Because Skype is worse and setting up a Mumble server isn't as convenient

Bump

there are more programs than that...

>dumb normies
because they're dumb normies

>everybody else
because the normies use it

communications clients suffer from the network effect hard

You guys have this thread just about everyday.

The smaller ones are not convenient for normies, and the larger ones (i.e. Skype) are more buggy.

No shit there are more applications, use some god damned reading comprehension.

name a functional alternative

go ahead, I'll wait

Steam group chat

This

>name a functional alternative
An image board.

mumble
teamspeak
ventrillo
etc.
basically any voice chat client you can imagine.

IRC Guide git.teknik.io/mayfrost/guides/src/master/IRC.md

i might actually use it more if it wasn't for those awful cringeworthy loading messages, hate having to see "SZECHUAN SAUCING YOUR FIDGET SPINNER! ALL YOUR BASE ARE BELONG TO US!" every time i start it up

What you guys fail to mention is how easy it is to use and share images video chat at no cost creating your own private server and all. I dont like how big discord is but boy is it easy to use.

Because it's what everyone else uses.

Are you being an autist on purpose or what?

>user joins
>RUH ROH! LOOKS LIKE LE GAMER user HAS JOINED!! xD EPIC NYAN CATS FOR YOU AND DON'T TAKE AN ARROW TO THE KNEE!!!

Also Tox, I use qTox but the webcam support ins't that good, i haven't been able to get it working on linux nor windows with different webcams. But there are some other clients, one has to have good webcam support, i'm just lazy to try them.

Matrix

teamspeak / mumble for voice
xmpp / irc for text
also riot / matrix

>hur dur my thats what faggot friends use
None of my friends use discord shit

because it just werks

oh, you mean like Tox? it even support your faggot emojis since i know your soul would brake in pieces without that thinking emoji you masturbate so much to.

It werks and other people use it
That's what people care about

Suckless sscall

IRC

I don't know why they don't use the superior Rocket instead.

Rocketchat

Easy to create and join chatrooms. No client needed and everything is available just by clicking a link.

mah nigga

I'm not going to try and convince everyone to stop using discord and use my special snowflake freetard alternative only I care about.

Discord has better sound than all of those.

>90% use the same codec
MINE IS BETTER

>muh theoretically sound improvement.
yeh right, they nearly all use the same codec.
and those softwares allow higher bitrates than discord.

I dunno senpai, but having played MMOs since Everquest 1 came out and trying all of the major voip clients, Discord is the best one I've tried so far.

Explain to me why Skype sounds like shit most of the time

this

>skype
You must be 18 years and older to post on this website

Nice rebuttal

its more like the opposite.
everyone is trying to convince me to stop using TS for their shitty software.
it started with skype
then they wanted curse voice
now they want discord

teamspeak always worked flawlessly. i see no reason to switch.

Also, skype wasn't mentioned (directly).
Skype uses a different codec and server structure sweatheart.
why would anyone compare skype and discord though?
botnet vs. botnet.

Because they're both massively popular VoIP services. Skype is a dedicated VoIP service that somehow manages to have much worse sound than Discord.

No you haven't.
Install mumble

Because people can't grab your IP through it and boot you offline, dumbass. And Discord doesn't force you to link your account to your Microsoft account.

Discord devs are cringy as fuck. Their ads on their YouTube page are even worse

I have though.

rocketchat/riot/matrix

Than mumble yeah nah mumble is the best VoIP client it just doesn't do everything else discord does.

That hasn't been my experience. Admittedly, I haven't used Mumble in like 4 years, but when I used it the sound quality wasn't as good as Discord's is now and occasionally there was robotvoice, which I've never had a problem with in Discord.

depends on your settings really if your net can support it the audio quality of mumble is unmatched I use both mumble and discord discord is better than some others Ill give you that but mumble is simply the best that I have seen and heard.

None of my friends are willing to use an obscure FOSS chat client with me. There's no point in using something like tox if no one else uses it.

Is there any script to use this for a chat group?

you can start using it by opening invitation link

>open source

no thanks

>no features
Just even mumble is better than teamspeak even within the realm of voice only

This is great

Teamspeak and Discord use the exact same codec they sound literally the same

exactly this, I don't see any fucking reason why all the normies are switching to discord when teamspeak literally works flawless and has everything you need, it's just their stupid mind filled with bullshit that wants to go with the mainstream, fuck them.

And for me it also started with skype, I ahve no problem with skype at all, but it's dead, they ruined skype when they sold it to M$ and now it's unusable for Linux, the legacy was the only good skype version Linux had to offer, now all these web-wrappers suck dick adn don't work as smooth as you expect them to work.

