If you want to get into photography you want a lower mid Nikon or Canon. Theres lot of memeing going about MILC cameras, and many other manufacteurers do excellent cameras too (like Sony), but thing is Nikon and Canon compatible stuff is very abundant so the used goods market is huge, and most pros still stick to the big two (well except the super high end with brands like PhaseOne and Hasselblad but thats a completely next level story).

Buying older models, used or new is something to consider. I don't know Canon, but for example in nikon the D5100 is just as good as the new D5300 but sells for way cheaper. The D7xxx is the sweet spot though, D7000 or D7100 are and will remain an excellent choice.

For starters the D3xxx is good but you can grow it out quick. You can get one with the starter lenses for like €300-400, then roughly speaking for every jump (eg D3xxx to D5xxx) add €150-200.

Thats just the body, and it all boils down to lenses. The kit lens (what they gave you with the box) is okay and will obviously outperform any compact camera, but are regarded entry tier.

What lenses you want depends, but generally speaking everyone needs a travel lens to cover a wide range of focal length, a so-called fixed lens (that can't "zoom" but in exchange it lets through lot of light), and perhaps telelens for big "zooms". Something like a basic fix 35mm 1.8 goes for like €170, a good travel lens can warrant anything from €200 to infinity.

This is just the very bare bone equipment and for Nikon. Canon is more popular btw. Theres shit tons of accessories but for most people having a tripod and a camera bag is enough.

As for technical knowledge, theres lot of helpful tips and guides online, just google, also check the /p/ sticky. Theres a few certain stuff that one should learn first like rule of thirds and golden ratio, and basic composition approaches. Mastery is all about knowing how to handle lighting, but that comes with practice.

got D5100, can't say a bad word about it, maybe one thing I'm missing from the D7xxx is more focusing points, or whatever you call it in english, 11 I have are good enough, but the 7ks have so many more, that I noticed the difference. I don't know whether that's a reason for the price difference though
