Latitudes are solid machines.
>no whitelisting bullshit
>trackpad has actual buttons
>can often be found cheaper than ThinkPads
>but keyboard and trackpoint not as good as ThinkPads
looks alright, besides the chiclet keyboard
Off center keyboard, shitty chiclet keys.
Aside from that they're fine.
I'm thinking of buying a secondhand T430. Going back a few years, how might a Latitude E6430 compare to it?
Running an E5470 for the past year over here. Solid as a rock for everything I've needed it for.
Have Latitudes ever had Trackpoint? I don't think I've ever seen one.
They do.
The one in the OP doesn't seem to. I suppose it's optional.
I use a e6450 and a t430. The i7 in the Dell is a powerhouse because it has 2x the cores and cache as my T430. But I must turn off Hyperthread to keep the dell laptop at comfy temps like my thinkpad
How is the Latitude in terms of upgradability? I've heard that they are 'built solidly', but sometimes that just means 'a bastard to disassemble'.
It does though, you can even see it in the picture between the g and g keys
*g and h keys
I'd say the latitude is almost as easy to upgrade except you have to take the whole bottom cover off to get at her insides. The latitude actually has a tri metal laptop frame consisting of magnesium that all the plastic pieces screw into instead of connecting plastic to plastic so I'll give it a ton of props for that.
My latitude has the i7 2710QM or some shit and it basically is a little too much for the cooling system so it's the max cpu upgrade.
Ram I think 16gb upgradable but maybe to 64gb I've never tried.
I've also got the 9 cell battery and a couple dell docks around the house.
Cheers for the info. I found an E6440 that looks decent, so I might go for that over the ThinkPad.
Make sure you get the later models which use eDP displays instead of LVDS so you can do a 1080p IPS upgrade.
wait, LVDS is deprecated?
How can I tell what it uses?
I'm looking at one with an i5 4200M, and another with an i5 4310M. Other than that they're identical, and I can't tell what age they are.
Yes, it's been that way for years now.
You can run the serial number through Dell's site to look up what parts the machine shipped with.
You want to look for: THRH4 (eDP cable) and/or K8X8M
>Yes, it's been that way for years now.
man, i'm really out of the loop for laptop stuff
i suppose now my newest laptop is 10 years old, so i shouldn't be that surprised
Just to add, you can view the parts by putting the service tag in to dell.com
I think the 4310M has a higher chance of having eDP since it's a Haswell refresh CPU
Latitudes have had Trackpoint since 02
Thanks for the advice. I can't seem to find the serial no., nor he service tag from the photos online. The listing gives the UPC but nothing else unfortunately.
Is LVDS a significant issue? I don't plan to be doing much graphical stuff on it, so as long as the display keeps working as it should, then I'll be happy.
>Dell anything
Fuck that proprietary bios garbage.
just having LVDS isn't a problem, it just means you can replace the display with a newer eDP display
if you have no desire to replace the display, then there's no problem
What the fuck are you talking about, you can't swap LVDS for eDP. The lanes are different, the pinout number is different, EVERYTHING is different.
is that not what i said?
Ah right, thanks. I should be right, but I'll keep looking around. The E6440 is looking like a winner in general though.
I think he meant 'you can't replace the display with a newer eDP display'.
just having LVDS isn't a problem, "it just means you can replace the display with a newer eDP" display
wait, i meant "can't replace", not "can replace"
t'was a typo
sorry for the confusion
you cannot use an eDP display in an LVDS machine
>if you have no desire to replace the display, then there's no problem
>wanting to be stuck with 1366x768 TN dog shit
hey man, a lot of people don't use laptops as their main machine, much less the in-built display
a 768p TN can be used for a lot of things
The panel is apparently called: "LP140WF SP D1" by LG, it's a "eDP 2 lane 30 pin".
You CAN use this to replace that panel, UNLESS the bios will not allow you to, so be warned.
desu if you are going to get a business clas dell go for one of the rugged ecitions they are fucking dank desu
>You CAN use this to replace that panel
Are you saying an eDP panel WILL work with an LVDS Latitude?
>UNLESS the bios will not allow you to, so be warned
Why would/wouldn't the BIOS allow it?
Again, the screen quality isn't a priority. As long as it works and doesn't deteriorate quickly, I'll be happy with it.
This is for the E6440, the E6440 is not LVDS. The bios can recognize a specific panel model and purposefully reject it.
>This is for the E6440, the E6440 is not LVDS.
To be clear, an E6440 is the one I'm looking at getting. said that the earlier E6440 models use LVDS, and the later models use eDP.
Are the LVDS ones especially bad, or just outdated? Is it something worth worrying about?
LVDS models are less desirable, it means you're stuck with awful TN displays
Ah, okay. According to , the i5-4310M Latitude has a higher chance of being an eDP one. Is it a safe bet? The listing has the UPC, but I don't know how to translate that into a serial number or Dell service tag.
no, it's confirmed that E6440 uses eDP, unless Dell had a previous batch called "E6440", there's no way it's LVDS.
LVDS is outdated, capped at 1080p
Do you have a source for that?
This thread suggests it can go both ways:
en.community.dell.com
Ignore that user, there are 2 types of E6440 as Dell made the switch over to eDP after launch
I'm looking for resources on when the switch actually happened.
I just want to know whether or not the i5-4310 will be a safe bet or not.
It did, you could order a E6440 with a 1080p IPS panel later in the production run
I know it happened, I just want to know when.
I'll send the seller a message and ask.
Ask if this machine is eDP, I mean.
You're better off asking for the service tag so you can look up the system configuration
Cucks that can't even afford a MBA
I got a Dell latitude e6400 from my mom to fuck around with. I just need a charger, but I might get 8 gb of ram and an ssd. However, all of that is 100 dollars or more, but I think this would be better than trying to get a thinkpad with what I want for more.
The shitty chicklet keyboard in the Dell and HP laptops is what keeps me away. Lenovo is going to continue to get my business due to the utter lack of any real competition when it comes to keyboards. The modern Lenovo keyboards look the same but they have so much more travel and provide so much more feedback than other brands. I can't stand to type on anything else when I'm trying to get real work done. Hell, even shitposting is more enjoyable. The trackpoints are available on other laptops and work nearly the same. But seeing as the mouse and keyboard are my main methods of input for the laptop, both need to be really good.
ThinkPad will be so much better. People will point out that it's dual core but it's a laptop. I'm posting from an X230 right now and it's one of the best laptops I've ever owned. I dropped it down some stairs the other day and the only damage was a chipped corner, and it's not even noticeable unless you look at it up close. These things are nearly indestructible.
For the fact that you can't be certain of the motherboard pinout, I would not buy this model at all.
>giving a fuck about trashpad
