Some important social things are still running right now, and technology is doing nothing:
Men will work and make sacrifices to help others (female, childrens, old ppl, cats, dogs, minorities, freedom....).

I could generate an infinite amount of theories like this, the truth is such horrible things already happened and will again (where are all the ancient civilisation ?) but we're unable to predict such things.

Apart from the basic needs, I don't see how something can really matter.
Pursuing some fancy ass objectives is important but really if you ever take a look at how money relate to happiness you would see that financial success is not needed (you always want more money for more things, it's like a never-ending game).
Social success, on the other side, really depends on what kind of a person you are.
The only other fundamental (and thus basic) need that matters to me is personal development, to find the things you like and how to spend your non-wageslave free time till you die without feeling bored or useless.
And when you die nothing really matters anymore and all the things that used to have meaning becomes futile.
