Like it has been said here, only the phone business was sold and it probably saved Nokia. I'd argue that the partnership with Microsoft was the mistake, not the selling and while that partnership did lead to the selling of the phone business, Microsoft failed in an epic way. Basically they paid billions for nothing, because the Windows Phone is obsolete.
Nokia should have trusted themselves and concentrate on MeeGo. It came late to the market but it was generally praised as an OS, so there's a good chance that it would have gained momentum. Back then Nokia was still big.
