You can install the VLC plugin, and have videos play in another tab (not inline), but the plugin is buggy and usually doesn't get to the end of videos before dieing.
I'm not sure why technically this is so hard.

Yeah, the picture-in-picture is why I use Safari exclusively now. It's glorious. There's an extension that forces it to work on all sites.
