Im running a Xeon on an LGA775 board right now. I bought the CPU like 2 years ago; its a 3.17 GHz, and I got it for $25. I ran it at 3.8 GHz for a while
There might actually be mobos with support for newer CPUs too since I recall there being multiple companies making alternative chipsets. I didn't check though since I just assumed Nvidia had the best and that was the last good one they made.

Looks like there's the the Intel Xeon X5492 which seems even better if you can get it to run on those motherboards. It's $75 on ebay vs the $300 of the QX9770.

Pretty crazy, I wonder if the Nvidia chipset boards could handle it though. A lot of the reviews said overclocking crashes the board because it gets so hot and that Xeon runs 200MHz above the best Core2Extreme.

Yeah. You should also get 2x4GB of DDR3 2000 CAS 9 since the mobo only supports 8GB. I recommend getting 2x4GB over 4x2GB since the memory controllers in these Nvidia boards is shit and might not even work with 4 sticks of RAM at 2000 MHz. You'll probably have to OC the RAM in the BIOS though since it'll probably default to 1333 or something.

These boards have 3 way SLI btw. The Titan Xp or EVGA 1080 Ti kingpin would be the best though. If you mean for older operating sytems like Windows XP then the Titan Black is the last one with official XP drivers but XP doesn't even get browser updates anymore.
Btw, the Titan Black does have drivers for XP 64-bit too which is pretty neat.
