What obstacles are there for apple to start making desktops/laptops with their own chips?

what obstacles are there for apple to start making desktops/laptops with their own chips?

Shareholders

why? wouldnt it be good for apple?

/thread

i've often thought about this too, apples a11 processor is already on par with i5 processors and welll ahead of qualcomm

>being this fucking deluded

ease of software compatibility, mostly

they used to run on powerpc, which inarguably were fantastic chips (back when they were actually being developed) but likewise inarguably made cross-development between x86 architecture and powerpc annoying. making their systems difficult to develop for also reduced the amount of malware, since criminals/vandals/shit disturbers/etc always go for the low hanging fruit. and it greatly increased the barrier of entry for people who want to fiddle with wonky custom builds.

the obstacle would be in convincing non-casual users and developers that going back to the "apple is an island" philosophy is a good thing; it's a problem that came close to killing apple off for good at one point. apple left powerpc for a reason.

do you think this could change with the fact that there is now a huge apple ecosystem in iPhone, iPad as well as Macs?

already we're seeing apple moving towards universal apps across the three devices.

Oh wow I hope is b8

not sure why you find it so hard to believe, i doubt either of you have used any A11 device and probably not even A10.

No.
That could cause a massive migration away from the Mac if they break x86 compatiblity.
PowerPC is still alive, granted, not in consumer market.

Shareholders don’t like risk and they won’t be on board unless you can prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that such a huge change would result in increased profit. Also Apple’s main moneymaker is the mobile devices which is why their desktops have been lagging.

>That could cause a massive migration away from the Mac if they break x86 compatiblity.

They could just make their own x86 chips.

>They could just make their own x86 chips.
They can't, crapple lacks x86 license.

Wew I forgot about that Jewish bullshit. Apple used to be on PPC, they should go back, compatibility be damned. It’s not as if they’ve shown any care for compatibility when it comes to their phones.

They already did and it failed

lol

You need to stop looking at goybench """benchmarks"""

why?

No one wants to deal with appstore restrictions

Software compatability. Mac OS is already bad enough as it is, iOS on a laptop would fucking bomb so hard it would make that gay round apple laptop look like a true feat of engineering.

>They could just make their own x86 chips.
They would face lawsuits from Intel and AMD

>the obstacle would be in convincing non-casual users and developers that going back to the "apple is an island" philosophy is a good thing
"Apple is an island" was only a thing because back in the day, interoperability with Apple computers and networks and PC systems and networks was rather poor.

Since OS X, Apple computers have had more or less the same amount of interoperability. From a typical user standpoint, all that has changed since the transition to x86 is now you can run Windows on Apple hardware.
