What is your stance towards piracy Sup Forums?

Piracy is a pretty cool guy

I LIKE IT

it's dead

yea, piracy is a pretty cool guy, eh saves me money and doesn't afraid of anything

Totally fine with it. Trying to make money on something that isn't scarce is completely retarded.

ships shooting other ships is bad

also nice dubs

You mean sharing? Yeah, I like sharing. Sharing is good. I'd share a car, I'd share a book, I'd share the world. Data is social by design. From each according to their seeds, to each according to their needs.

The absolute STATE of communism!

Only redditors think it's immoral and bad to pirate anything.

Why are not going to disable a primary function of computers which is copy/pasting data to protect a business scheme

DRM is a gateway for censorship, surveillance and enforcing rules on a medium that flourished because its freedom in the first place.

CPUs with built in DRMs are as dangerous as global warming.

Fuck off

good thing we all have CPUs with built in DRM now

...

Overall I approve it.
Complaining about downloading a 50 year old movie is plain retarded IMHO. Same for pirating abandonware ganes. Corporations wouldn't get those sales regardless.
Pirating old movies in no way harms the movie industry: I myself go to cinemas quite often to watch new movies. That way, you encourage them to actually profit by making NEW movies instead of selling the same old ones.
As for music? It depends. Albums whose labels makes 90% of the profit are A-OK, but independent artists that are very good are worth paying for.

I got flamed on Sup Forums yesterday for torrenting mount and blade warband. Who was in the wrong here?

My stance is that it isn't theft because nothing original is taken it's merely coped. Does it hurt the developer or artists? Depends. Piracy actually helps certain people like bands. Thing is musicians make most of their money touring. A lot of the money from album sales go to the record label and others. Piracy kind of spreads music around and they get new fans every day. More fans = bigger popularity, bigger concerts, more money.

Being on Sup Forums makes you automatically wrong.
Also this.
My father often tells me that nowadays more people are listening to quality music thanks to the internet and, ironically, piracy.
I myself, if I were a professional musician, wouldn't mind my music being "pirated" as long as most of my income comes from concerts.

Needed in circumstances. Want to watch a rare movie, or TV series, good luck finding it! Even some older games can be hard to find. Licensing and everything being broken up into a multitude of streaming services is also an irritating problem.

That's just the begining of the end

Next thing is built in CP detectors in GPUs and then built in Political Correctness in CPUs

Fake as FUCK

Piracy hurts the first few months after release, after a year it doesn't matter

certain thinks benefit tremendously thanks to piracy due to hype.

Most of these replies are ridiculous.

Piracy is fine, and not an issue.

There's 2 main reasons people pirate. Either they can't afford to, or the pirates offer a better service.

The only reason I pirate anything is the latter.

Since Steam was released, I no longer pirate games. I have a neatly organised library that automatically updates, and I can download the games at insanely fast speeds and don't have to worry about malware or keygens with annoying music.

I no longer pirate music now that I use Spotify. It's a much nicer experience than trying to pirate music. Having to download something then import it into a media player just to see if you like it is tedious. I love being able to instantly check out related and recommended music.

I still pirate TV/Movies because Netflix sucks and hardly has anything on it.

it's a crime but i don't care

anyone saying otherwise is immature and a contrarian

If I would rather not have something than pay for it, I pirate it.
If I would rather pay for something than not have it, I pay for it.

...

intellectual property doesn't have any right to exist

This, litterally.
Steam is a great service. (uplay and oranges aren't bad enough that I won't use them, either)
Gplay music (I know, google, hurr durr) is a good service, so I use it. The features such as "For people who like [band]" playlists add extra value, which is nice.

My friends constantly complain shit isn't on netflix, I can torrent anything and it shows up on plex. So I do the latter.
Microsoft office is retardedly expensive, so I torrent it.
I've paid for windows enough fucking times, with laptop licenses and shit like that. Sure I could drop whatever it costs now-a-days to get an oem license, but why do that when it's easier to torrent it.
Adobe shit. Torrent that, because it's retardedly expensive for an individual user that isn't using it for work.

So yeah. It's on a case-by-case basis.

It just means you haven't thought of anything yet.
I'm that once you think of something worthwhile and someone else steals it, you'd bitch and moan like there's no tomorrow.

