people inhabited it. Interesting people created it.

I'll go kill myself now for the blog bullshit, just feeling... Nostalgic.

First used internet in 06 so I guess the classic era?

Granted there was a lot less cancer back then

90s-2007

in the 90's you could literally make thousands of dollars a day just by putting a porn affiliate link on a page and spamming it on altavista.

also security was shit everywhere, so scriptkiddies could get access to a lot of stuff

The internet has just become an extension of real life. I remember how fun it was to meet new people on chat rooms and forums.

Neither.

BBS > internet

both are cyberspace bro, don't be so 'shwa.

2001-2006 desu

after 2013 everything just went shit

>there are people on Sup Forums who voted for 2007-2013 or 2014-

Early 2000s, the internet was mature enough that it was easily accessible, but still young enough that not everything was connected. Going from one forum to another really felt like stepping onto a completely different planet, everywhere had its own completely unique culture and so on. Nowadays every website's culture is just normalfag twitter/facebook culture with a few inside jokes sprinkled on top. Even places like Sup Forums have fallen victim to this in recent years. IRC is probably the last refuge of the disconnected internet, and even then it's limited to a few obscure channels on low-population networks.

pic related, it used to be a really fun experience surfing the web and finding new websites. Using the internet was an actual adventure, nowadays I doubt most people go to more than the same 4-5 websites they have on their bookmarks bar.

2007 was the non return point: Youtube, Twitter, Google being what is now...

I really miss the old time when for watching vids you have to search them on several different sites.

2002 - 2006

RIP

I go with Dot-Com Bubble Era

>internet is the wild west, not controlled
>few to no ads
>exciting conversations could still be had
>close to zero attention whoring
>no social network cancer
>no bloat, most sites were pure HTML
>download Napster and pirate like crazy

>few to no ads
>no bloat
Want to know how I know you weren't actually alive then?

excessive javascript use was all over the place in the late 90s/early 2000s and was made even worse by the fact that nothing was properly standardised, so you'd have to have 3 different browsers installed and switch between them depending on which page you were using

and claiming there was no ads is just ridiculous, it was the height of the retarded seizure-inducing flashing banners shit

>tfw future is megacorp dystopia

I still remember funny stuff being made in 2008 and 2009.

I miss interflop

It was impossible to use the internet then for any non windows user because many websites only worked for internet explorer

Classic era.
It was for me the years I started using internet for real.
2000-2003 nabbed loads of anime pictures and lastly came to Sup Forums because the anime image hunting
2003-2005 started downloading anime instead of anime pictures
2006-present stopped giving a shit about right or wrong.

95-2005 and I liked early YouTube so parts of 2005-2007/8

All of my memories of old internet were of the times I spent on actual forums and I never ever want to go back. Forums are shit.

>avatars
>signatures
>postcount stars
>moderator dicksucking

Things are bad now but things are also better.

Forum moderators are nerds who finally got power over someone, hence why many of them become nazis about it and you have to stroke their ego well to become a moderator too.

Point of view as Internet user
90's first contact with Internet.. (pic related)

Late 90's - 2006 The golden era

2007~12 - not that bad, but closer to 2012 hmm... that felling - something not right started to happen
...
2012~13 cancer era has come. Websites started converting to barely readable 200% size scaled, 150%resource usage new fashion shite.
Just realized that net already reached it's apogeum earlier and just going to degrade.

2017 sitting here and thinking why Interned turned to gaygantic wasteland (always was junkyard but now 1000% pure cancer is going on)

I belive you :-D

Now seriously.
I'm watching shit happening. Corporations absorbing smaller ones or just fusions of big ones to make one megacorp making even bigger crap that they did separately is not a good thing in my opinion.

1998-2004
windows 98 made the internet comfy.
before myspace and the social media cancer

the fact you could have a username cooldude123 instead of your real name made a huge difference (thanks facebook)

also, for your listening pleasure
youtube.com/watch?v=GSRG0TqxLWc

Sup Forums killed the internet

>comfy as an arbitrary descriptor for something "good"

That's not what it means, you autistic fuck.
Follow your own advice and go back.

>autistic as an arbitrary descriptor for something "bad"

That's not what it means, you autistic fuck.
Follow your own advice and go back.

>le comfy le autistic le le le le

1995-2000: Dot-Com Bubble Era

I see..
Seems as if we spotted another SJW lurking the board.

...

...

>le filthy frank

>reaction image

>there are people on Sup Forums >25 years old

Classic era, broadband finally started to spread, online gaming was still very much dependent on the actual players for things like hosting and tournament play. Online communities were still very separated from each other, so every group had their own little inside jokes ("meme" was luckily not really a thing outside of explaining the "going viral" phenomenon)
The piratebay was still good back then, and other torrentsites flourished too. Many people were still exploring all the cool possibilities instead of trying to make money off of it.

youtube.com/watch?v=2Y1CDy5rSJQ

I grew up poor and didn't really get to experience the internet until 1998. My 70 year old grandfather got a WebTV and I would look up porn when he would go out to do old guy stuff. He had an inkjet printer connected to it and was anyways bitching about how fast the ink would run out. I had mega stacks of potato resolution porn prints.

