Are WD reds worth it when you just a cheap sake whom just needs storage?

Why Red 8 TB instead of Red 10TB?
The latter use half as much power and are 20% faster

Reds are made for hoarding even when they are just greens

This HUS726060ALA641 shit refurbished (fom youdrive) is cheap as fuck for European prices (basically same price as a 4TB HGST)

Should I go for it?

Also looks like a lot of shady dealers sell them in bulks, are they retired for some reason?

are 5400-5900 rpm drives noticeably quieter than 7200 or is this a meme?
also is seagate Sup Forums-approved?

No
No
And never trust Sup Forums for anything

>/hsg/ refugees
Where is /hsg/?

Last threads died under 10 replies so I guess they stop trying

Depends on the drive I guess. The 5900 RPM WD Red drives are noticeably quieter than the 7200 RPM ironwolf drives. But I don't know how loud the 5900 RPM ironwolf drives are.

Seagate is fine I guess. Always have backups, and never trust any brand.

what are some good ebay sellers or sites or whatever to get big ass cheap drives

Got tired of fucking with linux/freenas/etc so I bought this. Currently running 2x4TB in RAID 1.

I have a WD Green ("Intellipower" aka 5400), it's noticeably quieter than a WD Black of similar age.

discord.gg/TmbWZsc
Well I didn't see anyone mention this in the /hsg/ Discord

I use a little home server so I don't know what the fuck that thing actually do vs a regular debian server, care to explain?

If you want your shit to survive long term then Raid+ multiple backups/redundancy + UPS is mandatory. Keeping your backups offline is a good way to make them last longer/reduce chance of power spike/surge killing it. Your data is only as good as the foundation on which it's built (your server). If something get's fucked with it, there's a 90% chance the "fucked" bit got mixed in with your last backup image, rendering that image "bad". An offline archive backup of core shit, solves this problem along with a UPS to keep your raid volumes from getting hit with corruption from unplanned power failure.

i hope whoever took that picture didnt buy all of those drives from the same person.

ive still got to buy 4 more 6tb reds to move my nas to another server.

i probably should have double checked my backup connection before i left for christmas because something fucked up and i lost connection to all of my ips. pretty sure my pfsense vm or the host fucked up. when i get back im going to probably move my routing to a physical machine, still deciding what to use for it

they're loud and refurbished so you won't get as much life out of them vs. a standard drive. 6tb for 3tb price sounds tempting though

That there is called a NAS. They ain't bad. I got three but I use them for dedicated backup dumps of my main server. I keep them shutdown when not in use. One's a 12TB Raid 5 4 bay Zyzel. It holds a full backup of all server data. Another is a 2 bay 4TB Raid 0 Zyzel. It holds the archive copy of core data. Got a 3rd 2 bay Zyzel that's ready to go in the future if I need it. Just gotta add the drives.

What software do you people use on your servers? I'm considering setting up a storage server.

samba, ssh
thats all I use

SSH supports SFTP and samba for easy windows-file transport

also rtorrent for torrenting and lftp for syncing up with my seedbox

If you are murrikan just hunt for deals

Hows the ESPRESSOBin

The same people shitposting their setups and bragging about how much drive space they have tends to kill a general.

Why aren't you using your juniper firewall senpai.

i grabbed that one to try out the nsa injected firmware and see if i could exploit it but i havent had the energy to take it any further than mounting it.

its old but i might replace my pfsense stuff with it just to learn the interface, but im running like 25 vlans and it takes like half a day to rebuild the network

Windows Home Server 2011 (it's based on 2008R2,still get's regular security updates from MS so it's still good for while yet), Serviio DNLA media server, and Macrium Reflect for managing the backups of server itself. I run FTP and two web sites from it. Client pc's get backed up daily automatically by the server. Best part is that if a client is in sleep mode, the server will wake it up. run the backup, then put the client back to sleep. Backups don't take long to do either as it follows the first Full then daily Incremental rule.

kek why are you using so many vlans just for you home?

Fedora

are extracting bare drives from cheap external drives worth it? I heard that they like to use grade B drives in these things

Already had 1 of the 6 1TB drives fail in my new r710 :(. Best places to get new/cheap drives? AKA

SMB or NFS?

What kind of RAID should I use?

