I always preferred the horizontal configuration, I'm guessing it might have been due to the limited options for adding optical drives but I don't know.

They're called "laptops" now.

Bigger screen means no more space below.

Desks got smaller.

Also CRT monitors fell out of use.

Cringy name ?????

Probably because monitors got larger than the towers themselves
Nice name, don't forget to link your Facebook Account next time

They didn't, still very common, especially with the prevalence of slim optical drives

Those are "desktops" aka "pizza boxes". Instead of the now being used, "towers".
How underage are you?

i have 2 widescreen monitors, so a horizontal case wouldn't be no way practical

They require display on a desk while towers can be hidden where a filing cabinet used to go, so they're bad for normies, and they have limited drive bay space and can't incorporate convection in their cooling, so they're also bad for autists. Their time in the sun was when screens were heavy and small and chinkplastic was brittle so you needed SOMETHING to hold it up to eye level, but now everything has an adjustable stand.

Buy a 2U case and take the rackmount ears off of it

30, I've never heard "pizza box" used. Pretty retarded name desu since the only difference between a regular horizontal box and a pizza box is the fact that it can open topwise, which these PCs don't do.

>horizontal "towers"

Jesus christ

I refuse to believe you made it to 30 without walking into traffic

>Use of quotes to purposely denote it was being used incorrectly as I am unsure of the normal name
>Effective enough so people still know to what in the photo is being referred
>Autists still mad

They never went anywhere, OP, they're just boring enterprise gear.

>desu
option discarded

>which these PCs don't do.
Hard to believe you're 30.

They lacked space for all the shit we were installing in our pcs.

Can you go more than 2 minutes without spewing "cringe cringe" at everything you see? You're like a Sup Forumstard spewing "cuck cuck".

Who take these photos?

They're still available as HTPC cases. Next computer I build will most likely use a horizontal case.

Only time I've heard horizontal cases be referred to as "pizza boxes" was Apple's slimline horizontal cases from the 90s.

Pizza boxes are only the very short, flat, square ones, basically 1u rackmount cases without the hardware. The generic term for the desktop type is, surprise, "desktop".

Why did laptops and desktops die?

Smartphones tablets and touchsreen aios

Horizontal towers dated back to the original office PC's of the 70s n shit just a outdated package

The entire pc industry is based on poor design. Whether you are talking about mass produced enterprise machines or enthusiast gaming ones, the majority of hardware is hideous.

bigger screens meant you have to look way up if it's sitting on top of something

>towers can be hidden where a filing cabinet

why would you lock you're desktop up in a cabinet? it's like you want you're computer to die of heat exhaustion.

>horizontal "towers"

That's a new one to me, and hilarious.

I've heard the term pizza box used in IT circles but only in reference to desktops (mostly dells) with hinged shells that literally open up like pizza boxes. It was generally regarded as a stupid term though.

...

>supposed to be a desktop
>literally every writing is horizontal, suggesting tower

They don't seem to be sure about this

Cabinets are generally okay to dissipate a couple hundred watts of thermal energy, so unless you're rocking theme lighting and a video card the size of a shoebox you'd never notice with an office computer doing often tasks.

And most desks are constructed with a 4-sided box with open front and back there rather than a 5-sided opening cabinet or 6-sided adapted drawer, so if anything it's actually beneficial to cooling, preserving all the front/back airflow while aiding the case's function as a huge but low-TD heatsink.

What a waste of quints.

It has rubber feet on both the narrow and wide sides, and the side/top panel is reinforced to support a monitor. Options are good.

Dude looks like Mr. Regular.

If one was to desire a modern horizontal case, how would one know that the case would support a monitor well? Is a cross bar on the frame heading from front to back necessary?

That depends on whether you plan to stick a 5lb LCD panel on top of it, or a 90lb CRT.

>Why did horizontal "towers" die- 36 posts and 4 image replies shown.
Who the fuck wants fans and sources of heat right infront of them!??!
It also reduces the space on your desk.

keeping your computer on your desk is the most retarded thing ever.

An LCD. I'm wondering because this case doesn't have one , but a Lian Li case designed for the purpose does. I guess playing it safe and getting a used case might be the best bet.

Better than on the floor where they suck the dust out of your carpet.

>Better than on the floor where they suck the dust out of your carpet.
No it isn't. Just elevate it 6 inches and it's fine. Also, put filters in front of fans and vacuum your floors once a week.
No dust!
And no noisy/hot things on your desk.

>just get a stand that the computer can fall off of, add filters that can't be easily cleaned, and vacuum more often than needed rather than lose a small bit of desk space
Also, my next build is very likely going to be relatively low powered as I still haven't found an an actual reason to upgrade from my 8 1/2 year old machine and will likely only build a new machine when my current one experiences major parts failures.

you're a moron. that is all.

I'm probably just retarded but I've commented before and watched that fucking word show up on its own.

It's an automatic wordfilter for words that don't mean anything like "t b h", "f a m", etc

my horizontal tower works just fine

Got it. Retardation confirmed.

wow user is that an IBM PC

yes user it is, nice dubs btw

Kek

They're a waste of space in the flat panel era.

That's not what a pizza box is you underage dipshit

They are still here.
But full towers took over to support larger GPU's

Small horizontal cases and small GTX cards are still avalable

what kind of cool algorithms have you coded with it?

Nothing died. You can make what you want. My machine is in a beige 3u rackmount case with a tv on top.

