I'm on the fence about spending $3k for this already.
Convince why I shouldn't update my 13" 2013 air for a 15" pro.
Bonus points: show me a better and cheaper alternative.

I would suggest a 2015 or 2016 Macbook Pro. Has all the important specs, maybe even an actual HDMI port, no lame strip, and pre-Sierra.

if you're doing real work on it (or playing gaymes i guess) then go for the pro.

if it's a web browsing machine then get a cheaper macbook or macbook air.

Buy a nice refurbished thinkpad for 200$.

a gaymin pc with peripherals for 1500$

If you're in the market for a Mac, you're probably not the type of person who cares about replacing your own parts anyways. On that topic, Apple Care is amazing. Send it in, let them deal with the hassle, and get it back in less than a week. It's about the same wait you'd have ordering parts online anyways.

Get a 2015 MacBook Pro, it has actually useable ports and costs under $1000 now for a refurbished one.
Unless you really think you're going to keep the same laptop for the 5-6 more years it will take for USB C and Thunderbolt 3 to be ubiquitous.

Thanks for all the responses. I mainly use it for remote administration and some light dev work associated with my job. Anything better then the air I currently have is overkill but the display on the pro is just incredible.
I almost picked it up yesterday but got sticker shock. All the windows machines were 1/2 the price but the build quality isn't the same.

If OP is considering buying a Mac in the first place, it's because of the OS, which I assume includes running popular proprietary programs. A GNU/Linux distro almost certainly won't be acceptable. Maybe Windows could however.
