This thread is about the appreciation of horology, as well as the micro-engineering and materials engineering that are required to make a fine watch, clock, or other timepiece.

Just got off the phone and had a great conversation with Shane. I knew it would be good when he said "Good thing you called, i totally forgot who this watch belonged to". Turns out its (Lord Marvel) done and running very well. Very close to zero in all positions. Says these were the best watches ever made which was nice to hear. Shipping it out tomorrow and i should have it by Monday at the latest I'm sure.
His attitude is so fantastic it's heartwarming honestly. As weird as that sounds.

Reminder about the Rolex penis.
William Mitchell
It's looking really good, you found one in nice condition.
Brody Jackson
Holy shit is that mine? He did a hell of a job on that crystal ! I'm ecstatic with this.
Owen Powell
Yes it is. The Lord Marvel uses an acrylic crystal so it's easy to polish it up real nice. Plus Shane does good work.

I know less than nothing about watches How bad is my watch?
Tyler Sullivan
Fine for a cheap modern quartz.

This is the jewelry thread. They only care about what it looks like and how much it cost.
"Good" in this thread is based on that.
Levi Lewis
Also if its newer they hate that. Being older and rare and thus exclusive (jewelry thread remember) carries a lot of weight around these prancing jewelry obsessed faggots too.
Carson Perez
For the price it's not bad at all.

You mean just like the PC mod and lighting kit threads?
Joshua Russell
That is a Seiko LM Special 5206 or 5216 and they can typically be found on eBay or for a better deal but less buyer protection you can look on Yahoo! Japan Auctions using a proxy bidding service.
They are probably the cheapest vintage watch you can get with a high-grade automatic movement (the Seiko 52xx was Daini Seikosha's ETA 2892-A2 equivalent).
Pic related is another LM Special 5206 of mine.
Carson Jenkins
>his is the jewelry thread. They only care about what it looks like and how much it cost. > >"Good" in this thread is based on that.
You are actually quite wrong. There are a surprising number of semi-regular /wt/ posters with some pretty deep horological knowledge, more than you find in a lot of other popular watch forums which actually tend much more to mindless consumerism with little to no technical understanding of the movements themselves.
Lincoln Perry
I'm really curious how they got the day-of-the-week pusher to work on this thing. I wonder if you could adapt it to make a dive chronograph that you could actually use underwater.
Kayden Sanchez
Whatchu wearin literally right now, /wt/?
Elijah Sanchez
The day of week pusher is safe to use underwater?

I haven't had any problems yet at least. Though if it does rust to a halt I can use the chance to upgrade to the new movement. It is also only rated for skins diving though.

Looks a bit large on your wrist. I recommend trying it on a brown or reddish-brown leather strap. Does that one have the hacking/hand-winding movement?
Jacob Cook
I think the photo might be a little shitty as well as the angle. I have a white face watch as well and the size is also the same. Yes this watch does have the hacking/hand-winding movement.
Camden Hernandez
...
Kayden Young
Perhaps try wearing it to the left of your wrist bone, in that photo it looks large, but it might not higher up. I do like the watch.
Ayden Russell
What would be easier to make precise, quartz digital or quartz analog?
James Ward
Still wearing my penis quartz, I can't get over the dial.
Oliver Campbell
Digital, no moving parts.
Caleb Price
Thanks friendo
Ethan Martin
i can't get over the day date in one spot.. looks cheap as fuck. The dial texture is alright it not really special.
Isaiah Davis
Yeah, I know. some misalignment is expected, considering the age of the watch. I still enjoy it, looks better in person than my shitty phone camera can capture.
Brayden Hill
Yeah, it does. The Seiko 5206/5216/5245/5246/5256 family of movements tends to be pretty reliable.
As with any vintage watch, however, you should do your own research into the model you are interested in until you know enough to judge the originality, desirability and condition of individual examples of that watch for yourself. Such knowledge is the only way to really avoid being ripped off when dealing with vintage watches.
Carter Bell
Excuse my autism, I now realize what you were referring to. I honestly don't mind, I may get a proper day date in the future, but this serves me fine for now.
Easton Green
its not bad looking but for some reason I personally just don't like the giant window with the day and date together on a watch face.
Kayden Sanchez
Overall it does look good on you however. The watch is the perfect size and the dial is rather nice.
Adrian Walker
I wasn't sure if I would like it either when I bought it, but it looks pretty decent in person, to me at least.
Justin Gonzalez
Hard to find nice full day date watches other then Rolex.
Found this while looking for a simple blue quartz for my dad though.
Thomas Allen
Fuck off ninefag
Grayson Davis
you might have success with the ripoff, it's discontinued though. Newer (uglier) version is out with sapphire, hacking and handwinding.
Luke Wilson
There's more options for a full (mechanical) day date than I thought a month ago. Even Seiko made a few.

