Microsoft Announces The Death Of Windows Phone
it's still getting security updates and bug fixes, but they aren't going to be making new Windows Phones.
>Pajeetsoft with another failed product
Let's face it: if it wasn't for the Windows/Office monopoly that company would have been bankrupt and irrelevant for decades.
Press F to...
There's really no reason to press F, just carry on.
Its a shame it was never successful. More competition would have been nice.
F
Shameful MS so little effort to attract developers. It was a decent and quick operating system, with a proper ecosystem it might have proved a decent competitor to the android botnet or apple walled garden
>if this company didn't have successful products it wouldn't be successful
thanks for the insight
Windows Mobile 8.1 is still the best mobile OS ever.
That's a weird way to spell "BlackBerry 10 OS"
Windows phone was over before it ever got started.
>muh rosy glasses revisionism
it was buggy and slow.
I had a Lumia 900 that I used for two years and I really liked it.
Sure, the app ecosystem was garbage but the overall aesthetic of the OS was great, live tiles were awesome, and it always ran buttery smooth.
Was Ballmer as CEO the biggest mistake MS ever made? He's a great public figure but he had no business running the company, MS stagnated for almost 15 years under him and managed to completely miss the massive mobile market.
I don't get it, why doesn't Microsoft just make their own phone but it uses Android? I'm pretty sure with how rich they are they can really make a good device. Seems like better resources put into making a good phone than a shitty Xbox console.
Well if this is true, that Microsoft is officially abandoning the phone platform... their recent decisions in regards to UWP and "Modern Apps" makes even less sense now.
UWP was created to allow app development with fluid design that would work on all three platforms; Desktop, Tablet and Phone. And the whole "Modern App" platform existed so that you could have a "Modern App" running on your phone and then seamlessly move over to your desktop and continue using it.
But considering how tablets can run desktop mode applications anyways, and how Microsoft is abandoning the phone platform... it seems incredibly moot point. Not to mention the recent announcements in regards to "Windows 10 ARM".
What even is the point of having the UWP UI design system, and the "Modern Apps" system on Windows 10 anymore if nothing takes advantage of it?
> (OP)
>Well if this is true, that Microsoft is officially abandoning the phone platform...
Or maybe they have a different strategy. They could launch a Surface phone that could run win10 and you'd get desktop applications on the phone running in responsive mode.
Microsoft basically have an entire Android phone worth of software ready to go. They could work on some of the under the hood stuff and have an equivalent to Amazon's Fire tablets and phones
They have a lockscreen, launcher, browser, virtual assistant, and all of their productivity apps on Android
They're either going to completely give up on their own stuff, or make an Android phone with Windows stuff on top, with the ability to download apps from the MS Store and Google Store
...
the surface phone running windows 10 with x86 emulation with "amp" solves the "no apps" problem pretty efficiently, and justifies the continuum project stalling
they'd be so fucking stupid not to launch that properly and spend another $10bn making it a success
Press S to spit on its grave
S
So UWP is confirmed a failure?
There has never been a ceo that has killed as many good products during exceptionally important moments as Ballmer for absolutely no good reason other than being utterly retarded.
rip zune u was a bad bitch
S
Why.. UWP would make Continuum possible.
No, UWP applications are great. Windows has sorely needed a unified framework for application design and development for a very long time, Win32 UI design is uniquely awful to work with and programs have very little consistency between them.
They're focusing on cloud shit now.
Microsoft is slowly going the way of IBM and moving out of the consumer market while moving to corner enterprise markets. They'll occasionally do something to remind the public that they exist but their main focus will be on their enterprise services like Azure.
the majority of money they make comes from consumer facing services like office so again they would be utterly ballmer-tier retarded to ignore the consumer market - the enterprise market tends to latch onto consumers
Enterprise customers are probably bigger clients for services like Office
I thought it was enterprise customers who use Office and Azure?
for sure but they latch onto consumer awareness
if office wasn't such a consumer powerhouse with everyone on the planet knowing how it works, enterprises would be using cheaper alternatives
azure is their only enterprise-exclusive platform
Just after I see some cuck with one of these for the first time.
iPhone 4 the win
S
they're actually pretty diversified compared to the others
Notice how the advertising and Windows revenue are almost identical? MS is going to start pushing towards merging those. Technically they already have since Win 10 is basically a Bing linked advertising platform.
good thing I have an ad blocking hosts file.
screw ad blockers, host files are the way to go. system level ad blocking.
Closure at last.
My Lumia 640 served me quite well and I really liked the OS itself. I'm going to IOS.