2000-2009

I started to browse the internet during about '03, but I don't have any clear memory of it until about '06~'07 — pretty much when I discovered porn actually. I guess I was too young before to remember correctly. So I can't really say for anything before 2006, but I do prefer the '07~'13 extra to the current one.

>le epic right-facing meme arrow

2003~2009. Anime websites at their best. All kinds of fan sites.

I disagree with the notion that Internet went to shit the moment social media appeared. It became a problem when it started to become the main part of the Internet (~2012).

Back in 2007 you already had Facebook and Twitter, but Newgrounds, forums, anime fansites, etc. were still big and their "own" thing, not FB fanpages.

Around '03... I remember messing around with Genesis3D and eventually Baja engine, thinking I would create a game. All on that Windows 98 IBM PC....

I remember making some stupid shit haha.

bajaengine.com/
realityfactory.info/cms/
genesis3d.com/

I remember trying some shit with reality factory after it, never really took to it.

2005-2009
Prove me wrong

ITT underage faggots pretend to know about the early 2000 internet

We actually do and it was phone bills through the roof.

I don't. Flash Player was a canker sore. Thank goodness for HTML5.

2009 when my laptop was still somewhat "up to snuff" with what everyone was using and it didn't take me 3 minutes and 10M of javascript to display a "Hi" in 72px font on a pastel-coloured background

>t.25 yo

Some fag from Sup Forums has made a search engine for web 1.0 sites only.
Wibr.me
I'm making my own shitty imageboard to put on it at the moment

it's like using google! beta again

BBSes, son.

I remember really loving the internet around the time when ebaums world had about 300 videos. Also newgrounds and mad amounts of full episodes of stuff on YouTube around 2004-2006 I think. Didn't really have a decent computer before then.
I think it was about 2012/13 where everything on the internet seemed to primarily get sucked into the social media realm and every other thing became an add. Still nowadays I don't seem to get anywhere near as much computer cancer(viruses/malware etc) as I did at first. Maybe I'm just not as retarded nowadays but idk.
I still feel behind on the social media aspect of things though. I don't like to really talk to anyone unless we're gonna hang out and I never add/talk to anyone I don't know on Facebook, much less use anything else to meet people. Im not even that old just turned 25.
I'd be fine honestly if the internet and it's availability stayed as it was in 2006. Just seems like nowadays there's too much shitposting/reposting, unnecessary sites that do the same thing, and ads but pretty much the same amount of content.
Well actually throw in the ability to stream porn in hd and I'm good.

Current era because it's fastest

What categorizes as classic era.

I mean shit.

>Get new PC
>Discover emulation
>Discover GNU/Linux
>Discover IRC
>All these fucking forums
>All these wonderful places to download shit from, like games and animays

It was great really. It feels as though finding out about Sup Forums was the beginning of the end for me

No, that was 90's internet
Early 2000s everyone had monthly ISP bills

nigga shut up,dialing up boards was the shit for getting my parents pissed and getting my ass kicked

Runescape era was pretty amazing. I played 14h/day, I literally wanted to live inside Runescape's world.

yeah, you're just off by ten years or your family lived in a fucking hole

right...

Yeah, meme sites weren't mainstream then either and so they actually had somewhat decent content
Also, there's something to be said for heavy gradients and 3D-ness. It's timeless in my eyes, flat design is boring

Classic era

Was the Internet of 2007-2008 really that different from from the classic era though? Older memes like All your base and Leeroy Jenkins still coexisted prominently alongside newer memes like Rick Roll and Chocolate Rain. True, iPhones and Windiows Vista came out at the time but nobody used them; it was all about Windows movie maker, Winxp, let the bodies hit the floor, unregistered hyped cam, etc.

If anything 2009/2010 is when I noticed the whole glossy modern social media Internet begin to take hold. Twitter became well known after Michael Jackson died, and YouTube changed their layout from stars to likes. Not coincidentally, this was around when Obama became president.

No, people tend to say 2007 because they saw the shitty Sup Forumseddit ""infographic"" showing all the le terrible things that happened in 2007, ignoring the fact that it took a few years for all of these things to really take root and have a serious affect on the culture of the internet as a whole. 2010 was the real sort of turning point for the internet in relation to the internet of the early-mid 2000s

This, the internet went downhill when facebook killed msn messenger

you wouldn't believe how many blonde chicks with 36d's middle school me cyber sexed with in the AOL dial up era

I used to pretend to be a girl like that in AOL chatrooms and chat up guys, just for fun. It's kind of weird to think that a bunch of grown men were probably jacking off to what I was saying as a kid.
