Hi, I pretty much never shut down my laptop ever. I keep tabs open, programs running, etc., and I'm too lazy to set it all up again after a shut down, so I just leave it on all night, every night, usually on sleep. Very occasionally my laptop will start to behave weirdly after several weeks and that's when I'll shut it down, and when it's back on, it's working normally again.
My fiancee on the other hand, has a fairly old laptop around 5 years old. It's had numerous strange problems, been whiped twice over its life and still seems to struggle after a day of use if not shut down. We're moving in together soon, and we want a powerful gaming desktop PC. She says if we get one, it will be shut down every night without question.
What do you do /t/? Do you shut down your devices every day/night? Or do you just leave them on and put them on sleep when not in use?
Benjamin Young
she is right. always listen to your wife.
Andrew Morgan
>We're moving in together soon. She says if we get one, it will be shut down every night without question.
You need to nip this in the bud before you can even consider moving in together. Stop being such a beta cuck.
Jordan Wood
>/t/ Okay I'm gonna ignore that, but I agree with you're setting yourself up for a lifetime of cuckery.
John Thompson
>She says if we get one, it will be shut down every night without question.
In a few months you'll be one of those cucks that posts "My wife finally let me get X" and while you're posting she'll be out riding the cock carousel.
Blake Perez
>It's had numerous strange problems, been whiped twice over its life and still seems to struggle after a day of use if not shut down >be wangbones user >be female >have no common sense x2 The only thing that's whiped is you, OP.
Bentley Walker
Most damage to components is from turning them on and off, not from continuous operation. If she's too stupid to understand this, show her that LTT video on it.
Owen Jenkins
Sounds like something you’re running (apps, different OS version, different drivers, whatever) has a memory leak.
Way back in the day, the same thing with happen with the Win9x series. If you left Win95 one for two days straight the thing would go batshit; bounce it, and it’ll be fine.
Use whatever you have that displays memory usage. When it starts to get funky look to see if there’s a particular process that is sucking up a ton of memory.
Brandon Wilson
The humidity where I live is godawful and I can't afford AC so I have to leave my PC on all the time or risk waking up to it being filled with condensation. I've never really had any problems
Grayson Hall
hawaii?
Brody Stewart
put your foot down hard and have a god damn spine if you dont she will just walk all over you untill she finds someone with a better life to latch onto
Jaxon Parker
>it has been whiped twice Calm down there, slave master.
Jaxon Harris
No reason to, it's quiet and electricity is cheap. I'm also lazy.
Tyler Gray
Thanks for the first actual response.
You guys have been on Sup Forums way too long. I make more than her, and make sure the right choices are made in our relationship when they actually matter. I think it's sad that just because I mentioned that she said she wanted the PC to be shut down every night, you guys think it will now happen and will ultimately leave me getting cucked and ruin the relationship. How petty can you lot really be? The only reason it was mentioned at all is because we both wanted to put money toward it as a symbol of us purchasing something expensive together.
I was trying to show how paranoid she is about turning off PCs given her laptop's issues. If I was really concerned about being a "beta cuck", I'd post in /adv/ about having some kind of confidence issue or problems with being a pathetic beta cuck. However, I don't have either of these problems so I am not in /adv/. I am in /t/ wondering what other PC owners do just out of curiosity.
Calm yourselves.
>whiped is the same as whipped Doesn't quite work, but still made me laugh.
Benjamin Campbell
I never even put my PC to sleep. It just runs 24/7, usually crunching BOINC shit while I'm sleeping or at work.
Jacob Sullivan
>I am in /t/ Is this advanced bait?
Parker Turner
>/t/
David Butler
Also, "whiped" isn't even a word, you illiterate motherfucker. Maybe you meant "wiped".
Kevin Brown
Just turn it off, jeez. Tabs can be saved, other shit too, or write a script to open up your stuff. Or do you by some miracle not recieve a power bill?
Jaxson Gray
No, you are an idiot cuck. You tell your wife that you will decide all matter regarding the function of the computer and that's final.
She clearly doesn't know enough about the subject to be in a position to make decisions.
Brayden Ortiz
>I make more and "we" make the right choices in the relationship Oh yea, right choices - where one side gets what they want and the other can fuck right off. Don't be surprised when she cheats 1 year in.
Noah Cook
My PC has been on 24/7 for the last two years and I haven't had any issues, it's been awesome. PC runs cool and quiet so I don't even hear or feel it. The reason why her laptop does this is because its shit.
Aiden Hughes
You're single, aren't you?
Sebastian Morales
What she really means is she doesn't want you to stay up all night playing video games and neglect her
Ian Flores
yup
Parker Martin
No. I have a wife who understands that I'm the administrator when it comes to computers at the house.
Jaxon Powell
kek sorry I meant Sup Forums obviously, first time here, initially hovered over t to see if it were technology.
It must be nice to never make mistakes ever in life.
kek
Even greater keks
Elijah Gray
What? You don't administrate your own home network? Faggot.
Evan Bailey
Shutdown and physically disconnected when not in use is the better option. advantages: - less power usage. - you can't infect or pwon a stopped machine. - less noise. - less potential problems with unstable mains (in a bad overvoltage surge, you could fry your PSU). - No battery overcharge for laptops. Modern lithium batteries have reduced longevity if you charge them always to the max.
And the old meme, that turning on and off computers damages components is a little exaggerated. With a well designed puter (good PSU brand) your machine will be long obsolete before it fails of too much switching.
Leo Robinson
>Even greater keks I set up all accounts and permissions on my network and wife's computers. I run it similar to how I run the network where I work. My wife never has any problems or tech issues because I've set everything up correctly and removed permissions where necessary. I've got file and media servers running for all our needs. My wife doesn't tell me how to do things when it comes to computers, same way how I don't tell her what to do when it comes to cooking. I know how to do my job well and she knows how to do hers well.
Josiah Reed
>first time here Who would have guessed.
Nolan Morris
>- No battery overcharge for laptops. Modern lithium batteries have reduced longevity if you charge them always to the max.
Speaking of old memes...
Andrew Foster
You seem to think that having issues equals posting at /adv/. It doesn't, you can have issues and not post on /adv/, you can even think that because you don't post there you don't have issues. Instead of responding to people who tell you "you have issues" you ridicule them. Maybe it's time to face them buddy
Noah Nelson
What am I missing? I always shut down my computer both desktop and laptop. I thought this is what everyone does. Why would you waste energy like that?
Nathan Parker
Not actually an old meme... There are papers documenting it.
Blake Gonzalez
The fedora tipping is hard
Christopher Turner
>Sharing a computer, let alone a desktop, with someone (especially female). BACK OFF NOW! There is a reason it's called a "personal computer" user! Your "wife" will snoop in all of your stuff and will make sure to always use it just when you need/want to use it as well. In general, sharing anything so time-consuming is bound to cause friction because one of you (the one with more balls) will become the boss while the other will have to whimper and beg.
Ryder Mitchell
> - less power usage. A valid point (the only one). > - you can't infect or pwon a stopped machine. Being vulnerable for 8-12 hours a day is more than enough to get pwoned if you are vulnerable. I can't think of any thread model where the reduced time online makes a meaningful difference. > - less noise Unless you are running 24/7 computations in a loud machine (and if you're doing that, you probably have a server located somewhere outside your bedroom) this shouldn't be a problem either. A sleeping PC makes no sounds; an idling PC is usually completely silent. Set your fan curves properly. > - less potential problems with unstable mains (in a bad overvoltage surge, you could fry your PSU). If you live in a third-world country without fuses in their plugs, get some proper surge protection. "Having the computer off 50% of the time" is not adequate protection by any means. > - No battery overcharge for laptops. Modern lithium batteries have reduced longevity if you charge them always to the max. Are you telling me you don't use something like tlp to control your battery? Does than mean that when you're actually using your laptop during the day, you're constantly unplugging it to safeguard the battery then plugging it back in once it drops a bit?
Dominic Martinez
A properly set up environment will prevent any snooping. Linux was designed from the ground up to be used in mainframes with hundreds of users, after all.
Andrew Roberts
Still, the issue of fighting over control of it will is the biggest issue. Better off to have a separate machine for each person.
Isaiah Bennett
Because a sleeping computer barely uses any energy.
Luis Reed
>the 60 years old faggot post
Daniel Thomas
just leave it up all time. the only downside is your electrical bill is gonna skyrocketing. sleep is ok, but simply leave it doesn't hurt. >gaming gpu might as well mine some coin while not in use

