Is it retarded to buy a (new) 3DS in 2017? I don't own the old model, and it seems like the switch has a pretty shitty games library, but I'm not really sure

No answer for you, but I have a related question: I never owned a DS, and figure I can pick up one cheap and play all the game for free with one of those pirate cards. What's the DS model to have?

Is it possible to pirate 3DS games like that?

No, not worth it since the Switch just came out. But really, consoles aren't really worth it in general.

But if you're going to buy a Nintendo product, get a Switch. 3DS' library is going downhill quick since nobody cares about it anymore.

I had a lot of success doing that on a DS lite with an r4 cartridge. literally had a blast and learned all about japanese games I didn't even know existed. also discovered pheonix wright ace attorney that way. I owe that r4 cart a lot

probably too old for what your looking for

Quick google says there's CFW for the 3DS, but that means finding an old 3DS with an old firmware on it.

Amazing library. Very cheap and it's also easy to install a CFW and pirate games if you want to
Specially good if like RPGs.

I think its worth it, specially if you didn't have a DS. Buy a flashcard, there are many good games available for the DS/3DS.

You can play them on 3DS AFAIK, as long as you have an compatible flashcard.
Alternatively, you could buy an used DS Lite if you're short on money. I think its worth to get the 3DS just to have a wider selection of games.

I own a switch and a 3ds. Switch has 5 triple A games and half of them are Mario. It's full of 8 bit indie titles. 3ds has all the best games and it still gets new releases for at least one more year. It's retarded to pirate as it just slows down and I expect Nintendo to continue their crackdown. It's doable on the 3ds but not worth the free games. Good luck.

By slow down I mean it takes some doing and requires upkeep

Everything you need to know about making your console able to play pirated games:

If you like the current 3ds game library then sure, dont expect much/any new releases.

Really?

I had a PS3 with CFW and it was pretty much flawless once the CFW was on there.

It's worth getting for backwards compatibility with the original DS alone.

The 3DS has a sdcard slot, you can just CFW it and install rom backup straight to the SD Card as a system program.

For DS games, you need a Flashkart. There are efforts to try and chainload .nds rom from flash, but compatibility is poor currently. DSi features in DSi aware games (like camera/etc...) are impossible to emulate, there only existed the one Flashkart that used a super old exploit, it got fixed quickly within the DSi's lifecycle. Its mostly gimmicks, and the wifi functions no longer work due to Nintendo shutting down servers.

Like say a new game come out and require a new firmware version, you'll have to un-CFW, update then re-CFW it. Currently if you already have the CFW installed, you can run software update without risk of losing your CFW, as it'll be patched on the fly, but there's no guarantee Nintendo won't fix it

Maybe a New 2DS or wait for Black Friday, if you can mod it. Huge backlog of games.

I've had a problem with .rap files on PS3, I just don't want to risk messing it up installing new programs on it. Good thing almost every game is available in .pkg

You should be fine with an DSi and an R4 flash cart if you don't mind to play GBA games on your handheld.

DSi has better battery life compared to any 3DS and the UI is simpler on the DS.

I never had a DS before, a months ago bougth my first one and an R4 cart.

Second hand DS Lite are like 10 dollars. DSi's gimmicks are shits, and the improved wifi doesn't matter because Nintendo already shut down the DS-generation wifi service.

It has some great games but not many more coming. It is worth it to own one but if I were going to get one today I'd look for a used one.

But you can turn off the wifi.

> Second hand DS Lite are like 10 dollars
Well, not everywhere.

>But you can turn off the wifi.

DSi's primary advantage over the DS-Lite, aside from bigger screen is that DSi aware game have more internet integration, as well as some stuffs with the Camera.. Pokemon Black/White had that Dream World thing for example. However Nintendo shut off all DS-generation wifi service 2(?) years ago, so the only thing remain is pretty much the camera games.

Also there are some DSi enhanced games (Some Pokémons and others).

Was the DSi ever cracked?

You mean, install some DSi Ware games from an SD?

Nope.

There a lot of flash carts (R4) that let you play NDS games and DSi Ware games (.nds format) from a microSD card. They are cheap and you'll be fine with a 2GB microSD
>That's my setup. It has like 20 NDS games

Effectively: no. There never was a CFW that let you run rom backup from the SD Card slot, you still needed a flash carts. And flash carts, bar one can only boot it in DS mode, those games won't be aware its being ran in a DSi, disabling the DSi enhanced functions.