Raid 1/5/10 is good. Raid 1 will give you max performance w/protection but limited to two drives.Raid 5 will give most space w/protection but the write speed is reduced a bit but not read speed. Raid 10 will give a mix of both raid 1 (protection) and speed (Raid 0) but you need 4 drives of same size to work

because it doubles as a lab for many things
i last rebuilt it about a month ago when i redid my switch so i ended up losing about 10 that i wasnt really using. will probably end up bringing them back when i bring my other domains back in but ive just been too lazy

not counting the couple on the palo alto which is its own 'out of band' testing ad domain, this is what is currently on my pfsense router which is my 'main' one

This post has nothing to do with hard drives or servers

It's about a flickering LCD monitor I just ""fixed"" with an oxidized black soldering iron a couple of bootleg transformers/inverters (that came damaged, wrong voltage and 'roh' and with the plastic coming off)

And the coup de gras, the shittiest soldering job you'll ever see in your life. I think I burned the circuit board and.. I pryed those things off with a butter knife. Put in the shiesty transformers and slopped on the solder. It looked absolutely fucked up beyond all recognition. It's about the most atrocious thing you can look at

I put the monitor back together plugged it in and..

It fucking works, I fixed it.

I am now testing it and the flicker is gone on all hertz

How much would a 50tb home server cost me to setup? It should have networked access too.

not impressed by the shitty job you did, however grats that it worked. that is enough of an achievement to be proud of.

now do it again and make it look clean

what do you niggers store on these?

Why do people care about how loud a drive is in their server when the case fans will drown out even the sound of a dying drive.

Exactly why you can and should disregard posts that mention that.

raw video recordings

anime

Mix of stuff. Ripped dvds and torrents, music collection, porn, e-books, pictures, client backups,software/iso images, various docs in mixed formats.

Quite a bit, cause not only do you got the cost of the drives but if you want to back it all up you gotta add that into it as well.

Why not use freenas and zfs

I have a 2600k, a fractal r3, and several HDDs. Is there a mobo that supports ECC and is 2600k a good cpu for a server managing 20TB?

Another noob question here, what happens if a drive fails in ZFS? Do i turn off the server, take out the drive and put a new drive in and that's it and it restores the data? What's the encryption like on FreeNAS? Does it create a pool on 4 drives and then it adds a password or does it encrypt each drive? Why do you have to enable guest mode on freenas?

I would give so much for even 2 of those 8TB
I still run 2x 600GB 10k WD I got from a scrapped server, and they have hella spin time and keep going
I mostly use them to store very important data (docs, pics, music) and the ssd's are for games and windows

>shizuku edition

Weebs gonna weeb

>seller pulled drive lot off sale

anime

20TB of animu and 10TB of JAV.

Are 10 and 12TB drives mature enough to rely on? Or should I stick with 8TB models?

Is hardware raid or software raid better if I want something to work across multiple OSes such as between linux distros, or between linux and windows

>work across multiple OSes
Hardware

wouldnt my drives be hardware-locked though to whatever pcie raid card I get

Pretty much yea. Windows software RAID is actually very good now. If your windos install takes a shit, the array can easily be pulled over to the new install. Or the array will easily be recognized by a completely different windows based machine.

Fuck hardware raid.

Use unraid and you'll be fine. Just remember, you need the drives on for the pool. ZFS uses a pool for storage so you need all hard drives to be on.

same stuff any normie would store, except in a more larger, organized quantity.

Any reason to don't use this?

swizzin.ltd/

Mostly music, lectures, and backups.

You need 10TB+ for music and lectures?
And backups of what? your music and lectures?

>just bought a 5tb toshiba x300
>desktop now has 11TB of storage
>actual server has less

I'm a madman and run arch
>RuTorrent
>plex
>samba
I should probably try out alpine to see if it's any good, mostly using arch because ubuntu can't keep their rtorrent package working properly, and it simplifies things using 1 OS for all my computers

What do you do with your setup?

anime

Offboard chats kill generals

what else would you expect from a data hoarding general?

You can't exactly share 50TB. I guess you can talk about setups, but they're mostly going to be the same sets, and it really just comes down to how much money you have to afford it.

Me personally, unless they're hoarding hentai/porn related content, then I'm not interested.

Any good deals on drives you anons know about? Also, if I intend to use the drive in my PC for a bit before transferring it into my server, what would you recommend? Are reds still preferred or should I get something else if I intend to use the drive and probably have many file deletions on and so on until I plop it into the server?

Can you stop shilling your windows home server 2011, you are the only human being using it, is the fucking Vista of server systems

WD Red 2TB or 2TB Toshiba P300?
I need to change my WD greens who have been storing shit for 8 years.

Both are the same price here where I live the wd reds seem to be 5400 rpm and the toshiba one 7200 but the objective here is just to store my shit safely, mainly music, band concerts and some anime shit.

Also I can't go higher than 2TB because my motherboard is old and doesn't have UEFI, help a retard user out because I trust you guys more than some shill anandtech website review by miles.

