I regret trying to learn Japanese.

5 years ago I started learning Japanese after a trip to Tokyo. I didn't study every day but I put into it enough hours to have learned another European language fluently in that time frame.

Since then I've met and talked to many Japanese people and discovered I hate their fake personalities and their shitty prison like culture. I've become able to read short articles and some manga in Japanese, I recognize a lot of the dialogue in Japanese tv drama. But that reward is small compared to the effort I put in.

I don't enjoy anime and manga anymore, I can't stand j-drama anymore and I have no intention of spending time in Japan except for the occasional summer holidays. Japanese people make Nordic autists seem socially adap, and their general autistic behavior is probably the biggest reason I dropped learning more japanese.

All that time spent on learning Japanese I could have spent learning a language spoken by less socially awkward people such as Spanish or French. Or I could have spent that time learning a worthwhile skill such as programming.

Don't make the same mistake as I did. If you intend to learn Japanese remember you will learn a language you rarely will use after your interest in anime and manga fades off. A language of some of the most socially inept people outside of Finland and Russia. It's not worth it. Your time is limited and valuable, use it on something worthwhile.

I was infatuated at first. But I grew more and more frustrated by how two-faced japanese people are and how strict they're about everything.

I'met a lot of people from South-America in the same time-frame and the contrast between latinos who can talk and joke about anything and Japanese who take everything so seriously and can't express their emotions like the autists they are really highlighted how fucked up Japanese culture is.

The thing Japanese people found weirdest about North America culture was how relaxed we are about a lot of things and in general have a culture of letting things slide so long as the bottom line is maintained and shit gets done. In Japan how you behave and what your personal lifestyle is like is as important to your work reputation as your actual skill in doing your job.

French has just as much entertainment available. If you consider talking to people an entertainment (I do) then Spanish offers just as much. Plus I enjoy watching football and the best teams are Spanish. Latino talk shows are quite cool as well.

I've seen so many foreigners staying in Japan who have no intention to learn or understand the Japanese language and culture.
I agree it's quite weird to them and some things are hard to understand, but that kinda stance never helps.
It's true that Japanese pretty much always see a foreigner just as "gaijin", but those foreigners just give up trying to integrate, and make no efforts.

Dont wanna live in Japan ever but I think I can give some insight.
For us Whites its usually the others tha have to integrate and adapt to us.
I mean the world grew adapting to us, its thus hard for us to be on the other site for once.
Japan is one of the rare places where the natives dont have to hug up to us due to our money.
If I moved to Chile or an African country like France I wouldnt even think of adjusting to their culture, its shit and I have no reason to, I can life fine there even without.
In Japan I couldnt, I would have to work there and in order to do so I need to adapt.

Nah. Japanese is more accessible to english speakers (and overall people familiar with most european languages) because it has some form of phonetic ties with its writing systems. Chinese on the other hands has not only a complete disconnection between written language and phonetics but is also tonal, something that no european language is, making it much harder to learn.

Thank fuck I learned to play an instrument instead. I was at a crossroad in my life where I would either become a full weeb and learn Japanese, waste a shitton of my time playing and "speed running" videogames/getting good at bullethell or rhythm games or I could spend that time learning an instrument. Now I can socialize with people through music and I have learned a skill that is socially acceptable.
