there's also a drm stripping plugin for calibre, if you intend to purchase books in the future and want to read it on other devices.
It's an e-reader. Get one with an e-ink screen if you want to read books. Buy a Paperwhite.
Yes. Torrents of NYT bestseller list bullshit are all over the web, but since Kindles can read multiple formats it's not hard to find just about anything.
Get one without special offers unless you like looking at ads like a cuck. 3G is a meme, wifi is everywhere.
If you do get one I hope you enjoy it. Don't forget a decent case for traveling.
get Kobo. much better.
pedo
Libgen.io is the best source from books. Dont waste your time on torrents
Don't support DRM, ever.
Don't buy devices that promote the use of DRM.
Don't buy DRM protected content.
Don't sign up for services protected by DRM.
Even by using this device for pirating you are enabling the spread of DRM in our daily lives. Don't do this.
this is actually a great site, I've seen a lot of Russian books there as well
I'm really unaware of this product line and since it's coming from Amazon, doesn't it have some type of ad service or something related to that?
I bet you're using a smartphone.
Actually I do.
In my defense, I have no DRM capabilities in my phone. Even if it did have, my phone wouldn't be using it because I don't buy a phone for viewing DRM protected content. A Kindle's sole purpose is, however.
How are smartphones in general comparable? You aren't even forced to use the Android distribution it shipped with on most.
This.
Flash a custom ROM and all DRM capabilities are removed and that's a good thing.
>bootloader closed
>blobs makes hard to use new roms
android is a proprietary laden shit ready blow up any time.
Get a Kobo
>android is a proprietary laden shit ready blow up any time.
Nope. Android is an open source project. The situation you are describing only applies to some models of some manufacturers that you should avoid like the plague.
The fact that a decent FOSS operating system exists unfortunately doesn't mean some manufacturers make consumer unfriendly decisions.
Yes and yes. Libgen, #bookz, Calibre to convert, keep it in airplane mode if you get one with the ads
Try convincing me into jailbreaking my kindle. Pros and cons pls
Kobo. You can just throw whatever the hell you want on it with adobe digital editions. Easier than fucking around jailbreaking a kindle.
>kindle
>jailbreak
what, why?
Several years back I got myself the original Nook, not backlit.
Best purchase ever, for 100 dollars i have access to every single book I want. No need to jailbreak.
Buy an e-reader, for sure, just make sure it is not a Kindle.
Why do you need to jailbreak a kindle ? I have several torrented books on mine but ive never messed around with the software.
The only actually cool reason is the change the screensavers
Anyone got that infograph about getting the best out of your e-reader?
What e-reader to get?
Kobo, Nook or kindle?
I need to study and several books for board certification exam, most of the books are in PDF format though.
I thought about getting a tablet but but I think an e-reader would be much sturdier.
ereaders aren't useful unless you already read
Got a Kindle, read half a book. Never used it again. 10/10
kek
Why are E-Readers still a thing?
You an get better price/performance from a tablet.
>inb4 battery life
This is 2017, there's power outlet nearly everywhere.
Unless you want to take it with you when you hike or camp, or want to read after a catastrophe hit your place.
I have a few years old galaxy tab pro 8.4 (1440, 8 in screen)
Except for the shitty battery life (2.5h regular use, maybe 5+ if reading), it's breddy gud.
Is it even worth it to get an "e-ink" reader like a kobo over the tablet I already have?
Some people just want to read books, not play Angry Birds.
>What is eye strain for 1100$, Alex?
>What's self-control?
Honestly I think that's just a myth to sell e-readers.
Light is still light, also you can dim the light on tablet, and AMOLED black pixels are actually non lit pixels.
Noone cares about shitty battery lifes, the real reason is the screen. E-ink is clearly superior to tablet screens when used for reading.
maybe dont share your opinion if you've never actually used an e-reader.
Indeed, most things you pirate will be in .epub format which is native on the Kobos but needs to be converted to for the Kindles (not a big deal, but introduces something to mess the formatting up).
re: getting books, there are torrents, but I mostly use #bookz on Undernet. see: /lit/ for details
>using the "it's ${CURRENT_YEAR}" argument
(You)
you don't need to jailbreak it
just use calibre to remove DRM and to convert books to .mobi
also use libgen or b-OK
For PDFs the larger the better. The only reasonably priced large high-DPI reader is the Kobo One (there's the giant Sony one that's like $1000 is money is absolutely no object)
>getting the best out of your e-reader
The first step would be to start reading literature instead of picture books for children and mentally deficient adults.
>libgen
>Not bibliotik.me
loling at you are life
I've used e-reader before.
It's somewhere in a drawer collecting mites.
I'm using Nexus7 tablet to read with and it's perfect.
It could be because I was using a very old e-reader, it's pic related.
He said the best source of books, not cooking and travel guides, pajeet.
>Kobo One
It's about 250$, I can get a better tablet with that price.
>high-DPI
How important that is? while there are some pictures in those PDFs I don't really need to see it in very high quality.
Or I'm misunderstanding something?
>start reading literature instead of picture books for children
If you don't live in the US you can just buy the "Special offers" one, and Amazon will remove them for free. Worked for me with several kindles.
They've come a long way in terms of contrast and resolution, and all have touch screens and frontlights now.
Really *high DPI* isn't that important, but moreso for PDFs.
Amazon used to make a large ereader back in the day, but my modern standards it's shit every way, so that's what I had in mind by contrast.
I see, what specs do I need to look for then? I mean for the DPI.
Obviously the higher the better. As said makes the most difference for graphics/charts, so if you'll be reading a lot of text books and manuals that's what you want.
Is there a minimum DPI?
The current crop of readers from Kindle and Kobo all go from very high to absurdly high DPI, so if you're buying one of those don't worry about it.
It's only devices from 3+ years ago that had screens where you could see pixels and resolution might be an issue.
...and fyi, all the current Kindle readers are 6" and are 300dpi (not sure if they're all the same panels or what).
On the Kobo side there's a lot more variety, panels between 250 and 300dpi iirc, and readers in 6", 6.8", and 7.8" (they used to have a tiny one, think it was called the Pocket, but that had a pretty low-rez screen and was more of a novelty).
Kindle
>botnet
>locked down
>cheap
Kobo
>low specs
>easily rooted
>expensive

