if you want a modern laptop get the x1 carbon then
Grayson Young
Thinkpad t430 with 1600x900 screen like $200 off of eBay at most. No reason to pay more for a laptop
Joshua James
ThinkPad t420 with 8gb ram, an upgraded screen and an egpu. T420 > T430
Luke Butler
not true t430 is better. 3gen i5 brings some good shit, like performance/battery optimizations. and egpu still works also, is more modern looking and the keyboard is still acceptable I had both anyway I would go for a clevo/msi gaming shit for that also look at xiaomi mi notebook air 2017

Instead of buying an ancient thinkpad, or a modern turd chinapad or botnetbook, get a System76 Galago Pro - system76.com/laptops/galago
It comes with Linux installed and is fully compatible withany autism distros you would prefer, of course, and contributes to non-shit things that are Linux and privacy/anonymity related. The Galago Pro is thin and light but powerful and uses the latest hardware so you finalyl can get a lower power i7 and have it be a true quad core w/HT since its the 8000 series. Long battery life, light weight, and good modern features are all included.
You didn't mention gaming so I figure you don't need a GPU or anything but if you did want to game on it you could even pick up a Thunderbolt 3 GPU enclosure and pop a desktop GPU in it if you wanted.
So yeah, its the better alternative to just about anything that doesn't require a dGPU.

Xiaomi.

Aren't they just a reseller of some other companies laptops? I'm still here the battery life isn't that great and I'm not sure how good the build quality and keyboard are either. Mind you I want to believe. They say found a way to disable Intel's management engine and they offer their drivers free on a Ubuntu PPA and in the Aur. It looks like thar laptops are in some middle ground between a business and consumer machine. 1080p IPS display is standard but no trackpoint. they all have ethernet jacks but no option for docking station and only for cell batteries.
>You didn't mention gaming so I figure you don't need a GPU or anything but if you did want to game on it you could even pick up a Thunderbolt 3 GPU enclosure and pop a desktop GPU in it if you wanted. I could probably fit that in my laptop bag but for me "laptop gaming" is mostly emulators and roguelikes. at most resuming a game of Minecraft or Dwarf Fortress doing a trip.