The real mistake there is using the English day over the Moon day on a vintage weeb Daini Seikosha. The days of the week on my weeb Suwa Seikosha are:
>red square >black wobbly square >cat nose >the weird K >teepee >house >blue upside-down T
Caleb Torres
Suwa Seikosha was always better (besides that one off in 1967, but then rightfully obliterated Daini in 1968 again).
Leo Ross
bullshit rest of the face is already in English, mixing languages always destroys a clean look.
Camden Bailey
I think it's more fun this way, but ok. I think day displays are stupid anyway because you might need to remind yourself what the date is, but your brain must be pretty fried if you can't even remember what day of the week it is.
Noah Ross
Right
Grayson Roberts
Perfect watch for vacation: > Day, no date > One handed, 24 hour dial > Alarm > Moonphase
Owen Morris
you mean fat?
Eli Morales
So I think I know why the brown strap I had looked off. It was extremely matte, whereas the one you had on your German watch had more light play if I remember correctly. I do like how the green one looked on it however.
Joseph Hall
The green definitely looks better in that picture.
Ryder White
Yeah. I have no idea what lighting setup the seller had going on since the brown one looked a lot more glossy. Still really comfy thought. Nice use of the lightbox. The deployant strap thing worked out quite well by the way. I'm tempted to convert one of the original straps to use regular buckles now.
Luis Ward
wut is this
Eli Wilson
The tourbillon or the one I posted? The Romanization of the company name is Vager Hauers, thought they did sell watches under only their Chinese name. They make some interesting watches.
Christian Howard
>Vager Hauers How are these finished and what movement do they use?
Isaac Walker
>Not ascending and liking both the Royal Oak and Nautilus for what they are
Jayden Martinez
The twenty four hour watch uses a miyota 8xxx movement. Finishing is absolutely fine for the price point. The watch is certainly a gimmicky piece, but to be honest one of the better twenty four hour hand concepts I've seen (way better than all those slaved day/night fake moonphase). I'm definitely enjoying it for the 200 or whatever I paid.
There's also a moonphase which Owns, though we haven't seen really good pictures of it due to the potato camera. I believe it uses a seagull movement.
Owen Jones
The watch came on a decent leather deployant, but it was too long a strap for my 6.5in wrist so I switched to a $20 Macy's strap.
Brandon Butler
In person it looks a bit more like a Lange 1 fake than I expected, but still enjoyable to wear.
Camden Myers
And switched.
Jason Watson
The movement is a Miyota 8217 I think. The movement itself just has the default finishing as far as I can tell, but the case back has some cool engraving. The rest of the case is okay, has brushed and polished finish in different places. The dial seems great for the price point though.
The moonphase is great. The disk itself has something like 300+ tiny stars all applied to the disk. I don't know how the dial is made, if it is porcelain or just ungodly high DPI printing, but it looks snazzy. There are also porcelain teapots in some of the promotional material but I don't read Chinese. Also has pointing date, and powered by a seagull 2108 if memory serves.