I have like eighty anime downloaded and a fuckton of games, so I'm pretty against it I guess

Somali niggers shooting at ships is bad

So if you want something but don't want to pay for it, you steal it. Good one.

they are free to improve on my ideas

I only pay for something I can resell or a performance like a concert or something

Have you ever had any worthwhile idea?
Exactly.

>flamed
I just woke up - what year is it?

Life's hard then it's over.

It depends, I wouldn't pirate music today, since several acceptable services exist for that. Movies on the other hand needs more pirateing in my view, since services like Netflix and Amazon still isn't on the same level as the music business (spotify, apple, google)

>Facebook filename
Dumb zuckercuck.

have you?

Oof ouchy my feelings.

The only thing I pirate is animuh because how else am I supposed to watch it with subs

No. Therefore I don't claim that I should have unhindered access to other peoples' ideas.
What you want is the equivalent of a janitor claiming that he should be paid as much as a doctor, since it benefits both parties! The janitor gets as much as a doctor and the doctor gets as much as the janitor! WOW!

>facebook user
>retarded
adds up

Piracy is a spook, unless you're raiding ships with your boat and wood leg you're not a pirate.

you could use crunchy roll, the anime site -by- anime fans, -for- anime fans. With professional subtitles released less than a day after release in japan

Explain please.

I do, but most stuff isn't on there

You're the retard here user

Piracy is not stealing

remember when Jesus only had His disciples buy fish, they only got 7 and then Jesus fed all His followers?
Did Jesus stole fish?
no, stealing means taking from someone, copying is not stealing, unless it's something secret, then you are stealing secrets

This is the problem with shit like netflix and crunchy-roll and similar services.
And why I avoid using them, and pirate instead.

What do you mean when you say "worthwhile ideas"?
Do you know / have you studied the lives of people who had "worthwhile ideas"? (please name a few, if so)
Did they care about intellectual property at all?

Which torrent client would Jesus use?

>professional subtitles
These days Google provide more coherent translation than CR.

If thinking for oneself is too hard , good news ,there is an official paper done by the EU which shows piracy doesn't hurt sales.

He stole from all those bakers and fisherman that he'd have otherwise bought from, obviously.

I get all my new GoG releases through my good friend Senõr P. Iratebay

Deluge.

Piracy is stealing, and illegal.
Yet I'm a proud pirate.

your dumb

What about Judas?

Moot is a fag who never got into Sup Forums, the heart of his site and more, thanks for the reminder

>Sup Forums, the heart of his site
hahahaha
you're 12

So, some guy develops some software and its taken him several years to make a product that can compete with the best. He sells the first one to recover his costs and ensures that he can pay the mortgage for 15 years and feed him and his family for 20 years. So the first person to download it pays $4Million dollars, then everyone else gets it free right? Is that how it should work, or should the guy just not bother writing software and go into aircraft engineering instead. Or wait, maybe if self entitled pricks, usually the unemployed who dont want to work, just realised that if they cant afford his software and they dont have to have his software then they should have some respect and stop making copies that have to be cracked open like a safe. That way he can now sell each copy for a masly £20 a time and those who can afford it dont have to get their computer botnetted by pricks like you

Piracy provides competition to a system without any. It was the birth of iTunes and other online music sites and it forces prices down. The only way companies can beat piracy is if they remove access to computers entirely (as piracy was done before the age of internet).

But piracy hardly affects sales the majority of the potential user base are going to pay for the software in the first place and many people who pirate will eventually pay for what they pirate. If you look into what vidya companies have been doing their anti piracy tactics are worse than pirates "stealing" their games just look at the recent assasins creed release all the weird piracy prevention shit literally makes the game run like shit on high end computers. Also the price of media has increased by a huge amount over the last 10 years or so. Considering the fact getting media on a physical medium is rare these days the prices should have gone down not up. As industries expand comoanies get more greedy

I mean you have a point, but you're assuming that people are entitled to get rich by writing software
You can get paid for writing ethical (read: free) software as well via either crowdfunding (by asking people to pay for features you're willing to implement) or by companies who use said software, as well
I also can't think of any software written by a single person / small team that can compete with the industry standard in any given area

by default I don't give a shit about your intellectual property profits and if I can get it for free with relative ease I will

if it aint broke, dont fix it

Share gf to Black friends

Why isnt there a government platform where you can download everything, from music to movies to programs? You would just pay a monthly fee and the government pays the artists based on the number of downloads. This would make a fair system, because the government does not need to make profit. Such laws already apply for state radio and television, atleast in the Netherlands. It is called the "mediawet"

communism rocks!