The one flash cards that could used an exploit from another game, letting it boot games in DSi mode. However, games booted from that card could only access functions initialized by the game used to exploit. Unfortunately, that game did not use wireless for anything, therefore the card was completely useless for any practical purposes. The exploit was patched the next firmware update as well, and the developer dropped support and disappeared, leaving you with a 100 dollars piece of plastic

how do i make my 3DS able to do this if i dont have a microsd card reader?

you buy one

It could always use more, but there is some killer games.

That's what I meant by DSi aware games. The only thing it adds is extended wifi integration though, as well as the ability to connect to WPA/WPA2 network. With the shutdown of Nintendo's wireless service for non-3DS era devices, there's no point to owning a DSi.

The only reason to own a DS lite is if you want to play GBA games. Otherwise, dont.

>flashcard
Those are not needed. The homebrew launcher can get control over the device about 5ms you press the power on switch
smealum.github.io/3ds/

Buy the old model if you can find it cheaper
New model isnt special

If you're not interested in 3Ds games, a 10 dollars DS-Lite is fine for DS games. Or an android device with Drastic + Gamepad

>The only reason to own a DS lite is if you want to play GBA games. Otherwise, dont.

>bought a 3DS 4 years ago
>played like 20min and never touched it again

It's technology too.

Same :/

Then I bricked it because the "homebrew" faggots changed the instructions on me half way. I haven't hard hacked it yet because I don't have time.

It really sucks.

The 3ds has a pretty shitty library too. I only play animal crossing and ports of old Sega games on it.

>inb4 plebbit
they're good resources.

3DS has amazing game library already.

You have to be fucking kidding me.
And people wonder why Sup Forums is a consumerist shithole.

It is extremely worthwhile to buy and hack a [new] 3DS. So many fucking games, region free hacks, translations, etc. I was so impressed after a week of hacked 3DS experience that I ended up buying a non XL version to hack and use at work. A 64gb card (no more than 20 bucks) can give you a lifetime of things to do if you fill it up, and not just with games. Many useful applications. Do it.

a couple favorites. Bootlegs, baby!

Also can watch 3D movies without any glasses n shiet. That's awesome too. Just watched WWII in 3D

Can this be done for the 2ds xl?

Yes. 3ds.guide has all the info. Everything, even old 3DS can be hacked. Very straightforward, step-by-step. (But why miss out on 3D movie library and AR homebrew stuff?)

Switch is half a year old. It looks like it may start getting actual AAA titles this year and I'm pretty sure it will be the most popular platform (excluding steam) for indies.

How long does it take to get the CFW running?
I still have a 9.2 3DS lying around that I always was just too lazy to install it.

Mind naming some games?

Have you considered a fuckin' uhhhhhhhhhhhh boneless reporting the thread?

Well I think the 3DS library is pretty amazing.
And what's wrong with the Switch? It's the perfect, no-gimmick, powerful portable console I wanted from Nintendo. Plus it's library is pretty amazing for it's short life.

on a 9.2 3DS? A few minutes.

Outside of Mighty Switch Force (I and II), Mutant Mudds, Super Street Fighter IV, Pushmo and Steel Diver, no it does not.

If DS and 3DS games are up your alley, go ahead. I have n3DS XL with CFW and flashcart for DS games. It's fucking great. Huge library of fun games. Also, with CFW you can install VC injects of old console games not available in eshop VC library. Pretty great for comfy emulation. Right now I play Famicom tantei club and Clock Tower for SNES on my 3ds.

...

Homebrew doesn't mean you can play ds games.
You can download and play 3ds, either via .cia files or via freeshop, but you still can't play ds games without a flashcard.

Wait, that Detective Pikachu game came out already?

what is TWLoader

Fucking shit with no compatibility

Worth it because of ease of hacking. Even if your like me and kinda hate the 3dses library overall there's still a few good games and you can run a few good emulators on it. Ps1 runs decent.

Also please dear god stay away from the dev scene. If you thought Wii, vita, ds etc had bad scenes, boy

More suited to
The 3DS has a much bigger game library then the Switch.
If you hack it and get a flashcart you could play pretty much every 3DS/DS/GBA game,

You it's weird I've had this same question these past few days. I would say that yes it's worth it. In my opinion there seems to be a lot of games for it both current and past generation. Even better if you can hack it which is what I might do if I can figure out how to do it. I'm actually still deciding between a new 3ds xl or a 2ds xl myself (I'm going for a bigger screen size because when I started wearing glasses as a kid my head hurt whenever I played pokemon on my DS and I'm not sure if this still the case). Or just brace it and get a regular sized new 3ds on Black Friday.

Zelda, Monster hunter and fire emblem are enough for a long time.

Get a PSP. Better library, easer to mod.

Why are there no mods on Sup Forums?
Install gentoo btw
