For the linux ecosystem, I would suggest the Arena chess GUI and then the Komodo chess engine.

I was actually quite impressed with the amount of games in the Debian repo. Most of them are shit, but things like Dwarf Fortress, DCSS, Seven Kingdoms, OpenCiv and ADOM are pretty fucking good.
