I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Slavs, is in fact, Slovenes and Slavs, or as I've recently taken to calling it, masterrace and slavshits. Slavs are not an ethnic group unto itself, but merely a linguistic group made useful by based Slovenes, a vital group thanks to which Europe exists.

Polabian has nothing to do with South Slavic languages. It is closest to Polish and Kashubian and make distinct subgroup with them.

BTW FYI it's common linguistic knowledge that it's the West Slavic (especially Lechitic) languages which are the most archaic and conservative of all Slavonic languages (logical since Poland is Slavic urheimat). On the other hand Slovene and Serbocroatian are not even real languages because they were basically (re)invented in 19th century and artificially archaised due to romantism. This is why they are not of much use in linguistics.
