Yeah I hate that shit so much, even worse is this fucking piece of garbage though

What prompt? You mean the folder tree?

Yeah fuck that

Older version of common dialog controls

Compatibility w/ older software.

in windows 2000, when they added the "copy to" and "move to" buttons to explorer, this showed up. wtf were they thinking?
fortunately this was customizable and you could put back your normal copy and paste buttons. poor design decision.

Just be glad we don't have to put up with this shit anymore, what were they even thinking?

It is for the applications to choose.

>flash
>older software

I liked that one. It was nice.

flash is obsolete

>thinking
You're giving them too much credit.

>the prompt
the fuck are you talking about

it's still getting updates. that makes it not old.

Are you retarded?

>using malware as os

If you paste the filepath in the filename field it'll save the file in that directory. If you enter no filename and hit save it should jump to the directory.

Like

D:\notporn\hotmommy.swf

and

D:\notporn\

if he responds, he'll probably say how that isn't a prompt and how it's only to be called some specific way like 'browser file picker dialog'. that or he may well be retarded. most likely the latter.

Can you answer the question without getting all emotional, Nancy?

>if he responds, he'll probably say how that isn't a prompt
Because it literally isn't. We call things by their names because that's what they are, you don't get to be snarky just because you're an idiot and use the wrong terms.

what the fuck is a prompt

An event PROMPTING the user to do something, like SAVING A FILE.

ok how are either of those images left or right. please speak slowly

they both prompt you to select a location

No seriously, why do they do this? I thought file picking was abstracted away by the OS, and the program would just call up a file picking dialog and then get back a return status and, on success, a file (by handle or name or whatever). The fact that all these file pickers are actually implemented by windows and not some in-house design seems to support my theory. So why does windows still show the utterly retarded ones by choice?

I could imagine something like an option to let programs call up a specific form of the dialog, in case the writer of the software decides it's better for his design for some reason, but then at least make it overridable by the user

the codebase is legacy and adobe is going to stop making flash by the end of 2020. the software is on life support receiving incremental updates for security/stability, not enhancements. most major browsers have discontinued support for running it directly, at least without a clickthrough, and will utterly discontinue support long before then.

You mean Adobe Animateā„¢, which will allow SWF export for decades to come. Flash haters can get fucked.

except people are going to find it hard to play after adobe stops distributing and updating the Flash player in 2020

theblog.adobe.com/adobe-flash-update/
>Adobe is planning to end-of-life Flash. Specifically, we will stop updating and distributing the Flash Player at the end of 2020 and encourage content creators to migrate any existing Flash content to these new open formats.

Is every other part of an OS a prompt too, since pretty much every component and dialog PROMPTS you to do something.
Is the Windows start menu a prompt too? It prompts you to pick a program/app.
I'm seriously asking

>he needs to bloat his browser with shit software that he uses like once a month
>not just using a flash projector that will work as long as you wish it to work

Basically anything waiting for input

>I thought file picking was abstracted away by the OS
It is but pajeets were too late to introduce it in windows so all the beginner guides still don't mention it. The only framework that can deal with all native filepickers is Qt5.

This is because Windows lets the progam modify the dialog by adding its own controls. See the warning message at the bottom of the dialog on the left in ? That was added by the program, but if you let programs add arbitrary controls, you can't automatically update old programs to use new versions of the dialogs because you could screw up the layout of the custom controls.

The dialog on the right also has a custom control (the "encoding" combo box,) but it was added with the new API. Only certain programs that don't use any complicated features of the dialog box can be "automatically upgraded" from the old version to the new version.

Ohh, ok. That actually makes sense.
What about then? I have literally never seen anything custom in those

I'm not sure what makes Windows use the old folder picker. Windows will automatically upgrade programs that use the old file picker (GetOpenFileName()) but it might not upgrade programs that use the old folder picker (SHBrowseForFolder()). Maybe they decided that the new folder picker was too different and it could mess up someone's workflow. Microsoft are pretty conservative with changes like that.

>folders and files need different pickers
>folders and files are different
This is why I'm moving away from windows

Why do I have to choose between fighting my software all the time, and fighting my OS all the time? This is a bad timeline, I want out.

Actually it is for the developers to choose, and some developers are just garbage humans.

Because developers are fucking retarded people that have autism.

To add: not all devs obviously, but the ones who do it obv.