I have bought exactly 1(one) piece of software since sega genesis ages.

She was a redditor too so, I'm glad she is gone forever, what a bitch

It's a complicated issue and not one you can fix without fucking the world horribly.
The best approach with piracy is to take advantage of it, be by just using the third worlders that pirated your software as your free marketing tool, or pulling an Adobe and letting people get used to your software, too used to it, at a point the companies will have no choice but buy your software. (because companies yes are big and full of cash and easy to sue unlike individual users.)

Communism is a lot more than just "giving free shit".
And it's on this a lot more that it fucks up horribly.

copying an infinite resource harms nobody

LOL, fag

I feel no regret when stuff is non-free as in freedom

I don't mind buying stuff for a reasonable price, but if I wasn't going to pay the unreasonable price me pirating something isn't a lost sale. If anything I would buy it in the future.

when was the last time Sup Forums was even remotely relevant? 2009?

if it wasn't for piracy I'd be uncultured and uneducated as shit

I was talking about that with my co-workers.
Of course all types of piracy which stimulate the knowledge.
Don't forget to enable your backd00rs guys.

>What you want is the equivalent of a janitor claiming that he should be paid as much as a doctor
but this is a good thing
everybody being given what they need to flourish and live their life

the problem is capitalism and wasting resources, throwing away perfectly fine stuff after a year because somehow the new model is an absolute must to have, or throwing away food that "expired" yesterday as if food going bad is a hard threshold rather than just an artificially enforced attribute it does not actually have, or the practices that encourage pointlessly shipping stuff halfway across the world because the bureaucracy makes it cost less

or the view some people have that "shame" people for not working when doing menial stuff becomes less and less necessary as machines make people obsolete in those areas

like (for now) we each only have maybe 30 000 days or so to live, why needlessly take away from that?

The problem is that if we assume that intellectual property is fair and has it's place in our society, then every single invention and overall human progress becomes a race to claim your ownership over ideas. Every new invention we make today would never exist without an intellectual foundation of the great minds from the past. If you are the first one to discover or implement it, this doesn't mean you are the owner of the idea, you are just the first one to finish the puzzle, you have no right to injail the other person just because he did the same thing a year later.
>TL;DR
Intellectual property is another way for Big Brother inc. to enslave you. Take the AIDS cure for example, the big corporation bought the rights for it from the first guy who discovered it. EVERYONE could have discovered it later but now people are forced to pay 750$ instead of 17$ just because they say so.

Why would I live just as shitty as a hotel maid if I've worked 10x harder to become a surgeon? Why would I bother to write a better code if pajeets will have the same salary like me?

More like voluntarism at work with things like fansubs, music mixes, and modding communities.

Its good when things aren't officially available. Most of my favorite movies are not officially available in the west, not translated etc so I have to resort to that.
As for games, I always buy them. If there is some game that I kind of want to play, but want to support with my wallet, I won't buy it and I wont pirate it either because piracy is pretty harmful for everyone on that front.

Few years ago it was discussed in length how publishers do keep an eye out on the amount of downloads for every particular torrent of a game. This is seen as "interest towards our product" which resulted in the denuvo fuckfest that we have today.
If I'm going to vote with my wallet and not support some shitty publisher or some shitty practices, I simply ignore the game.

As for music, I rarely download music even through private trackers anymore because prettymuch every band I listen to has a bandcamp site or you can buy it from them directly. Real cheap and I genuinely want to support good artists like that.
Some artists even sent me oddly long thank you e-mails where we talked a bit back and forth which was pretty cool.

Utorrent 2.2.1

Do not try to charge money for something as abundant as air or digital copies. The problem of monetizing the creation of digital products is not my problem to begin with and you should stop pretending it is. It's your problem. Yes, you are the one trying to get money. I do not have any obligation to do it for you. It's your own damn fault not making a profitable business plan. Many have failed as you have, but please do not blame others for your own short sightedness. Your visioned market does not exist. I'm sorry if the world made you belive otherwise.

µTorrent.

It died when TBP got wiped

Piracy is for teenagers and poor people.

But it didn't, though. You just have a cucked ISP.

I pirate because everything is way overpriced.

Pirates are pretty cool guys who aren't afraid of anything.

How old are you, I'm just curious

STOP PIRATING

20

I pirate shamelessly, however, if I get significant value out of something I pirate, I will usually buy it.
