Oh, I know what you mean. That's true for all languages I guess. Textbooks are only useful up to a certain point - you have to converse with natives in order to pick up slang and natural expressions.

I think "污染是中国的一个很大的缺点" (pollution is one of China's big disadvantages) is more accurate. 厉害 means "powerful" in a positive way- so it's weird to say "pollution is a powerful question".
