That's how kids communicate as far as I know. That's why a lot of magazines for kids have hiragana above or besides a kanji character, to help them know what it's supposed to say and to learn the kanji at the same time.
Japanese use kanji because of tradition and it'll be hard to get rid of it any soon. It probably won't go anywhere.
