Why is 4K content still so relatively rare, despite being so heavily shilled for?

i would rather have 60fps 1080p than 4k

expensive

For monitors, 1440p 144hz is superior every time

The better question is: "Why is 4K equipment so heavily shilled for, despite there being relatively little 4K content"

The answer to this is pretty obvious.

Too much data required for 4k, the internet in the US sucks.

This is a meme that exists because hardware isn't good enough for 4k at 144hz. Give it a little time and 1440 will look like a huge waste of money

We are 5 years out from 4k 144hz at a minimum.

There's also the issue of scaling in Windows. 200% scaling means you only get the same screen real estate as a 1080p monitor at 100% which is garbage at 27"+.

27" 4k only needs 125% scaling, 150% if you're really blind

It's an inbetween standard .4320p and 6480p will be the new big standards for media. This isn't anything new. Most anyone that actually knows display tech has stated this already. Not nu/g/ obviously. What was a surprise is how long 1080p held on for and the lull of GPU performance increases after 07.

Lack of a broadcast standard for it. ATSC 3.0 will likely be the first, with a limp-dick mandate that does not have a planned switchover date. Next-gen ISDB will skip 4K and jump directly into 8K (Super Hi-Vision). I don't think Europe (DVB) even has something to go beyond 1080p.
Film has the problem where rescanning the film for 4K is expensive, and where such a scan already exists, it might not be suitable, or lacks certain refinements for 4K, which would need $$$, which was easier to get from Blu-ray sales a decade ago. Netflix sure as hell isn't paying for it, and they're the major distributor of 4K content. And that's before we consider CGI-fests, where you'd have to re-render the effects at a higher resolution, or remaster the 2.5K originals.

>I only use streamed media
You're the reason the internet is awful.

4k is a meme

No one but consumerist retards buy into it

The technology is already becoming obsolete with virtually no support

Yeah that 25mbps Comcast offers for $79.99mo is not the reason.

only a resolutionlet or a gaymer would say this.

blame the drm niggers

A 40" inch 4K TV has the same DPI as a 1080p 20-inch monitor. Assuming it can support 4:4:4 subpixel rendering, It's the first time a consumer -grade television can be used as proper PC monitor since the MSX.

So you play 1080p pc games on a 40" 4k tv?

Maybe not, I buy a smart TV 4k for make diagrams... It was cool the first 2 weeks... After that I started to see a horizontal line. The TV has image retention... So... Finally I use a 24 inch monitor for make my diagrams, and when I need to share them in a meeting I use the 4k TV.
Any way it look cool!
For play games sucks... Because you need a very good pc.
Sorry my english... I don't talk to someone in 10 year... I'm chilean.

4k is also 60fps

I think it depends on th brand and the warranty. I'm Brazilian, and there are very few TVs that fit the necessary criteria for a PC monitor while being at a reasonable price. I think the Samsung MU6100 is the best one for that purpose, since it has a VA panel with no image retention and is somewhat affordable.
Then again, perhaps what you have are either burned pixels, or a badly seated connection somewhere in the TV. I'd take it under warranty if I were you.

network infrastructure would not be able to handle it being as prevalent as 1080p but im sure they're working on getting the right pipes in place to be able to handle it in the near future.

Most 4K isn't even 4K but upscaled 2K.