Think pizza box term comes from sun sparcstation.

I agree

Apple takes advantage of this though and sells on style

i want pizza

i imagine it's because their advantage disappeared along with crt's
with a crt, a desktop case can sit under it, and use no/little more space behind the display, that is, the desk footprint is about the same as just the crt itself
but with an lcd/other flatpanel, the depth of a desktop becomes wasted space

i've generally only seen it used on 'half-height' desktops
that is, only tall enough for one 5.25" bay rather than two
i'm not sure if it was ever anything "official", though

This.
It is hugely wasteful.

Monitor with tower behind can work well for generic workstations since they are rarely if ever accessed by people plugging shit in. (because most generic workers are retards that plug in shit they found on the ground and take out fucking nuclear reactors and health services)

Even if you take it out of that setting, sitting it back there is still fine because a normal person would use a USB hub for most generic hardware and only use the on-tower ports for permanent stuff or high-bandwidth requiring needs.
Mind you, the latter scenario isn't as huge these days since bandwidth is through the roof on USB3.
Gone are the days where you need to fight for bandwidth over your USB Hub because your USB Camera was eating 70% of it and nothing else can get a word in.

My college using these fucking things vertically. Every time I put disks in, they fall out onto the floor at least once.

I'm beyond mad, because every day this happens, my teacher says "Just use OneDrive, physical media is outdated." Even my parents call me a faggot and disown me for using disks.

I'm literally crying right now.

What OS did the pc-88 line run?

I know, I meant "and" not "aka".

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pizza_box_form_factor

Why so tense? Did I tickle your autism?

power mos

>literally crying

I hope you are being deliberately provocative.

Usb trumps all. Ditch the CDs. Don't use the cloud it is always under threat of data leaks.

the real reason is because of airflow
when you lay the case down almost half of the surface area becomes blocked off or at least inhibited if you have riser feet
while vertical that amount is much less
I know because I made a new build recently and my gpu overheats when it's horizontal

Poor cooling options and difficult to fit larger modern psu

they do pseudo laptops now

Can you do spreadsheet and word processing on it?

This guy's name literally says "I love you Sawako" I was like ok who TF is Sawako and after researching I found out that it's the name of a Chinese cartoon character, don't tell me it's not cringy.

>Horizontal "towers"
Oh Jesus, fuck this gay earth

More like this?

you do realize that's what those machines were primarily made to do, right?

mate i am using one right now, it's a think center with linux installed, it was a piece of shit but once i added a few things and put a different OS, it is my main machine

Half the PCs here at work are small form factor that lie flat. We only use big towers for developer rigs that run xeons and quadros

horizontal towers died like a decade before CRTs did

The Dell logo literally rotates

wrong

> I was like ok who TF is Sawako and after researching I found out that it's the name of a Chinese cartoon character, don't tell me it's not cringy.
Are you that fucker who posts in desktop threads, pretending to be a ""girl""?

not wrong, the most common options for desktops were towers around the time when non-crts were a luxury item and had shit resolution

Tbh senpai

Does my case count as horizontal tower?

>This article needs additional citations for verification.

took 2 hours to figure out how to open "oh hidden push leavers under the logo well then"

reminds of how i had a lot of difficultly opening my dell dx110 at first, only to realize the mystery button on the front pops open the side

gx110*

Vertical towers take up less space on your desk.

Former IT fag here. Optiplexes are some of the best computers I've ever used. They're super reliable and can take a lot of abuse over many years.

Just use a flash drive, bruh. At my uni, everyone used flash drives. Hardly anyone used Google Drive outside of giving Powerpoint presentations. (And, even then, it was frowned upon in favor of desktop Powerpoint/Libreoffice.)

Because people are using Laptops, Tablets, AIOs and VESA mounted PCs now. Only gamers/workstation users still use full tower cases these days.

That fucking manchild outfit

It's been called "pizza box" since, well, forever.

>only to realize the mystery button on the front pops open the side
T-that's not the turbo button?

heh, no, this machine is (was) too new for such a thing
it had a P3-667

Fractal design node 202. Temps in horizontal are shit though if you dont make any space below for GPU intake.

Also cryorig taku incoming.

Convection has zero noticeable effect on pc cooling.

>Wasting that PC-88 on blurry, sample and hold 'display'

>be me
>wear shit like this
>actually don't understand how to dress like an adult
>feel autistic
>remember I'm an engineer
>"lol im just a wacky engineer I don't have no fashion sense"
>feel a little more autistic but okay with it

The quick rundown:
t-shirts is an undershirt or a sweat absorbent shirt to wear during a run or something.
Not appropriate for work.
Same deal with shorts, fine if you are out for a run, but very unprofessional to wear at work.

If it is very hot where you work, you can skip the undershirt or wear a short sleeved shirt.

>user actually dresses up like he's going to work whenever he uses his computer at home

When evening has come, I return to my house and go into my study. At the door I take off my clothes of the day, covered with mud and mire, and I put on my regal and courtly garments; and decently reclothed, I enter the ancient courts of ancient men, where, received by them lovingly, I feed on the food that alone is mine and that I was born for. There I am not ashamed to speak with them and to ask them the reason for their actions; and they in their humanity reply to me. And for the space of four hours I feel no boredom, I forget every pain, I do not fear poverty, death does not frighten me. I deliver myself entirely to them.