Also I'm going to watch the 5 stages of grief or /r/windowsphone. They're probably still in denial.
>/r/windowsphone
>/r/
go back
Sounds like they're Windows Phone to sleep, not killing it.
would Sup Forums buy a zune phone that ran on android and had a unlocked bootloader
That's you. How many people do you think actually do that? Yes, most of us here are savvy enough to mostly despy Windows and prevent most Google tracking. But to these companies, we are a statistical aberration. The amount of work and knowledge required to successfully implement these protections means most normies won't bother. These companies work on such a massive scale a few hundred anons means less than nothing to them. Fractions of a cent off their bottom line. Essentially it comes down to a cost benefit analysis. Is it worth it for them to spend the time to prevent you from anonymizing yourself? It's why you most often see the privacy invasions happening on major updates when they're reworking the code anyway. You might think you're "sticking it to the man," but the man doesn't even notice you.
Microshit is shifting its focus to Android and iOS. That effectively kills W10M
> You might think you're "sticking it to the man,"
Not at all. And I don't care about the rest, they're not my problem.
I don't care at all about "sticking it to the man" or that bullshit. I have no problems with advertising in general, I just don't want to see it. It doesn't bother me at all that other people do.
>but the man doesn't even notice you
I'd say that's a good thing.
This. The reason adblocking in general is popular is because ads are annoying, not because a handful of anons on Sup Forums want to "stick it to the man"
>Notice how the advertising and Windows revenue are almost identical? MS is going to start pushing towards merging those.
This has to be the most retarded thing ever stated on Sup Forums. The chart percentages are close therefore a merge is coming! LOL
I was thinking the same lol. Like, it's irrelevant how similar their slice of the pie is.
If you really can't see the signs that MS is looking to merge Bing with Windows I feel bad for you. It's one of the main reasons they're pushing Edge so hard. Think how Android integrates Chrome and Google services. Now imagine that on a desktop device.
While everyone can see advertisement is going to be more pervasive due to more ads showing the fuck up over the years with no signs of slowing down, your logic is abhorrently retarded. Similar revenue % per subsidiary in relation to general revenue != merges.
Then prepare for tides to turn. Apple is currently in a depression, their products stink and customers will soon renounce Apple for this.Meanwhile Microsoft is a slow burner, once they've completely tamed Windows 10 they will indefinitely expand to mobile computing.
>being this delusional
If this isn't bait, see a psychiatrist. You might have schizophrenia or something.
Windows phones are never going to be a thing again and you need to accept it.
Microshit blew the only chance they had years ago.
Did you ever use it? It was far smoother and more reliable than android versions of the same era
Let's not forget their pajeet tier servers
Many people praise their programing tools too
you're completely missing the point.
yes it's obvious they're going to merge. the fact that the slices are the same size has NOTHING to do with it.
Nice.
Hoping they will make a pocket PC instead of a phone now with LTE.
>Or maybe they have a different strategy.
That's what they are trying to do.
I doubt it will happen though
I'm sorry if you can't see it.
> their recent decisions in regards to UWP and "Modern Apps" makes even less sense now.
why? You think "phones" are everything?
I'm not glad it's dead, but I'm glad it's gone.
Also the delicious denial by WPfags... that will all too soon turn into bitter anger...
You mean the 0.1% that were still using that?
They literally paid developers to write apps for Windows phone. They literally even offered developers to write their apps for them.
There was even the YouTube case, where they even reverse-engineered YouTube's ad-api so YouTube would approve of their app (which was actually surprisingly decent) but Google STILL denied.
Today, the YouTube app is a web-link to YouTube. No Joke.
Holy shit, Apple is iPhone Inc. at this point.
and Google & Facebook are an AD company.
>their recent decisions in regards to UWP and "Modern Apps" makes even less sense now.
they're still doing surface tablets and laptops, where it actually makes some semblance of sense
but yeah, expect windows to be nothing but a 40 gig legacy compatibility layer in 10 years when most consumer products are ARM based running some variant of fag OS or Botnet and everything of worth has been ported and made cross platform.
If they neglect their macs any more, they won't be for long, though.
Developers have to develop on something. They fucked up the Mac Mini, Macbook Pro (touch bar) and the Mac Pro now, which were precisely the models aimed at developers.
Why can't MS commit to a product? Do they hate money?
Why does their strategy consists of leaving their products to rot and be left behind by the competition?
it's all about iPad Pro foo
anyone with two braincells could see it coming a mile off that Apples long term strategy would be to try and kill laptops with iPads even if it means cannibalising their own line. unfortunately for them the form factor is just too comfy for shitposting while laying in bed
Pay respects to the one who truly deserves.
