That's what I'm doing right now, having my X230 hooked up to my monitor with the RX560 as an eGPU but the CPU in the Thinkpad is too weak. I'd probably be fine with mATX but I want to know if getting mITX is viable yet or not

Had the same problem as you. Go for mAtx, if is not enought, well, mItx will be the only way to go. You can make a fairly small PC with mATX, the shit thing is finding a small case that fit all of your shit. If you have more than 1 or 2 HD's, you will be fucked to find a good small case. But, if you only got a SSD and a HD, is easy to find a good and small case.

I've seen a few itx cases that appear to have acceptable levels of airflow.
The Fractal Design Nano S, Cooler Master Elite 130, and the Ncase m1 for example should all fit 12.5" graphics cards.
Silverstone makes some nice, well ventilated SFF cases such as the SG13, but they can be very restrictive in regards to how big your graphics card can be.
There also are a number of smallish cube cases from various manufacturers that are designed for itx motherboards while having decent airflow, but some of these cases also have limitations on how big your graphics card can be.
Slim cases like the Node 202 or the Silverstone Raven series are pretty cool, but while you could get a decent low profile cooler I wouldn't expect good results overclocking in one of those.

Yes but you'll have to play at Medium for a lot of games to get 60+FPS.

You'll need to upgrade to 1070 or higher of you want to play at 60+fps at Ultra settings.

I'd recommend a 1070 or Vega 56 at least.

To get 60+, you need a 1070, 1080, Vega 56, or Vega 64. To get the full 144, you will need a 1080ti.

Been considering upgrading either my CPU or GPU as my fx6300 4.0Ghz + r9 380 combo feels a bit weak and I'm aiming to max out FF14 1080@60fps.

I ran the benchmark to see which of the two is weakest as I can only afford to upgrade one of them at the moment. My GPU was at 100% throughout the bench and all cores on the CPU hitting 100% only a few times.

What would be the upgrade that would see the most improvements? Considering a 1600 to OC if it's the CPU or a 1070 as I can get one in hong kong for about the same price as a 1060 in the UK

Really depends on your budget since upgrading to Intel may be more expensive than buying a GPU. A GPU would likely make more of a difference, but if you're hitting 100% on both it's hard to saw.

Either way don't cheap out on either and get the best GPU or CPU you can afford. Don't try to get midrange for both.

I've got a 4690k at 4.4ghz and two 390s and I can run FFXIV at 60fps without an issue. I don't think CF scaling even exist for that game. Not entirely apples to apples though.

You need to realize that the delta in price between i5-8400+Z370 and r5-1600+B350 is enough to go from a 1050Ti to a 1060, which is a much higher yield upgrade for gaming than going from a r5 to covfefe lake.

There won't be much reason to buy ryzen for gaming rigs once the budget motherboards for 8th gen i5s are out next year, but until then the 1600 provides significantly better value for 1080p60 gaming which is by FAR the most common use case.

Im liking this meme. My itx video game console with walnut and tempered glass will be gorgeous.

It wont be an *issue*, but it will hold back performance of the 1600 to a certain degree. Its not a big deal though, if you would need to skimp on other stuff to get fast ram dont do it, though if you have the money i'd recommend at the minimum any 3000+ mhz ram, optimally something like a trident z or flare x. The latter might be a bit too much for a 1600 though.

ITX is alright, the smallest you can go and still have a normal sized GPU is either one of those bitfenix or Lian-Li cube shaped cases or the RVZ03. If you have a 3.5 inch drive youll be limited a little in GPU length but not as much as the really tiny ITX cases meant for HTPCs only
