Wasn't really unusual for the time, though. Everyone was using mercenaries. Since professional armies were much smaller back then and could get decimated quickly either by disease or warfare, hiring the closest thing to career soldiers was a pretty good idea for those who didn't want to March back home just yet. And hiring locals was just convenient. It was also easier than sending for troops from back home. I mean, when high command was down around Mainz it would take fucking forever to get new troops conscripted, equipped, and shipped from Scandiland. And they'd likely be worse soldiers than the mercs anyway.