>1960 + 57 >wife cooks while you play with your toys Grow up.

Wasn't OP wife actually talking about consomming less power? I don't understand why people are sperging out
Leo Cox
Did your big sister install search bars again?
Gavin Powell
never shut down my laptops. but my gaymen pc gets shut down as soon as I'm done gayming. east just too much power - even if it's just idling.
Thomas Lewis
>she said she wanted the PC to be shut down every night
You actually said that she expressly stated it would be, with no potential for discussion about it from your end.
cuck.
Hudson Cook
>and we want a powerful gaming desktop PC Does your fiancee have a cute penis?
Isaiah Williams
29.
William Rivera
Are you upset because your wife doesn't cook?
Hunter Powell
Don't think I've ever seen so much projection in a thread on Sup Forums before.
Damn, you guys.
Nolan Clark
Only ones projecting are the cucks.
Leo Walker
I thought I gave good advice but it got ignored.
Owen Richardson
Likewise, if one says they post to /adv/ when they have issues, it clearly means one attempts to face and rectify them, and implies that not having a need to post to /adv/ means they are currently content. Of course though, I do have some issues atm such as living arrangements, hence why I'm moving to a new place with my fiancee, but my issues do not lie with being a "beta cuck" or whatever buzz words are consuming /gif/ these days. I only ridicule when the 'issues' are based on Sup Forums reality.
We'll both still have our old laptops for personal use. It's really just for PC gaming and video editing. She will probably only use it to play a select few games and barely use it otherwise.
No she's concerned the PC will end up shitty and slow like her current laptop is when it's not shut down every day.
You actually think that if a wife expressly states something as a fact without room for discussion means that the man can't open a discussion and must back down?
How sad.
No, she does not have a penis.
If any of your advice was concerning the actual discussion of shutting down your PC then OP has not ignored it.
Evan Moore
>She will probably only use it to play a select few games Landwhale.
Luke Gomez
>She says if we get one, it will be shut down every night without question. You are a cuck.

No, just bad memories of sharing PC with bossy mother...

Welcome to Sup Forums's guide to having a successful marriage.
Step 1 - Give yourself an edgy, 'overlord' name to establish your authority and dominance.
Step 2 - Women are not people, and if they are, they are inferior, so don't treat them as such.
Step 3 - Make sure everything in your life is securely locked and kept away from your wife. We wouldn't want anyone, let alone your wife, to pry into your perfect life now, would we?
Step 4 - If she has a job, make her quit. If she isn't catering to your every need then she's not doing her job as a wife, and you can't continue being the strong, independent, self-reliant man you've always been.
From us here at Sup Forums, congratulations on your marriage!

It's just about the decision of turning off the computer. Somehow, you've managed to extrapolate a lot bullshit using your ass.
Brody Mitchell
Nice projection.

It's just a decision of turning off the computer. Somehow, everything thinks this makes OP a beta cuck.
