Unity will be forked. That's pretty much a certainty. Will it ever make it into the family of "official" ubuntu variants? Perhaps. Too much time has been sunk into Unity for it's devs to let it go in the bin. Too many people hate G3 as it is. I'm not really worried about it. I'll run 16.04LTS until 18.04 and then I'll see what is what.
