Well, this would be best answered by a native speaker, but for what it's worth, my thought is that there's a difference, in that the first is translated as "As soon as I read this book, I discovered his Chinese isn't too good" whereas the second would be "When I read this book, I discovered his Chinese isn't too good."
The first sentence seems to emphasize that the events occurred in rapid succession.

single-character words are rarely used as nouns in modern Chinese. Their two-character counterparts are preferred in most cases. For instance, 瓶, 盒, 箱 respectively refer to bottle, box, chest, but in modern Chinese they are all attached 子 to form a two-character words(not applied to all occasions just an example). So when you encounter a single character noun, just find its two-character version. Single character verbs seem not have such problem.

though i think 漢語(汉语) is literally "Chinese language(s)" which means it could be used to refer to both written and spoken Chinese and sometimes it means "Chinese languages" or "Sinitic languages" as a group of languages in linguistics. 中文 indeed looks more like the written form.
