>get rid of router & modem
>cancel home internet service
>obtain smartphone on an unlimited plan
>use phone as a router whenever you're home
>turn off tethering whenever you're not using it
>only pay like $60/mo for your internet
>cheat the system
why doesn't this work?
Get rid of router & modem
It does. I did this for about 2 years before getting home internet and didn't really miss out on much.
If you don't host servers from home and you don't play games like Call of Duty then there is no point in paying for home internet.
oh, cool.
I guess I'll do that, then.
if that an option, yes, you can do that
where i live mobile data is more expensive though
You do need to make modifications to your registry or enter a couple of commands in OS X or Linux to prevent your carrier from knowing you are tethering.
Use a rooted phone, not from the carrier and change your default ttl to 65 and you should have unlimited tethering.
my internet is only $40 a month and it's pretty fast
data on the other hand is about $80 for unlimited
>$60/mo
>only
what the fuck amerimutts. I pay this much for home internet and unlimited call/messaging + 25GB of data plan for four people
This. Also, my cell reception in my house is pretty shit, so it's not practical for replacing a home connection. It's enough to make calls/texts/emails, but for anything more intensive it's not nearly enough.
Just a shame about the rest of your shitty country, Igor.
cell reception is spotty and get high ping
Where I am, broadband is advertised as $80 but it's actually around $140 when the bill actually comes around.
Meanwhile, Virgin is doing an unlimited thing for like $50. And the first year is $1, so naturally I'm kind of gravitating toward that.
>my cell reception in my house is pretty shit,
that's not really a problem, you can just get a standalone data modem with an external antenna and place it somewhere suitable, then access it over ethernet or wifi
internal antenna in a phone only really needs to be good enough for outdoor use, as that's where mobile phones are primarily used
I don't live in a 3rd world country where telcos collude with each other not to compete.
some companies are offering unlimited tethering nowadays, actually
oh, also note that some phones have ports for an external antenna, so there's that, too
Ping is not optimal. I've been using my phone as a hotspot for like two weeks and it just feels kinda sluggish. I'm only on 3G though, 15 shekels a month
Most networks in the UK restrict you from tethering at all if you're using an unlimited data plan
>3G
there's your problem.
get 4G LTE and you should be fine.
Most carriers in the US will let you tether but they'll limit it. So, say, they'll throttle you if you use more than 25 GB in a month but otherwise, it's unlimited.
Meh, I don't usually really use the internet on my phone much so I got this, 4g would have been ten shekels more
Or just use a dedicated LTE modem
that's what i initially wrote
>$60/mo for your internet
Get's you 3gb on a mobile in my country.
That's retarded.
I do this right now and it works.
How's battery life?
My phone has a 4100 mAh battery. Honestly, it really depends. If I'm just lurking on Sup Forums and other light websites it's okay, watching lots of videos or streaming movies drains the battery faster. I charge it about once a day.
I used to do this with a phone that had a 2100 mAh battery, now that was shit. Had to charge it often or just keep it on the charger forever.
I'm currently about 200 GBs over the 22gb limit or whatever it is, but since I live in the middle of nowhere, i dont get throttled. And PDANet+ is a dream since I can tether and still not get throttled past the 15gb limit.
I would do this, but the "unlimited" plan from my carrier limits you to 3mbps down/1.5 mbps up.
Im upper middle class. Not worth the hassle. I like having cable so i can watch fox new as well
Three used to offer unlimited tethering (they still do with little workaround..)
>limiting/blocking/etc tethering
What's this meme? Can't Amerimutts tether their phones freely?
No reason it can't work. Good luck getting a phone that fits into that $60 bill that will last a few years, or won't drive you insane though.
>Can't Amerimutts tether their phones freely?
SURPRISE: American corporations are powerful and greedy.
No, most of the time, you can't tether freely. you can with T-Mobile and I think Virgin but that's about it.
>only 60
I pay 20 a month and i get TV programs with it
>>only pay like $60/mo for your internet
i know you guys have it bad but holy shit 60 here gets you gigabit plus tv
that upload is twice what i get... on my home connection
>60
lol third-worlders
my country gives you unlimited 4G data for 18$/mo
Wow, that sucks. Do they sell phones with the OS all fucked up to prevent tethering?
>claims to like fox news
>expects to be taken seriously
It's not bad for general use, but I like having a little more upload bandwidth for streaming.
because you forgot
>hit the data cap of your """unlimited""" plan in 3 hours
No, the OS remains intact. They can just tell how you're using the internet from their end, so if you continue tethering, they'll either cut you off, bill you extra or slow you down to nearly unusable speeds.
It's not that they prevent tethering, rather they just set a limit to how much you can do it
if it's got a cap, it's not unlimited
throttling after a certain amount isn't unlimited, the throttle is literally a limitation
I used to do just this back when unlimited was unlimited.
Dorothy best girl
Please tell that to every service provider in the US.
Pray tell what cable news should i be watching?
none
Don't tell me, tell Verizon.
K i will keep watching fox news
This is actually very common here in Finland where we have dirt cheap mobile data plans and good 4g coverage. For houses that have no fiber connections it is often the best option
I pay the equivalent of $30 for my home internet, unlimited and $50 for 10GB of 4G a month. Home connection is faster.
because a home internet service is cheaper faster and unlimited, and a phone service is like 50bucks for like 3 gigs per month at speeds that barely ever even remotely reach 1MB/s
>home internet service is cheaper
not always. where I am it's insanely expensive because Cox has a sort of monopoly over the area.
How would they even now if you're tethering? It's not like there's anything special about the IP traffic of tethered devices.
I only pay $25 for 50meg speeds.
It does work, but mobile internet isn't particularly good, with spotty traffic, high latency and an IP address that might change at any time. If you don't care about any of that there's no problem, but you're also a pleb.
