I ponder about this a lot and I think the root cause is the media + the political system, esp. in America. Media gives politicians exposure all day every day and politicians always pretend their view is right, the others are dead wrong. There's no middle ground. Show this to people for years and they start to think this is how you win arguments.
To make the world a better place, schools would need to start teaching kids how real debates work and how to spot arguments vs. logical fallacies. But that would take decades to show effect.

However, the actual data clearly showed that foreigners were commiting waaaaaay more crime than nationals and you had to read the article very closely to see they were quoting an official at an unrelated press conference that happend months/years earlier. The whole thing was purposely misleading.
