I installed it yesterday and it seems really great, not so much for file sharing but for the communication features like distributed forums and email.
Seems pretty simple to install and use.
I wanted to post my ID here but apparently this board thinks its spam even when I replace all slashes with other signs. Anyone knows what triggers the spamfilter here? I posted my ID just fine on Sup Forums
So have ha picture of my key, maybe OCR can import it easily. ALternatively I post it on volafile or embedd it in a picture, but both seems a bit retarded.
Come to think of it, I recall having the same problem with IPFS hashes a while ago.
They also have the decoding functionality and the site seems reasonably trustworthy.
Hope it works this time
Henry Gutierrez
I looked into alternate internet stuff a few years ago and also right retroshare looked like the best secure useable platform. As well as maybe gnunet. I don't use it though because I have no friends.
Jayden Thompson
Sup Forums is much slower than Sup Forums opie
Ethan Gray
well, looksl like im your new best friend. I posted my ID in another thread (which does not have a retarded spamfilter like Sup Forums): Also I too tried out GNUnet and found it unbearably slow.
yeah but this thread had been past page 5 twice already. figured there would be more interest.
If anyone cares, I got about 80k files in my folders. Mostly ebooks. But a few movies and series too. On BitTorrent I can usually do upload rates of several MB/s so speed should not be a problem I think
never saw them. They were popular?
Then again I only rarely visit Sup Forums nowadays.
So how is this different from zeronet and freenet?
Julian Perez
intredasting is there a for-dummies-tutorial how to set up shares and such? can people using this see your ip and such?
Daniel White
why poorfag not add me
suck my dick
Christian Perry
Idk, did not think about it. Never used it to post anything until now, only to read stuff
done
idk about zeronet but compared to freenet it actually works, and it has forum, email and chat functions built in.
its really just two clicks. Go to "Files" and add folders.
I added you
Nathan Rodriguez
>its really just two clicks. Go to "Files" and add folders. so no ssl-certificate whatevers or port openingers or such like with secure ftp?
Connor Peterson
not if your router supports Upnp But that is unrelated to filesharing anyway, thats something you do when you set up RS as a whole
Evan Reyes
Make QR code with your ID and post it.
Cameron Barnes
thought about it but now with pastebin it seems overly complicated
Aaron Hughes
How safe and secure retro share?
Julian Campbell
100% safe and secure. Its Web of Trust based, you decide whose certificate you sign and everything is encrypted using strong cryptography.
Also message boards and emails are distributed so they cannot be taken down. In fact RS does not use any servers, everything is done from node to node. And it has been developed for many years now, no chance of it suddenly dissapearing
Alexander Flores
how can i add you
you cant post your key
god dammmmmmmmmm
Nathaniel Martin
I'm asking because during the nyaa incident, it was suggested, so is it feasible to be used as such?
Robert Kelly
I did post it and link to it. I will put it on pastebin:
yeah pretty much. The message board functions plus the file sharing function would work well. Message board alone would work already since you can attach files (like torrents) to the posts and search them
Josiah Peterson
Is it possible to use it to host sites?
Ryder Torres
well you "host" message boards, chatrooms and channels (something like facebook walls/twitter) but its inherently distributed so its you and whoever else that cares about that hosts the content.
Parker Lewis
Why isn't this not popular?
Cameron Russell
So since it's distributed it reveals you ip = your name and dress for law enforcement
Not very secure, about as secure as public torrents then.
William Davis
Why do I feel like retroshare is CP fertile ground.
Angel Nguyen
It's private but not anonymous. Honeypots are WAY too easy to set up.
Adrian King
Then it's not suitable to share weeb cartoon.
Leo Thompson
It's secure, not private. Fucking retard
Asher Morgan
I have no idea. But even I who likes to stay on top of news developments in computer science and related topics, particularly encryption and privacy related, have only started it yesterday.
To be honest I have heard the name "retroshare" many times in the past. But it sounded like a Rapidshare knowckoff. Always thought it was either that or just another file sharing program.
Well it is the latter of course, but so much more.
No. To reveal anything to law enforcement you would have to manually add them to your contacts
well you can always distrust nodes that host this crap. But since it does not have the strong anonymizing features of TOR (well it can use Tor but not directly built in) the risk for anyone peddling CP is much much higher.
yes it is. nyaa had way less safety for example and still everyone used it and nothing happened. If you are super paranoid you can always share the magnet links instead of the actual torrents, that way you are 100% safe.
see pic. People have no problem sharing music on the channels for example
it is _reasonably_ private
Brody Johnson
>All those russian channels What do you mean by "reasonably" private?
Jayden Allen
yeah those are funny
>What do you mean by "reasonably" private? Thats pretty much self-explanatory. You decide with whom you connect and who you trust. Thats pretty private. Also no servers or other central instances where spies could harm you.
Oliver Taylor
All these stupid fags adding random anons. Enjoy getting v& retards.
Cooper Gray
Soulseek is better
Easton Walker
So what's stopping people from posting illegal stuff?
Julian Jenkins
the human will to do the right thing (aka nothing whatsoever)
Ryan Evans
Because it's not anonymous you can get tracked.
Zachary Martin
yeah im sure that the police has nothing better to do than pose as user on RS and arrest people (from all over the world) for the crime of adding them.
This makes perfect sense.
Does it also have distributed message boards and email?
The WoT. Besides you do not really "post" illegal stuff to a server or anything. You have stuff on your node (can be files, message boards, emails, threads, channels...) and others can take it whereupon its on their node too.
Illegal stuff will not be hosted at all or at least not very often. Nodes hosting illegal stuff can be downvoted by signature. Good nodes become well reputed and better connected, bad nodes wither away.
basically this. Not doing anything = content stays on only one single node
only if you add the tracking node to your friends. Sof for all intends and purposes: no, not because of tracking.
Angel Brooks
last bump before I go shopping
Andrew Taylor
Child pornography is a global offense and these kinds of secret/private groups (esp. from Sup Forums) are used to distribute it.
Carson Hughes
yeah no. Its all done over tor and onion sites today.
And as I explained: its easy to stop it from spreading on Retroshare
Xavier Price
>compared to freenet it actually works, How does Freenet not work?
just download the publicly viewable source and compile it yourself then.
Jack Thomas
>too complex to explain in 2000 characters blah blah Did you miss the "not" in my post?
Christian Baker
actually I did. whoops.
Freenet is ultra-slow. Pre-5.6kb slow.
Aiden Ramirez
no one interested in RS anymore?
Matthew Murphy
show me the code baby
Jason Lopez
Don't feel like reading through their docs so maybe someone can spoonfeed me and answer my questions.
If I wanted to download something from somebody can they see my IP address? Can I see theirs? If a group of users has downloaded what I want to download, do they assist in the downloading process (seeding)? What does my isp see when I am downloading things? Is it safe to use it without a vpn?
