I certainly don't miss having to have flash, java, shockwave, unity 3D, and whatever else plugins just to use more than half the web. On the other hand, there was a tradeoff the older web was far less infested with social media trash and not everything had to be about politics
I miss YouTube looking like that, not having your real name forced into usage, memes that originated from people and not companies, when people barely talked about politics and money, and when you came to the net to get away from daily life, not to extend it.
Also these
Pages that had a million different things taking forever to load used to be considered bad
Well thought out high-utility desktop-oriented page layout instead of scalable mobile shit with shitton of unused space and infinite scrolling.
I miss people using the semantic features of HTML 4.01, and I miss browsers supporting those features.
Lets say you had a story or textbook of multiple chapters. This is chapter 5:
This let your browser simply go to the "next page" and "previous page" automatically.
Flash and Java come after the old web.
>flash, java
Beats the fuck ton of JS shit on every site for no good reason (except those horrible all done in flash sites of course)
I used to browse using a 486, it was about as fast as it is now with a modern computer.
There's no fucking way JS is slower than fucking Flash.
t. Someone who despises JS webdevs
It's because the JS also heavily interacts with the DOM. Flash uses fairly simple vector graphics, not a complex layout format.
>unity3d
Literally when was this a big thing?
fpbp and /thread
>when people barely talked about politics and money
You were just a kid, stop trying to rewrite the past
>anything post-2000
>new
are you also playing retro games on your gamecube, newfag?
no u
anything other than text and images need to get OUT OUT OUT
That's not old web. Maybe if you mentioned BBS or AOL, then yes. But not 2007.
You guys are either not paying attention or are trying too hard to look cool if you don't realize there have been multiple ages that have passed since those days.
Someone made a project site where youtube videos played on the old youtube CSS.
Haven't found it since.
Where did it go?
>old web
I don't miss the old web because every website was unencrypted, Internet access was billed by the hour and it took multiple days to download crappy MPEG-1 rips of TV shows with 56k modems
>not everything had to be about politics
DO YOU EVEN REMEMBER BUSH
>old web
>jewtube
kek
>BBS
>AOL
>Old web
underages get the fuck out
That youtube was shit. i DO NOT miss flash. & it wasnt even the first video streaming service. Also the site we're on is older than that kek.
There's nothing to miss about old web either way. Not even old internet.
it was so confusing
>web browser supporting images
wtf is this bloat just use an external program
I miss it not being full of dumb kids all the time.
Plus I miss the lack of policing. Everything has laws around it now.
Fun fact: The very first website is still online under its original URL
info.cern.ch
>I miss it not being full of dumb kids all the time.
Are you sure?
I posted on Usenet in 1993 as a dumb 12 year old.
The Internet existed before the WWW, ya dunce
I never said there were no kids. I said it wasn't full of them. Now everything is so easy that some 8 year old can infest whatever they want.
Think he meant identity politics
That's about 2007-ish. How did you get it to play video? Did you use flash?
I miss when the web was something exclusive for nerds and hobbyists
Now that it's widely available it's turned into mostly trash and politics
>old youtube
So good, i wan't to die so much.
When geocities was your social media page and you chatted on AIM instead of texting on your phone
>AIM
>not ICQ
Why AIM instead of IRC?
No one used that
That was for finding CS pugs
Everyone used ICQ.
When messaging over the internet became a thing it was a godsend, I remember sms costing something like today's equivalent of 0.20€ each.
>No one used that
lol wat
>tfw id with 3 digits.
remember when you could just press the favorite button and it would be favorited? And then the favorites page would be easy to navigate through?
Yes, I get it, people used it. Even I did, but in my little bubble, it wasn't remotely as popular as AIM.
It's called a bookmark.
Browsers still have that.
back when having 300 views on your video ment something
I miss when google didn’t arbitrarily exclude things they consider to be wrong think
I don't think anyone misses the old web. It's the memories we had when the old web existed, discovering things, staying up late, etc.
>"old web"
> posts pic of post-google youtube
Holy. Fucking. Shit. OP.
You could have at least gone back before Internet Exploder was invented. Or, is that before your mommy was born?
Clinton cat on whitehouse and such is old web to me.
do you want a trophy?
>Durrr not old enough
KYS fagget hipsters
I miss that going to the web was an adventure in itself, where it was like a trip to Disneyland. It was a place to go and disconnect
I'd rather have my virginity back.
>ratings that meant something
>comment ratings that meant something
>related vids that were related and not clickbate shit
>video responses
>community
>not pictured but you could customize your channel page and shit
Holy shit man... forgot how much i missed old youtube.
miss the time when an ad was just a static banner and not malware trying to infest me with tracking cookies and bitcoin miners
I miss when Sup Forums was good
It's too politically correct now, can't even call someone a nigger without being banned
Mothafukkin' Myspace Custom CSS!!!1!1!
every bitch had to have the most eye-raping profile page and there were a good number of "dark as muh soul" profiles with tiny fonts fags.
