because pretty much everyone agreed that sans fonts were way more aesthetic, and suited better for digital content. Considering the only differentiating factor between I and l is serifs, you're expected to know which is which.
I also like Sans fonts.
But this is one major glaring issue with Sans fonts I wish they'd fix.

It's not aesthetics.
They did tests.
With medium and large sized on-screen fonts most people can sans faster.
With small on-screen fonts most people can read serif faster.
I think in print most people always read serif faster though (no idea why that would be).