For the /csg/ bargains

>doesn't realize that discord does more than voice
>doesn't understand that people want something easy to use
>doesn't understand that people want to use something they don't need to download
yep, it's definitely other people that are stupid and not you. this is a very obvious case of projection

>doesn't understand that people want to use something they don't need to download
I don't know anyone that uses Discord in their browser unless the desktop version fucks up their audio again.

Go and shill on reddit, we all know that there is nothing wrong or even complicated with teamspeak or mumble, the people are just too retarded to give it a serious try and discord looks like the kindergarten of all voip softwares, point and click at it's best, it's made for idiots.

>there would be no downside for me in getting the source code along with the binaries but I just want to be cucked as much as possible

Please point me to a non-buggy and/or non-proprietary service, that lets me communicate with the people I choose via a *free as in no mone* server, which only people I choose get to join. Thanks!

Mumble

ease of use and marketing
I'm essentially forced to use what my friends use, and it was a big deal a few years ago to ditch skype

This thread is every reason why Sup Forums will never succeed at getting Linux to be mainstream.

Is it ? Besides "muh friends use it" , Mumble is the only viable option

I don't know why anyone would download the client as it's literally the web app in a dedicated instance of chromium with additional spyware that gathers a list of all running processes in the background.

Because people use it. Also, it works.

Last time I checked mumble doesn't let me host a public server 24/7 for free

Carrier pigeons

nice malware

Than why do you care? You're proving him right about you being an autist

It literally does though

i used qtox for tox awhile ago and within one month it uploaded fucking 10gb of data unknowingly on a simple chat program with no images or videos sent

kind of soured me to the experience

>nothing complicated about mumble
I can tell you've never attempted to get someone to join a mumble server. Mumble is complicated nonsense.

any good servers

t. has never used steam group chat
>no individual volume control
>no convenient admin tools
>audio quality is absolute shit
>randomly can decide to not work with certain people
>have to start calls and add people instead of joining a server

Discord took over because it just werks, has great sound, and is normie friendly

t. hopped from mumble to steam to curse to discord

I don't have friends

guy with a mumble server here.
its a pain in the ass. every time anybody new joins I have to connect to their computer via teamviewr just to fix their fucking mic settings.
Dont even think of letting someone on a phone into your server. audio comes out of their speaker and straight back into the mic without any filtering.
a typical experience for me is to sit there listening to screeching all day.

once mumble is set up correctly though its fucking amazing.

Are you an idiot?

Discord uses Opus. Opus is GOAT when it comes to lossy audio codecs.

Does mumble have video calling?

No, it's VoIP for gaming

Then how is it an alternative for Discord which is more general purpose?

I think it's because advertising and gaymer UI appeal works.

>setting up a Mumble server isn't as convenient
But it is super easy. Set password in ini, connect to server, configure it basically as you wish.

>general purpose
No one outside your gamer weeb friends cares about discord

cutegang

What's buggy about it? I don't use that it intensively but my msn group switched to IRC then to discord and now that we've grown a bit older we've all got jobs so don't use it as much so I don't notice any bugs.

>Why do people use this buggy, proprietary mess?
Because is really easy of install servers and amazing usability. Mumble is dead because 99% of world population dont know what is "ini"

> Because is really easy of install servers
Basically installs with an installer or a package, the same way you install basically everything on your OS.

Discord doesn't install any easier.

> Mumble is dead because 99% of world population dont know what is "ini"
Apart from murmur being ridiculously easy to configure (easier than a great number of dedicated game servers even today): 99.9% aren't setting up servers, they're connecting to one.

Nah, it's probably basically marketing and branding reasons primarily why people haven't even tried mumble for the most part. They just went with Discord because they heard it was a less annoying Skype or something.

It doesn't matter that Mumble is easy to use. Discord is easier.

Discord has the "it just werks" and intuitive design that normies like, and the thing that normies like are the ones to become popular. It's easy as that.
Are we going to have a "Why do people use facebook?" thread next?

Nah, Mumble is easier.

Unsurprisingly, most people haven't tried Mumble anyhow, they just got pulled into Discord by gaming buddies or whatever that looked for a Skype replacement.

People just flock to what seems popular, and it might get popular from another angle originally.

>Mumble is easier.
You're really, really reaching here.

> Discord has the "it just werks" and intuitive design that normies like
So does Mumble.

> and the thing that normies like are the ones to become popular
Yea, normies are the majority, they define what's popular.

Among working alternatives it usually has little to do with whether something works and more to do with how effective marketing for x or y is.

I've never had it break, crash, or lower connection, it runs on practically everything, and it's easy for normal friends to setup.

Also my work uses it

But it is. There are guides on Discord explaining where to find the menu button in that UI.

But eh, I heard "Skype is easier" before, too. Neither makes any sense, but you can't separate "prettier" and "what I learned" from actually easier with most people.

Normiebook friends use it because it's easy to add people to groups, chat functions are good and it's great for things like tabletop rug groups or general use across different games