Post some old youtube videos:
youtu.be
lol edgy nigger, you just proved your coolness level now
Some ways I do some I don't. Nostalgia goggles are retarded
lack of normies, greed, politics and other cuckoldry
The thing I miss the most was the web before *you* were on it.
00-10 internet was the best. It managed to bridge the gap between the adventurous community spirit of pre-00, but internet speeds were picking up making it far more pleasurable to use.
Though I do miss the anime and video game fansites... They had a particular aesthetic that it's hard to describe, with lots of split and cropped images arranged by tables.
I miss how innocent and fresh it was especially the early Sup Forums years.
...
Innocent in the meaning of how new and childish it was of course there were things like nigger tits and the like.
At least it was better than post-Google Plus YouTube where there's clickbait, "dank meme" compilations and fidget spinner videos.
>ITT: 10 internet years ago isn't old
Negative comments on youtube.
Filtered out the retarded kids.
Also the niche escapism of it all.
You find somewhere comfy and anyone who doesn't comply can get the fuck out.
Hobbyist nature, now everyone expects money for their effort instead of just doing it because you like it. Everything needs monetary payback now or else they'll stop doing that thing
That Youtube layout looks lot better than whatever garbage it is now tbbh.
People not putting their real names on the web
It wasn't owned, ran, or powered by Google. We're fucked now.
usenet disucssion groups
>Though I do miss the anime and video game fansites... They had a particular aesthetic that it's hard to describe, with lots of split and cropped images arranged by tables.
i sure as fuck don't and i still grimace at the fact that I will still find my old posts from a decade ago if i google my old online handle
I remember a little of life before Google. It was a lot harder to find what you were looking for but it could be a lot more fun too. Yahoo was absolute shit for finding what you needed right away, but it could lead you to a webring that would eventually allow you to stumble on what you were looking for and you would also find a lot of other interesting stuff along the way. Now, Google gives you what you want immediately (assuming their censors don't bury the content on page 25) and it's harder to discover new things if you don't deliberately set out to look for them. The Internet also seems a lot more sanitized and it's more than just extremist politics and porn being buried, walled off in its own corner, or outright censored.
I remember being told to never put real names anywhere on the Internet for safety. I always used a fake name on the Internet until I got a LinkedIn, Monster, and Dice profile. All my other profiles online are still fake names. When I do a search on my name, I thought only my profiles would turn up, but I found several people with my exact name in Poland, Germany, Buffalo, Chicago, and Baltimore, so I'm still pretty anonymous, given the others with my name are the type to just put theirs anywhere.
I don't remember it being this militant, nasty, and pervasive in the 2000s. Yes, blind hatred and love of Bush was easy to find. People could still have discussions though and I don't remember either side wanting to go out of its way to dox or seriously hurt anyone the way people do now. I first started noticing a change around 2013 (probably because of the Adria Richards thing) where people just got nasty and people started walling themselves off from any dissenting views and, should a view we didn't like somehow find its way in our timeline, it becoming a contest to see how well we can use the Internet to totally ruin someone's life.
> Netscape 1.0

So much memory
If you miss the camaraderie and randomness of the early Internet, NeoCities is a thing. Heck, I made a thread about it two days ago.
>wan't
Remember before YouTube back when video on the internet was more of a novelty than anything.
Took like 3 minutes to buffer even with "high speed" broadband and it was so compressed that sometime you had to wonder what you were looking at.
>ATDT the BBS number
>5 people online
>Get busy signal
>Can't check on my Tradewars game
MFW
omg... hacker!
When Flash animation was considered an art form.
Back when I first used the internet, it was just a thing for me to look up stuff related to my interest, like anime and games. But now instead of multiple geocities/angelfire/tripod/etc fansites and websites with tip/tricks/cheat codes, it's all boorus and wikias now.
>old web
That's a funny way to spell Gopher.
>not auto-redialing from your dialing list until connected
geocities
What are you talking about, mom is on the phone
,we don't have internet.
Fucking telix. I remember that shit
Make another thread and link me to it
Usenet is part of the internet but not the web. I do love the non-web internet, too, though.
I miss the days when being anonymous was a must, before social media infested everything.
Even the MEMORY of old web is taken over by "le aesthetic" hipster nu-males. I don't love or miss anything anymore.
>old web layouts
>tables and frames
>new "old" web layouts
>9MB of JS to make it look retro, man!
What, why
Not needing ad blockers
There were no appletard subhumans on it.
The old web didn't have YouTube or other tubular streaming sites.
>I certainly don't miss having to have flash, java, shockwave
I do, you could disable those and the rest of the page was still usable and you could enable those selectively.
Now you disable JS and/or CSS, there's nothing to use on the page anymore.
Are you from the future, or are you just being a nigger?
