There's only so much time that microsoft can keep stacking up compatibility shims for. One day it'll all go to shit, and they'll either cut it all out or kill windows.
For YEARS they tried rebuilding NT from the ground up and failed. Industry secret: Metro was their backup plan, and right now it's in full swing.
Move anyone and everyone over to universal windows platform, and once it's all anyone uses, release a windows from scratch that ONLY supports UWP.

They probably stopped supporting a certain instruction that was considered deprecated in the newer drives / hardware.

Once I broke some shader code because the newer version of the hardware we were working on didn't support certain OpenGL ES instructions and I had to hack through it by using the "crop" one instead of the one that deleted the pixel itself. Pretty wasteful but at least it didn't crash.