>100-300 for the server itself
>then buy 5 10Tb drives

UEFI don't mean shit. I can't really remember the 2TB barrier being relevant unless you want to boot off the drive, and then it would be the 4K sector size which is the bootloader's business to deal with. Just get 3TB Reds unless the 4TB ones are cheaper these days. At worst, if your BIOS does throw a fit, you might need a cheap controller card for $20 or so.

Because Nas4Free is more minimal with a better GUI.

OMV also has openzfs plugin too so once that goes stable there's another option.
Also ZOL module.

>UEFI don't mean shit.
You sure? I'm pretty sure my x58 board can't "see" anything above 2tb.

>Reds are ... just greens
what did he mean by this

>look on ebay and see pic related
>its sitting on its antistatic bag so it must be practically new and just opened for the pic
>drive looks water damaged judging my the lable
>the label is fucking torn
>unspecified sticker color markers
I think I will pass on this seller.

How much are they wanting for the drive in your pick?

I've been looking for a decent case to get started with, and pic related (Fractal Design Define Mini) fractal-design.com/home/product/cases/define-series/define-mini is perfect in terms of physical size and 3.5" slots. However this case is pretty old now - would there be any issues using this today as far as hardware goes? I'd like a ECC mobo (micro ATX) ideally.

Anons, another question from me If I went with a higher capacity drive, even though my mobo is old and won't really recognize the big drives because old bios and shit, would this controller be able to fix that issue?
It's pretty cheap and seems to have good reviews.

>4 Channel 6-Port SATA 6Gb/s PCIe RAID Host Card - Vantec UGT-ST644R

Anyone run any load balanced servers? Whats the best way to keep the config of them synchronised

The i7 2600k does not support ECC memory. You might be able to find a motherboard that will work with ECC memory, bu you won't be able to make use of the ECC features.

These days you typically need a celeron, pentium, i3, or xeon e3 on consumer platforms for ECC memory. Typically the motherboards that also support ECC memory use the C2xx chipset.

I'm literally going to buy a shitty $400 laptop to run:

>cryptoshit that needs 24/7 maintenance
>web server
>scripting
>mass downloading scripting

this is a good idea in my mind Sup Forums, I'm also hoping to run a server application for a mobile app im developing so idk, more of a testing platform. Anyone think a laptop for cheap/mobile server testing/needs is a bad idea?

btw the electricity costs are not an issue at all because of reasons so that doesn't matter

UEFI only matters if the drive is over 2TB and your wanting it to be your system/boot drive. 2TB and under is fine for system drive. Use GPT on 2+TB drives in order to use the whole drive as single partition. Far as me "Shilling" WHS 2011 goes, I'm merely following this here general topic rules; "namely; what server do you guys run/software you run on it/store on it"

define r6

define r6 is way too big, hence why I was looking at the Mini...

You must be using a real old board. I know boards from 2004 had 48bit lba support. But yeah that card will allow you to use large drive

Node 804 has 10+2

Next time I upgrade my server I'll be moving on to a rack style case. My current case is limited in terms of cooling and drive bays. Current case has 9 bays but 8 are in use (left one free to aid air flow)

Yeah it's a really old computer, user. I just wanted to get new drives because mine are 8+ year old WD greens and they will for sure fail soon.

I don't want to lose my stuff, some of them I can't even find anymore online because I got them from 4shared links, kazaa and emule back in the day (lots of band stuff and some old anime and tokusatsu shit like jaspion)

Pic is one of my oldest ones, if the 3TB version works with that cheap card I guess I can go with 3TB instead of 2.
Now tell me, WD reds are more reliable than the toshiba P300? Because they are the same price here. I never had problems with WD to be honest here, their greens as you can see in the pic are still alive.

Okay got it, what else do i need? Is a fractal design r3 a good case for servers? What are some good cases for servers? I like those chassis for racks, but I don't know which to get

The only thing different is the firmware i think, makes it park the heads less.

Retard here, what's the cheapest way to have a little local network server for backup and sharing data between PCs in a network?

get literally any pos from the last 15 years and stick a bunch of hard drives in it
id recommend changing the psu though. dont want to risk a bunch of drives on a old, shittty oem psu

Would a Raspberry Pi be decently reliable and not too slow? I'm talking about real cheapo here.

>Raspberry Pi

get the fuck out

poorfag scum do NOT belong in these threads

if it didn't cost $10k+ its not a server

fuck off

((((64077994))))

Should I get a UPS for my server and which one? Or should I buy a case with a battery?

videos of me fucking my friend's wife
