I'd never leave my state, but I did learn a lot of Polish because of someone. I can read, write and understand about half of spoken Polish, along with few other Slavic languages (Russian/Ukrainian).

I believe living in a monolingual society cripples the average verbal IQ. Jews and Singaporeans are generally trilingual, and not surprisingly, both having the highest verbal IQ. I believe RS is also predominantly trilingual (Portuguese/Spanish/English), with a fair share of people who also speak the "muh heritage" languages that are taught in some schools like Nedersaksisch/Hunsrückisch, Polish, Italian, etc., which is neat.
