GNU/Linux: Secure and Bloat-free Programs

Trying to make a list of essential and most used programs that aren’t bloat or project abandoned.

So far:

>>DE/Window Manager: XFCE / i3
>>Video Player: MPV
>>Image Viewer: FEH
>>Web Browsers: IceCat

Still missing a lot! Also what’s the best “Print to PDF” ?

What distro are you on?

Bootable SD/USB: Etcher

The thing is so fucking minimal and works so fucking good.

>fucking electron
just use dd

Mupdf is a nice little document viewer for all sorts of formats like epub, PDF, etc.

With a good config you can use mpv as music player and image viewer too.

Basically all suckless projects. But they're only fun when you know a bit C.

bait
>Made with JS, HTML, node.js and Electron.
literally 100% bloat and 0 benefits over using dd on cli which is simple

icecat can be used as a PDF viewer and file manager as well. Type file:/// to get to your root fs. file:///home/[user] is your ~ directory. I would also recommend spacefm for a graphical file manager and easy mounting of external drives.

MATE makes for a pretty slim desktop. Same RAM usage and responsiveness as XFCE, and its core applications are arguably better than XFCE.

But, it isn't modular.

>Image Viewer: FEH
Allow me to present using mpv as an image viewer

MPV is become the systemd of multimedia.

Well it's a video player so it's capable of playing audio and displaying pictures.

Guess that's a compliment
>I would also recommend spacefm
>2 years since last commit
dead as fuck.

>file manager
It can be used as a file browser, not as a file manager.

>Video Player: MPV
Literally bloat, just build ffplay when compiling ffmpeg and you can use it as a video player

For PDF I just use okular desu. Just works and plays nicely with my vim LaTeX setup.

firefox eats >8GB ram and 100% cpu after 30 minutes of use, no idea why
not autistic enough to use meme browsers

dwm isn't abandoned or bloat one bit

go here for fucks sake

icecat = bloat
xfces = bloat
i3 = bloat

install rio
install dwm
install suckless surf
i think ghostcript is decent

But there aren’t cute 2d girls there :/

>install rio
whats that?

Also surf is kinda dead man. dwm isn't tho and is very stablr

gentoo is bloat

rio the the default window manager for plan 9. It's ported as an X11 WM with plan9port (p9p), but personally i don't see a benefit of that because the main point of riot is that of plan 9's namespaces.

its just a wrapper for webkit it cant really die
rio is more dead but still good for main usage
it's in plan9port (which also have the superior unix utils&shell)

So what would be the problem with it? Or the “Bloat”? I suppose the benefit is that even your grandpa could use it with that GUI.

>spacefm
I second this.

That clip want even in the show? Was that an op or something.

It's from the OVAs not the aired TV series.

>secure
the entire centos and redhat repos. Don't know if they are "secure" but they are the most secure linux packages available.
>bloat-free
wm:
wmaker (features tiling shortcuts out of the box)
lxde
icewm
twm
cde (I have the debian binaries if anyone is interested)

>web browser