MS is a enterprise software company that thinks they can be an internet service company like google and a consumer product company like Apple
...while being neither and all at the same time.
imo all their consumer products were a mistake, windows 10 is a terrible afterbirth that suffers from mutations because of these conceptions.
No way.
No professional would ever abandon a real OS for a toy like IOS.
There are too many things a mobile OS just doesn't provide and there are too many barriers they do provide.
The new ipad ios is more of a hybrid mobile and desktop os. At least if you consider osx a legitimate desktop os.
Tradition.
no real professional uses OSX for anything but DJing and Photography, both of which are dead ends now that normalfags get their images auto adjusted, sharpened and filtered and spotify makes auto playlists.
won't stop Apple from trying tho, their next big push will be streamlined video rendering, for those 10 sec meme videos, so all the cool kids can send their underage porn to each other more efficiantly while Tim Cook jerks off to little boys like we did during the fappening.
>What is Windows10s
wangblows take at ios
We can finally add this to the list.
No Windows 10S is microsoft take on Chrome OS retard
All other devices will be eclipsed by the number of phone.
So yeah, phone is everything now at least for the next 5 years.
Jesus, man.
S
No, it's not. At least in europe where i live. You need PCs and especially laptops for work which is why 2 in 1 laptops are great.
> No professional would ever abandon a real OS for a toy like IOS.
I dunno man, IOS is running on some pretty important and expensive things.
A lot of devs have jumped ship to osx now.
Do you know anyone who paid money for MS Office out of their own free will?
i did. The Student edition.
PS: How do i handle this fukin recaptcha gargbage that won't work even i did the thing?
>ipad at 10% of revenue
but Sup Forums told me the ipad is dead? is Sup Forums ever right about anything?
tu es un robot
Why not, it actually pretty cheap since 365.
>people pay money for shit they don't need because why not, it's cheap
Jesus fuck, I need to start a business.
For work we still need PC. But I notice that whenever we offwork, we basically looking at our phone all the time.
Wake up? First thing to check, phone.
Go to bed? Last post in Sup Forums.
Congrat, that how capitalism work.
To be clear, I kind of need it since co-worker send me excel all the time. And my dad job is teacher so he need that too.
And it cheap enough to make me not bother install kms server on my computer.
So it's not your own free will, you just need it for work.
I bought the student edition of 2010 back in 2010. That was pretty much just for OneNote, I had a convertible tablet laptop (a new and exciting thing back in those days) and OneNote was by far the best note taking program with pen input I'd used. Nothing came close, Evernote was ok but still far behind OneNote.
SSSSSS
All Microsoft has to do is make Windows Phone the replacement for Blackberry. Target Enterprise customers.
Keep the core OS but move the focus to security and enterprise integration.
Imagine if they had OS authentication on Windows Phone. You would go to your company's intranet site, and wouldn't even need to enter credentials, just like if you were logging in from your desk.
Integrate directly with Active Directory, so all of your permissions, network drives, and files are available from your phone.
They already have Office and Outlook, which is a huge plus, so it just needs AD integration.
Integrate Skype for Business on WP.
Beef up security with encryption, support for longer PINs (they're 4 numbers right now) or even just adding domain credentials to log-in to the phone, and smart-card access to get that sweet Department of Defense money.
If Microsoft was willing to put in the time, money, and effort - and they quit worrying about having the flavor-of-the-week app on their store - Windows Phone could be great, and a huge player in enterprise like Blackberry once was.
S
this.
It Think the real problem with WP was the past deeds of Microsoft. Most people doesn't know anything about computers and doesn't care about the business practices of a company but potential business partners do and that was what MS needed to become successful on the mobile side.
I guess they think the mobile devices was just a temporary fad and considering around 2008-10 they already practically controlled the desktop business they didn't care. However when the mobile market became lucrative probably most companies decided to not support them due to their anti-competitive behavior, so even with all their resources, due to the fact that people just uses whatever comes bundled with the hardware (if people relates the brand "windows" with quality they would have rejected other OS), coming bundled with only an small fraction of all the devices killed them in the exact same way they put out of business their past competitors: making them fall into a vicious circle, if your marketshare is low you'll receive low priority from third parties and if you lack applications your product will not be attractive. In short WP now is hardly even for a niche market which is the MS true lover, because it has all the disadvantages of linux on the desktop for example without any of the advantages.
The current Indian CEO made no effort to be ambitious with Windows Phones.
He should be fired.
Replace him with someone who wants to go all in on Windows Phones.
