How do you feel about Linux not being able to break 3% of desktop market share?

How do you feel about Linux not being able to break 3% of desktop market share?

GNU/Linux*

Fucking casual.

*Linux

Do you want it to ever break that 3%? Because you're not helping here.

It might not ever be a popular mainstream OS and that's fine.

I don't care. I'm fine with how it is right now

Why would I care about increased market share? That just means more normies shitting the thing up.

>he doesn't want better software
>he doesn't want better DRIVERS
I feel ashamed to use some of the same software and likely hardware as you.

My drivers work just fine. Get a ThinkPad, m8. Even QubesOS worked out of the box.

>software
The only thing I don't have is a desktop version application for Evernote. I just use their website though, so it's no big deal. I'm sure I could tinker with the .exe in WINE and get it to work, but I do t care that much.

Look man, I'm not saying Linux should strive for normie status. But if a single distro somehow reached OS X level marketshare it would become a pleasure to use, not a chore like right now.

>creating flamewar threads

are you implying that market share has a correlation with how "pleasurable" an OS is to use? That's fucking stupid, since Windows shits all over Mac in terms of market share and it's a piece of shit

>chore to use

I don't understand this. It werks out of the box 95% of the time. Whenever my family asks me to fix their computers, I just install Ubuntu and give them their computer back.

I dont understand the usability argument. I think the majority of the reason it's not more mainstream is that it's not OEM for pre-builts or laptops and companies that develop business applications don't put out Linux versions.

You need to read "Major Linux Problems
on the Desktop". It's not a meme, I've personally encountered MOST of the problems in that article.

Android with its Linux kernel is the future of personal computing.

Arbitrary "desktop" sub-categories only exist to make Windows users feel good when the platform is already obliterated in terms of device and time share in terms of personal computing.

You can't use a smartphone like a PC.
You can't even use a tablet like a PC.

Stop spewing BS.

gannoo slash linux

Wow, you and one other guy have brain damage of some sort. That must mean Linux is bad.

half that windows is older versions
you can pretty much double the competitors marketshare

Haven't read the article and yet you can probably do the same with Windows.

Because users aren't competent to operate Windows, back up Windows, fix Windows, keep Windows safe against viruses, and even fucking know what they got extracted into Windows program folders or what they autorun or whatever. Or how to allocate disk space.

The very issue is plebs can't handle computers unless they're set up like Android where they just CAN'T really do much but install / uninstall for sandboxed apps. And that's all they can handle. Which is what personal computing has moved to anyhow. Android.

>implying they won't upgrade to Win10 once new hardware comes out in 2020 that can't boot Win7

It's been roughly a decade since Linux was a pain to use on a desktop. Even then, 99% of the problems were solved with a quick Google search.

Maybe you've run into problems lately, but I doubt it. I've got at least a dozen tech illiterate close friends and family that use Linux for their daily drivers and none of them have problems.

No, you idiot, he has an article about Windows too (and he hates Windows 10). But most of the problems with Linux that he talks about are problems with the OS itself!

Of course you can. Open web browser app, do your web browser stuff. Open porn app, watch porn. Open communication app and communicate. Open logistics app and scan boxes that arrived.

If you have more work, you get to use the new fancy company web app for it.

This is how normies will work now. Of course they're already spending their free time overwhelmingly on Android, too, and far more people use Android than use Windows.

>gnome : laggy, retard agencement, waste vertical space, waste too much ram
>kde : ugly, buggy, incoherent, 2009 "Vista" style DE
>xfce/lxqt : old as fuck, still buggy
>budgie : it's still gnome, better agencement tho
>deepin : deep in your throat chinease botnet
>i3 and other "look I'm hack3r DE" : lol

And on top of that you add Wayland, Mir and Unity waste of time/effort.
And again on top of that you add shitty Nvidia/Amd driver.

Linux on desktop was a mistake

Every time a major new distro release comes out, I have the urge to try it and often do so. And every single time I come crawling back to Windows.

(BTW the same thing happens with a lot of FOSS, because it's no professionally developed - meaning near-zero QA. In fact Firefox had the same effect on me before version 57.)

> better software
GNU/Linux already has better and non-malicious software than Windows

1% has 90% of the monies, and 2% has 100% of the GNU+Linux.
Feels good bein L337

I don't know who "he" is, but my own experience with Linux tells me the exact opposite of whatever e-celebrity you're quoting. The fact that his criticism is of "Linux" tells me everything I need to know. There are a thousand different distros, it's nearly impossible to come out with unified criticism of every distro.

