mpv, after a long time of mplayer in the past.

Also switched to mpv on the less used Windows HTPC and other secondary machines, mostly because it's actually overall marginally faster than vlc.

Plex, since all my media is there.

MPC, shit is fucking awesome. Fuck MPV.

MPV

I was using using VLC 2 or 3 years ago but it pretty much broke with some version for my intended usage.

I usually stream my recordings (from a Dreambox 8000) to my Mac so I can watch it in a small window (always on top) while still working so I don't have to use the TV all the time (by now I use the TV just for gaming).

There's software for this (streaming from a Dreambox to the computer) but the Mac Software to do this is crap, so I made a little script that just builds a playlist of my recordings (or the TV bouquet) that I can use with VLC. But with some VLC version the streaming over my local network broke somehow. When I paused the recording and resumed audio and video were out of sync using VLC. So I pretty much gave up on VLC.

I changed the script to output a Zenity option list, that I could use with FFmpeg's FFPlay and now MPV in combination with... well Zenity. Not only does this work better then the problematic and IMO pretty much broken VLC, it's even a much more lightweight solution.

The only problem I encountered was that not only MPV but the whole system sometimes crashed hard when using the hardware accelerated decoding. Somehow MPV caused a fatal crash of some processes associated with Apples acceleration solution "MediaToolbox" for some reason. Well, software decoding works too and isn't too demanding anyway.

MPC-HC on wangblows
