Can't comment on other headsets as I don't own them.
Desktop (as in vive and rift and osvr) is pretty great and you'll be taken aback by how immersive a few screens strapped to your face can be.
I use mine mostly for gaymin and this app called Bigscreen which allows you to see your monitors in VR whilst being in a virtual environment like bedroom and kitchen.
TL;DR recommended if you have plenty of money to spend on a gimmick

I have a gearvr, picked it up for 114. Works good, not great. Worth the money if u want a cheap VR solution.

Is the cardboard good enough for basic VR and porn? My phone supports Google Daydream, but I don't feel like dumping a hundred bucks on a meme.

I dunno about basic VR. Tried it once with porn and it was awful.

But it costs like a dollar, I'd say it's worth it if you want to try it a couple times. Gear VR and headsets like that are shitty memes, too expensive for a shitty experience.