The only reason I could see someone preferring Windows is if they gaym or have proprietary software that isn't available on Linux.

What problems do you have with Linux?

Couldn't give two fucks m8.

/thread

I definitely believe you when you say you want to try Linux, yeah. You're not just lying to make it seem like you've actually tried the system.
>Foss has 0 QA
Right, because propriety systems like Windows and osx never have crippling security or usability issues

>a free, unmarketed, virtually unknown operating system getting half the marketshare of an overmarketed overrated overpriced piece of crap
feels really good my man

> But most of the problems with Linux that he talks about are problems with the OS itself!
All I read so far (up to the whining about pulseaudio) is bollocks. PA has been solid on a dozen different machines for >5 years now.

Meanwhile there were USB sound cards that fucked up for me on WIndows and a whole slew of proprietary audio control centers had vastly different settings and options and no echo cancellation builtin either and then even varied between versions of Windows - do I get to blame the Windows audio subsystem as immature?

Just nonsense.

>Guy makes Distro
>Distro becomes as popular as Windows
>Guy needs more staff
>Guy needs more programmers
>Guy needs building to put staff and programmers in
>Guy needs to pay staff
>Guy starts selling Distro
>Guy puts backdoors in distro and receives payoffs
>Guy starts datamining
>
>
>Distro is...a...pleasure...to use...

yeah...

Windows
Mac OSX
iOS
Android

all these high marketshare OS's are fucking great..I'll stick to the idealism and co-operative nature of Linux.

>virtually unknown
???

Even normies know Linux exists.

PS: References like "I heard on the internet that some people on the internet had issues with xy"... yea, that's happening to Windows for everything.

You think that turd was able to suspend / unsuspend properly? Nope. Neither with the original nor updated drivers it worked, nor did BIOS updates. Just silent fail. On two different machines no less. No problems on Linux.

And then on yet two other machines it wakes up when press the mouse. The setting is disabled, but it does. Windows is a complete fuckup. No point in complaining about Linux's suspend support. It only doesn't work on one machine. And I can also claim you can easily find thousands of other people complaining about Windows suspend / hibernate issues.

How do you feel about windows not being able to break 0.1% of the next gen platform market share?

>OP gets blown the fuck out every time these types of threads are made
it always amuses me

>Assuming that OP didn't just want to start a flamewar

Oh I'm sure he did see But now it's a cozy campfire, like it always ends up being

If you feel at all confused, just look how fucking beautiful my desktop is...

Arch Linux
AwesomeWM
comfy x220

..why would I prefer windows over this?

I don't even understand what's the appeal of Linux outside of a work environment. Why would you ever want to go through more trouble to do the same things you can do with a single click in Windows. It's kind of retarded and pretentious.

Whats a computer?

Root install windows to BTRFS

What's amatter? The source code is available.

>a single click
This is very much an over-exaggeration.

also, you probably think of command-line interfaces when you think of linux. While this is certainly used a lot, there are plenty of desktop user interfaces that offer a more 'point-and-click' experience, similar to what you would have on Windows.
Linux also does not spy on you like how windows does, especially in windows 10. That's a major reason why some use it.

Im not that CIA nog but I get enough pooling, snapshots, checksums, and multi-device spanning at work I just want to shitpost

You are so naive have you ever heard of systemd or wikileaks?

Every machine that has ever failed on me has died by disk.
I like it when things just werk.

Everything gets checksums.

> Why would you ever want to go through more trouble to do the same things you can do with a single click in Windows.
More like: Why would you use dozens of clicks in Windows to do a thing you can do with a single click or command in Linux?

Ultimately if you know both, Linux is almost always easier.

Apart from that, Microsoft is forcing updates and telemetry and other shit I really don't want. I wouldn't let a housekeeper that acts like Microsoft work for me, ever, so why would I let Microsoft manage my even more sensitive (as compared to the average house content) data on the computer?

And it's not meaningfully enabling things I DO want like RAID5. Write performance on parity pools on Windows is a fucking joke - what the hell were they thinking, that nobody needs to do the main industry standard thing to mitigateh the pretty frequently occurring drive failures (once you have a bunch of drives).

> It's kind of retarded and pretentious.
No, Windows is ultimately the retarded choice. It's maybe easier FOR YOU because you already know it or something, but it's really retarded for most tasks.