>cheap
>Indeed, most things you pirate will be in .epub format
I would say if you are getting popular stuff, it will almost certainly be in mobi, or they will just include both versions considering how popular kindles are.
I've been using a paperwhite for about a year now and I've yet to convert anything. Whatever I downloaded was either in mobi or included a mobi version.
I've tried out (multiple) AMOLED devices for reading eBooks, I still get eyestrain much faster than eInk.
Nothing compares to e-Ink. It's literally as good as looking at an actual book. Just try to read something on your phone outside at noon. If you've got an e-Ink device shits fucking pleasurable to look at.
>NYT bestseller list
Please don't ever touch any book because it was on the NYT bestseller list
There is no surer way to know that it is mediocre, conformist crap being hawked by jews.
>most things you pirate will be in .epub format
Why do I only find PDFs then?
You can add wallpapers and change the font
on the other hand it's time consuming to do, and the guide's aren't as clear as they should be, and it's possible to brick your kindle if you do something stupid like turn it off in the middle of jailbreaking it.
you're an idiot
I would recommend onyx over kindle desu
The Kobos and Kindles use the same SoCs and panels: Kobos 'feel' slower though since their software isn't as optimized and stable (but then their software also does MUCH more than Amazons)
a kindle paperwhite in comparison lasts 1-2 weeks on a single charge, reading it every day.
I can actually contemplate bringing my entire library with me when I go camping. Something I don't bother doing with LCD screen devices because they don't last.
I read mostly quality non-fiction, not best-seller plebshit, and it's all in ePub when I find it.
300dpi, don't buy an ereader that has less than this.
what more do you need from a device for reading books?
The only PDFs I find are from books popular +10 years ago.
The best way to convert is actually with some old Windows software called MobiPocket (checked, their site is now down, I'm sure you can find somewhere). It does a remarkable job of converting the PDF to flowable HTML (using all kinds of heuristics to remove page numbers and word-breaks and stuff), then use Calibre to turn the HTML into epub.
Onyx
>run android
>good specs
>most up-to-date ereader tech
>don't have ads in the start menu like kindles and kobos
Kindles are VERY limited in how they can display books: limited fonts, sizes, layouts. Also in how you can control the page turns (tap zones, refreshes, etc.).
Trust me: if you're really into reading on an ereader you'll want to be able to set up your own fonts and spacing just how you like it, which you can't on a Kindle.
Also everything needs to be converted to their proprietary format, while Kobos can natively support epubs, epub3s, pdfs, cbzs, etc.
I'm going from a Glo HD (300ppi) to an H2O v2 (265ppi) which hasn't arrived yet. I really doubt I'll notice any downgrade: the larger screen should more than make up for it.
...FYI, Calibre is total garbage at turning PDFs into ebooks. Using Word or Pages or Acrobat to convert works much better, but as said MobiPocket is the best.
Well the only other format I find is CHM.
Maybe because the books that I look for aren't novels but actual textbooks.
Why no mentioned this yet

Shit never seen this before, thanks.
Acrobat Pro always does a good job but TAKES FOR FUCKING EVER. Most strain I've ever put on my computer.
This fucking autist dev: what the hell is a DMS archive??
Yes, but you could also get a kobo instead of that amazon kikery. I have a Glo HD I'm quite satisfied with.
Seriously what is this guy playing AT?!?
Where do you guys get your books?

Paperwhite or Voyage?
When will the chinks save us
Paperwhite unless you've got money to burn.
>When will the chinks save us
They already did, what do you think those cheap tablets are for?
Sure as hell not reading books.
Probably never.
Kanji are very difficult to render on e-readers.
Rakuten (Kobo) must have this figured out for the Jap market?
I believe that's what the push behind epub3 was: to support moon runes.
Getting eye cancer?
>Kanji are very difficult to render on e-readers.
Why? It's just text.
I think it's because in their manga books they run text in all different directions, and the layout really matters.
>manga books
So asian people don't read anything other than cartoon comics?
This is an investment for years to come, my dad still uses the first iteration of Paperwhite.
>Kindle Voyage: 180g, 7.6mm thick, magnesium back, PagePress buttons
>Kindle Paperwhite: 205g, 9.1mm thick, plastic body with soft touch back
Maybe those details in build quality and weight matter in the long run, that's why I asked.
It's super rare to see an asian reading anything other than comics for pleasure. They come in thick small books normally (or they just read on their phones) not big thin comic books like when you were 10.
I think overall they've become more rugged.
I remember those first Nooks with the frontlight, every single one of those had a broken screen after a couple months.
Just get a paperwhite with a cover and you will be set for the next 5 years at minimum.
Your same argument still applies. One more phone sale = further support for DRM content, e ven if the platform is FOSS and you never use it.
That said, user could just get a used/refurb Kindle
For the price of an e-reader, you would get an absolutely garbage tablet with a screen that's inferior for reading. And it's not like I would ever use the extra functionality a tablet offers, because I already have a smartphone.
My paperwhite stopped showing ads after a factory reset so long as I don't have an amazon account logged in.
You answered your own question, you only find pdfs because ebook formats are awful for textbooks.
