>American "democracy"
American "democracy"
We're a republic.
But yeah its shit.
How did he win with less of the votes?
>Electoral system specifically designed to make sure the more populous states can't completely outvote those less so
>HURR AMERICAN DEMOCRACY DOESN'T WORK
Dumb hueposter
tl;dr, the states elect the president, not the people
Presidents aren't elected by a popular vote in the US
The opinion of smaller states is just as important to consider as that of larger states. Complete democracy is tyranny of the majority. Before this federalist and globalist movement, it was understood that the states should not be bullied. Unfortunately know, it appears the rights of the states are considered okay to overlook
meh, looking at that map it doesn't look like Gore had a representative victory imo
no one cares if the entirety of NYC turns out to vote Democrat, they're still one little shithole
We're not a direct democracy. We're a representative republic.
The president is elected by the state governments, not the popular vote. 99% of the time, the state government votes and the popular votes coincide, but that was an example of a time when they did not coincide.
Actually, he's right. We're a republic. Many of the men who wrote our constitution were horrified by the idea that uneducated non-landowners would have undue influence over the government, so we don't practice direct democracy at the federal level.
That's what the British poster was saying...
Thank god at least some of that is still around. The 17th amendment was a mistake
I bet Al Gore won by a landslide in NY and California and the rest was close.
It's a decent system so people don't just campaign in big cities and enact policies for them.
They still do it anyways, only its campaigning for the rich and ignoring the poor.
>land of the free
You don't elect your head of state or head of government.
also gerrymandering, chicanos would seriously fuck the southwest in a direct democracy
democracy was a mistake
You're mom was a mistake, and vicariously you were a mistake. Hows that for german efficiency?
funny and original
It's a method to preserve Federalism and some degree of state sovereignty
The concept behind it is that, the popular vote winners of the state basically become who the state "nominates" for the federal office of president
Each state ha at least 3 electoral votes (all states have 2 Senators, and at least one House Representative)
Larger states have more votes because they have more house seats (House of Representatives is proportional to the national population, with each state having at least one seat. All states have 2 Senators each. The idea is the house reflects the nation as a hole, and in the senate it reflects each state with equal footing. it's a compromise between a unitary national system and a confederal system.)
So each state gives all of it's electoral vote to the electoral college, each state nominating the winner of their popular vote in winner-take-all style (except the small states of Nebraska and Maine, where the popular vote winner wins both Senate votes and then each house district votes for the winner of their district)
It's very rare that the winner of the popular vote does not win the electoral vote. When it happens, it's usually a close margin - like the 0.5% margin in 2000.
It's hard for foreigners to understand, but it's a fair system in a large country like ours that is so regional and had to deal with differing paradigms between a unitary or confederal government early in our history, creating American Federalism.
>support clinton's gun control thereby losing your home fucking state
Oh say cunt you see?
>"assault" weapons ban
This, Al Gore fucked himself in the ass. He has no one to blame but himself for losing that election.