Not that I mind using it to just shitpost in public here or whatever, it doesn't matter, but I don't trust it with my accounts or even family photos.

It may have 3% *desktop* market share, but it dominates the server market share. It also dominates the phone industry since Android is essentially a Linux distribution.

The only reason Windows has got so much Desktop Market share is because it had better lawyers than Apple. And, it's made for plebians. Linux is made for developers. It doesn't need to advertise itself like Windows does because it's not trying to sell anything - programmers will try to seek it out of their own accord.

>more trouble to do the same things you can do with a single click in windows

Maybe 20 years. Everything works well now. I put my family on it so that I'm not stuck deleting viruses and fixing Blue Screens of Death all the time. Most normies live through their browser, so the user experience is identical on Linux.

>Wikileaks

u wot?

>SystemD

It's cancer and there's plenty of distros that run without it.

How do you feel about GNU/Linux being the most popular operating system in the world?

makes sense to me, there are no games on linux

I feel fine.
Linux already dominate everything else, so it's nice to see that something still keeps itself out of the penguin's reach.

But if microsoft keep fucking it up like they're doing, the penguin might reach up.

>not being able to break 3%
Remember a year ago when it "wasn't able to break 2%"?

Not that Linux becoming mainstream is a good thing

I don't give a fuck

I like it when retards bring up the web server argument in the context of desktop market share like anyone gives a shit, all while giving off the vibe that they think they're not a plebeian just because they took the extra 10 minutes to install Ubuntu or Mint instead of Windows on their glorified cloud content consumption appliances.

> caring what normies use
I really don't. I would like GNU/Linux to get better because I do care about my own experience using it. There's millions and millions of computers out there. 2-3% is enough to keep it alive.

Your arguments are true yet totally irrelevant. A laptop with RemixOS isn't a tablet or a smartphone, neither is a Chromebook. It's not the Android interface that's got the potential to replace both Windows and GNU/Linux, it's the vast amount of apps available to it. RemixOS has it's own special desktop and window manager and taskbar, it's somewhat like a linux distribution that runs Android software.

If you still don't get it: Just imagine some OS that looks and feels just like Windows but it runs Android software instead of Windows software.

I really do see some kind of OS that's got a PC-style windowmanager and desktop which runs Android apps as something that could easily become a very real threat to Windows on the desktop. And it will probably be a later version of ChromeOS because most people just buy a computer and use whatever OS is pre-installed on it.

oh, you're so wrong. The steam catalog has so many games for linux/"steamOS" now it's ridiculous. If you said this just 3 years ago then I'd totally agree - but that's changed.

We're giving off the elitist vibe because we are elites.

Our operating system is more free than yours. It demonstrably has no backdoors and it can be proven. While yours, does not. You can't even look at your own source code - the NSA could be looking through your screen right now and you wouldn't get the wiser.

I don't give a fuck about normalfags and their decisions.

Android doesn't even have the GNU coreutils, it's more of Android/Linux than GNU/Linux

Please, you're a consumer like the rest of them, the only difference being that the trough you feed from confirms to some deluded has-been's ethical standards from the VAX age. You aren't responsible for that "freedom" you treasure, all you did was install something different on your computer that you can basically master with a few Google searches and a little bit of time and motivation. GNU/Linux hasn't taken a drop of tech literacy in a long time, in 2017 it practically spoonfeeds you. No need to worry about drivers, installing software is effortless with package managers holding your hand, everything is excellently documented. It's certainly a breeze compared to the Solaris, IRIX and HP-UX systems I often use at home.
>You can't even look at your own source code - the NSA could be looking through your screen right now and you wouldn't get the wiser.
It's pretty funny watching you posture yourself as someone who knows shit about technology in the same sentence that demonstrates you don't even know how to monitor network traffic or know what reverse engineering is.
I honestly doubt you, like most other LARPing privacy activists, have ever audited a significant piece of free software in your life.

>drivers
My drivers work just fine

>software
I have everything I need

...

couldnt care less, same way i dont give a fuck about your autism OP

Hey Sup Forums
I m a marketing student persuing my masters and learning coding (in depth) i understand fully the tast of a front end develloper of not more.
Im wondering what is more useful here! Applying for jobs as a marketer witj a masters degree, or applying as a skilled front end develloper with a degree as a marketer! With career is a better choices guys.
Im realy lost! And i dont know of not having a degree in computer science is an obstacle
