Does anyone actually use Wayland?

post your $ echo $XDG_SESSION_TYPE

Pic unrelated

echo $XDG_SESSION_TYPE

does it look different?

systemd-waylandd

I keep watching /r/archlinux every X months and see if its usable or not

>10 years until its ready

yeah works great with sway under Ubuntu core

x11

I tried Fedora's Hawaii spin on a disposable machine. First it wouldn't even recognize a keyboard or mouse because of a missing dependency and then only Openbox worked. I don't know if Wayland was ever working or not.

yes
sway was crappy /maybe will be better later/
weston works but is a limited wm although has nice animations and transitions
gnome is comfy

I've been using wayland for the past 1.5 year.
However as a result I'm stuck with gnome.

I'm using GNOME on Wayland in fedora 26. It's nice because it gets rid of the massive amounts of tearing I always got on X (even with xorg config files edited with vsync and tear free options).

????

I wanted to use wayland and sway on my lenovo miix but sadly there is no way to rotate the screen so I'm stuck with X. wayland is another project that is just taking features away and the only way to have them back is to use GNOME

No because as soon as I open up a Youtube video or start playing Oldschool Runescape my entire session starts to spaz the fuck out. Most screenshot software besides GNOME's just flat out don't work (at least when I was on Fedora 25). Fedora were idiots to think that Wayland was ready to ship.

Why should I use Wayland instead of X?

>tfw no openbox-wayland

I do.
No. It's a different backend for all the same libraries like GTK, QT or SDL.

The main problem is that beyond sway and gnome, there doesn't seem to be much support from DEs/WMs. And every time I try sway it feels a little buggy compared to i3 (which it's more or less trying to imitate perfectly)

Ubuntu devs have been chattering about the possibility of 17:10 having wayland by default now that it's going to be gnome based.

Kind of a shame really, they could have been pushing for and developing wayland since 2011 if they didn't go full retard with their Mir ambitions

You won't notice a change. Distros and DEs just switch to Wayland because it gets rid of a lot of X cruft.

Manjaro looks so goddamn tasty

Only by accident. I either realize I'm in a Wayland session by how smooth everything is or up until something doesn't work right, then I regrettably boot into X.

GNOME feels fluid as fuck. Just boot into Fedora 26 and you'll notice it.
