we had to use this simulated Linux thing via a website that was 90% Java or something
almost every single time I had to do something on there the obvious way and the elegant way wouldn't work, I had to find the specific way it wanted

What shitty college do you go to that uses proprietary software for teaching? I've never had to use proprietary software while at college. Basically everything related to CS has been FOSS for a while. I can only think of dotnet but no reputable university will have dotnet as an obligatory course.