They look custom made to me.
Blake Wilson
t420 is inferior. The only thing It has going against the t430 is an average cheaper price
Dominic Hughes
The particular one I linked there I think is one of the first semi-custom variants due to requests for fabrication. Yeah, they use Clevo based rebuilds for some other laptops but those arenot shitty (same backing for brands like Sager etc); some models are better than others of course but tons of people use their hardware as a base etc... but the build quality can at least be on par with many of the big name types like lenovo, dell, and HP consumer models - if not better! This is not to say a certain individual model may or may not be better or worse etc.. but just on average.
Also, as I said before System76 is attempting to get custom made laptops more than being a whitebox rebrander, now that they've been in business for awhile. The Galago Pro is one of the first down that path . It is built on a full aluminum unibody chassis and has a backlit keyboar. The standard display on the Galago Pro is way above 1080p, its a 3200x1800 13" display.
If you want a trackpoint nobody but lenovo is going to have it, and docking stations you can use any Thunderbolt 3 docking station you want (or any USB3.1 if you wish to not use Thunderbolt port etc). Battery is a 35wh offering but conidering that this is a unibody aluminum laptop that is meant for portability and weighs less than 3lb, that's kind of what one expects; reports suggests that it does provide long hours of usage though. This is a competitor for MacBook/ish laptops and other ultrabooks without discrete GPUs, that offers something similar while instead supporting Linux.
If you have really specialized needs or something that's one thing but in reference to the original post it didn't seem like something that would especially require an all day road warrior hot swap battery capability.
Carson Thomas
The only other Linux focused custom laptops out there that I'm aware of at the moment are those from Purism, but those are more expensive and less powerful using older hardware in many cases (ie they use skylake platform low voltage i7 dual cores, 1080P is their display max etc) They're more for those who are willing to give things up in order to get the best Stallman-esc freedom, even if it means modern hardware or paying more.
I suggest kitting out a System76 GalagoPro w/ the i7-8550U , 16gb of RAM (or user upgrade at a later time if you wish; I don't believe the solder), and pick up the NVMe SSD . The latter two you can add yourself later I'm pretty sure (double check before you buy) but make sure that you get the better CPU as that you won't be able to alter later yourself and its a nice upgrade for a modest price. Call them about upgrading the hardware yourself and accessibility (ie to make sure nothing is soldered or uses a shitty connector, unlike most big names I am almost sure this is the case) and if you're comfortable you can swap in more RAM, replace the basic SATA SSD with a NVMe model, and/or add a secondary HDD/SSD if you want. However, their prices for upgrades are not outlandish unlike many others (ie you'd probably spend around $100 to get an 8gb stick of DDR4 SODIMM by itself etc..)
Jonathan Fisher
you seem to care about image, so a macbook it is then. Good luck doing anything useful with it after a year though
Aaron Ross
Used HP Elitebook from 2012-2015. You'll pay a few hundred at most, have a modern laptop with a modern look and modern hardware.
>Good luck doing anything useful with it after a year though Why would you say something so fucking stupid?
Jonathan Wood
>USB c Pretty neat.
Brandon Gomez
My laptop is just a vim typewriter and a portable fapping station. I don't need a super hi rez screen, just a good keyboard and long battery life. After that I just like it to be able to be a decent computer to watch anime and play Doom mods. Neither of those require extremely high DPI and 16 GB of RAM. I'm also an i3 user so 720p can be livable for me on a portable machine.
Did System 76 start hiring shills or you just a fanboy? It looks like it might be a good laptop but short of some nitpicky criterias of mine.
Dominic White
Galago Pro's battery life is ass. Like five hours tops.
Caleb Kelly
lenovo cheep as fuck with amd graphics, mine was under 300 new

Go with an XPS 13 and get a lap desk for when you're at home It's the comfiest, most aesthetic laptop I've ever owned short of the Macbook Air

I'm not the guy you are replying to, but are you OP or someone who wants something similar? Because it really sounds like you need T420 to me.

As an owner of a T430, I can say it does everything I need and more. >VGA connector for older monitors >2 USB 3.0 ports >amazing build quality
Eli Jackson
hows the t420/30 with games?
Jonathan Cox
I'm not okay. I probably will get some old ThinkPad unless they have Chinese spyware which I won't rule out because Lenovo or dirty chinks. My biggest concern buying used or refurbished laptop, especially one that's 5 years old, is getting a spent battery they're only last 3 hours tops and genuine ones for the really old models are getting hard to come by. I'll most likely get myself a t450 or t460 assuming I get a ThinkPad and not a latitude or elitebook.
Xavier Roberts
> I'm not okay Meant to say that I'm not the op Google Voice typing is a piece of shit.
Jacob Sullivan
I think you need to think about what you want a bit. Because when you say:
>My laptop is just a vim typewriter and a portable fapping station. I don't need a super hi rez screen, just a good keyboard and long battery life.
You are not going to get a lot of answers besides Thinkpad alternatives.
Runs ur minekwaff and any emulators 60fps, the t430

Do you like the display? Is IPS good? Is it ready to go under $200? I can understand buying a half gig Samsung 850 ssd for about $140 but besides that I'd like a third generation Intel core i5 or i7 and 8GB of RAM. Under 200?
Pic unrelated. Have a stock t61 but the display is busted so I just ssh in at the moment.
John Howard
This system76 laptop reviews well and comes out ahead of dell XPS 13 in value. Apparently battery is crap though and us keyboard only.
I will continue wait for mature maybe cheaper Ryzen apu

I bought a used refurbished from hp and the track pad was broken. Theyve been holding onto it for a month and stopped updating the progress.
Screw HP.

Better off buying them used and just fixing anything up yourself, if they even need to be fixed.
